Ok so I was looking for fishing gear for my grandson in this very large charity shop this morning, (my wife doesn't believe me, but however) and upstairs there was a golfing area with over 100 old clubs, persimmon, laminates, blades, m'backs, just about every brand you could think of, EXCEPT MacGregor, and Hogan. There were Slazenger Nicklaus woods (not the #3 I was interested in) full sets of Spalding blades and two very tidy persimmon woods that only had the ID "Made in Scotland" with a Scotch thistle logo on the plate. I was tempted to buy them along with a permit to build a small warehouse attached to my garage. There was a nice smallish golf bag with a tartan flap and square top and a couple of others in good nick. Another thing I noticed was there were no lob wedges - doesn't anyone throw these out ? but there were 7 irons for Africa, more so than any other numbered iron - this is where the black hole comes out and if you're looking for yours, It'll prob be here. The angst continues.

That is where different areas of the world have different stuff. Since coming on here I have gotten real educated on equipment from overseas apart from JDM. Did not even know Slazenger made anything besides golf balls before discovering this site. On the lob wedge thing by what you are describing most of the equipment you saw was made long before the lob wedge was though of for sale to the public. I can remember growing up the most lofted wedge we had was a 55* maybe 56* sand wedge. Now I have seen some bent up and custom ground ones in some bags in those days. I also would be led to believe in Europe and your neck of the woods in those times a Lob wedge would have been as useless as screen doors on a submarine because a ground game was primarily played there around the greens. LOL If I had been in the store you described I would not have known half of what I was looking at unless in the cobwebs of my mind I remembered someone on here had a like club and had posted.

haha sounds about right. I've spotted lob wedges in other shops but as you say they are of the later than earlier era. in the 70's the highest lofted iron I had was a sand wedge of around 54* and this did all the close in work. I do like a 60* club for getting out of and over bunkers in general if they are close to the pin. A gap wedge and lob wedge can be a good combo.

I must be getting better at imparting spin on the ball with a wedge because I haven't found a need for a wedge with more loft than my 53° RAM Watson in well over a month. Oh sure there will be a shot or two a round where I need to open the face up -- a little or a lot depending upon circumstance -- to get a ball up in a hurry and clear an obstacle, but in terms of controlling roll-out, the 53° is pretty much drop and stop for me unless I deliberately toe it down in order to get run.

You are like me in that respect you have been playing long enough to know how to "work" a wedge. For me the 56 is the workhorse but I do carry a 60 for certain shots. My 60 also has a different sole and bounce than the 56

Thanks for the compliment STU! I maybe able use a wedge effectively enough to not need a whole selection of lofts to make the shots I might attempt, but that's probably about where the similarity in our games end. You're at an entirely different level than me. :blush:
