About the same.

The TA's are deadly accurate, for me. But there are some days where I feel much more confident hitting the slightly larger heads of the 850's. Also, I have to remember to hit an extra club when I play the TA's as the lofts are higher, compared to modern lofts.

I pay in a little informal VA league in the summer. This year I was paired with a retired teaching pro and his son who looked about 20ish. Anyway the son was playing 845s which at first surprised me since I don't see them much anymore. He was a scratch golfer or better and hit those 845s like a pro. I had a set and probably should have played them longer than I did. They were great irons and at one time it seemed about half the golfers on the course had them in their bag.

I have a set myself, and this is only anecdotal, but it seems to me that of the two iconic irons of the past 30 years or so, Eye 2s and 845s, it's the latter that I see most often in bags even today. You would think it's would be the Eye 2 but in my experience it's the Armours. I think it's because the 845s are a bit more traditional to the eye, as opposed to the severe off set of the Pings. I played in a best ball tournament a couple of weeks ago and two guys in my group had 845s. Really solid sticks.

Bought the 845 Ti insert new and played them up until a couple seasons ago. Those things were damn near bullet proof! They could literally pass as a 9/10 in condition even now, and I played a lot of rounds with them. Plus, they lived in the trunk of whatever I happened to be driving for 8 months out of every year. I've had 3 sets of forged irons since then (the ho is apparently strong in me) and have been dismayed to learn that bag chatter is an actual thing!

Had a 7 iron shootout between 4 sets and the 845's actually felt better, although maybe after playing them for so long, that's how I think clubs should feel?

I will agree with you on the part about at the time half of the golfers on the planet had those or Ping eye 2s in the bag. I was of the odd minority even back then. I was playing a set of old Power Bilt 66 model Horseshoe blades with a Karsten 1 1 iron and 4 iron. I wore those old Horseshoe irons out and switched to Macgregor in 90. For some reason and not saying they are not great clubs but those and the Pings never fit my eye or feel especially the short irons. I did like the Ping long irons. I did briefly carry a 845 SW I think it was a W-4 for a while because I had worn my beloved R-90 slick as a baby's butt. Then I discovered Cleveland wedges and it was on. But yeah I will agree they were one of the classic sets of all times along with the Eye2s and nothing at all wrong with them

If I had gotten the 845's I wanted in the first place, I bet I'd still be playing them.

I'm surprised you haven't run across a set of these in a thrift store. I've purchased, cleaned, restored and resold six sets of 845s, all found in thrifts.

The best deal I got was a 1-PW, W3, SW and W4 for 29 cents each!

Wow! 29 cents each!

In the last few years, the thrifts in my area have dried up on golf clubs, and ridiculous prices on the junk they have. Anyhow, I just got a set of lefty 845s on Tuesday, for $50 with shipping. I regripped them, and will play them first opportunity. Weather here has been cold, windy and rainy, currently raining as I write.

Will play at first opportunity.

Cheers!

I recently donated a partial set of 845s with graphite shafts and ti inserts to a youth golf organization. I got them at Goodwill for $28, missing a 6 iron I think.

I went to the local golf store at the height of the 845s popularity, about 1992, with the intent of getting a set. They were out. I waited around for the UPS man and when he did not deliver a re-supply, I bought the set of Titleist DCI's which are still in my "modern" bag.

Saw the post about the Ping Eye 2s, and wondered whether anyone was still playing the 845s. I don't actually play those clubs; I just like the Tour Step shafts, so I'm putting them in my set of (forged) KZG Evolutions. Someone at Golf Galaxy looked at what I wanted to do, and wanted to sell me some 'new technology.' I just smiled and said that the technology I wanted was in the forging! But those Tour Steps from a set of Silver Scots really gets 'em out there high and far for me!

Silver Scots were my first set of sticks! Hand me downs from my Dad, loved them! That is until I got some new AP1s and realized how much easier they were to hit

Yesterday, the weather cleared up in the afternoon, clouded up in the early evening, and rained all night, currently raining. Anyhow, around 2:00 pm, I drove out to the course, closed, a bit soggy, but as a member, I just parked by the road and walked in.

Played a GBB, 5,8,PW,SW Tommy's and a Bulls Eye. The irons play very much like my Pal Joey's I had. The regrip made them feel new. I will enjoy playing these vintage irons. Maxed out with the GBB at about 205 yards, also made one birdie.

The SW, I was getting about 75 yards.

Played 855s for a few years as...they had less offset that the 845s...And thought the bounce was less...can't recall if that is true. Probably not given the era.

...would expect them to have decent grooves still as they were bullet proof.

TA 845s were my first 'real' set of irons after playing a box set of Northwesterns for 5 years. They helped me get rid of my beginner's slice and I loved them. But, after another 5 yrs, I developed a nasty hook with everything from 7i up. In retrospect I think the offset magnified it. Then I went to my first set of blades, RAM FX Tour Grinds, and the hook magically disappeared, and I discovered the feel of MBs and never went back.

Apologies if this story has been told already as I don't have time at the moment to read the whole thread....

After Tommy Armour had retired but while he was still playing fairly regularly at Winged Foot he would get Claude Harmon's pro shop to order in 52 sets of Silver Scots (or the model at the time) at the start of the year with half in stiff and half in regular. He would invariably have people ask him during a round what clubs he thinks they should be in. He would tell them he'll put through a call to the factory and get some made especially with his recommendations. After the round he'd put his head through the pro shop door, "wait a couple of weeks and pop a set of regulars in Fred's bag".

I love the 845s, I have probably bought 7 or 8 sets of them over the past 20 years. I currently have a set of the polished 845s in my bag.

One of the most iconic game improvement irons ever designed along with the Ping Eye 2 but they have the look of a classic iron. My only knock about the 845s was I wished they made a Reduced Offset model..

The 6 - 3 irons had a ridiculous amount of offset. At first this helped me compensate for my slice, but after 4 yrs of hooking the sh!t out of the mid - long irons I went to my first set of blades, RAM FX Tour Grind, and started hitting straight long irons and that was a major epiphany in my game. Still a great set though.

I'd always been intrigued by the 845s, but with my lie angles, I've never gotten a set. Anyone have them adjusted? Wondering how well that 17-4 could go 2° or 3° up....

NRJyzr-

The 845s came in 3 versions- 2 Upright, Standard, and 2 Flat. Hosels indicated the Lie angle.

Yes, I'd spent some time looking for the upright sets, they don't seem to be too numerous. And not everyone selling a set on fleabay knows what they have (or mentions it, if they know), so you have to try combing the pics for that telltale white stripe. ;)

look at these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tommy-Armour-845s-Silver-Scot-3-SW-Missing-4-iron-/152677844611?hash=item238c4f0683:g:hlQAAOSweQBZoIQE

I thought they did make a reduced offset version. I know they did in the 855's
