How 'bout the Tommy Armour Silver Scot 845s?

Recommended Posts

I picked up a cheap set in good condition that I played for a few rounds. Really nice clubs, well balanced swing and felt great when struck well. However, I found they just don't stop on the green like the clubs I'm used to playing and you have to plan for a bunch of rollout, plus they're short. I think if you were going to play them you'd have to stick with them and not go back and forth with modern clubs.

can't compare them to current issue clubs what with the loft differences and such.

shame you don't like them.

did they come with the TA Tour Step shafts?

They have Tour Step stiff shafts and I actually like them a lot, I just didn't feel like I was playing as well with them. "Well" is relative, I might add. I found I kept having balls run off the back of the green or roll 30 ft after landing vs. stopping pretty quickly with MP5's or AP2's. Also, and this is a little weird, I felt like when I got paired up with someone and was playing them it was expected I'd shoot in the 70's, which I don't.

One day I took several older 5 irons plus an MP5 out to one of the holes on my course and fired a bunch at the flag. The MP5 was just superior in every way. Trajectory, feel, stopped dead on arrival etc. I think that's the last time I took the 845's out.

for you and your game, they are not a good match. no harm - no foul.

the best part is, not much invested. easily resold or donated.

glad you commented on the comparison to your current sticks.

this forum welcomes that kind of feedback.

Does anyone know the difference between the non ferrule and the ferrule versions of the 845s.

Currently i have two sets of black ferrule 845s

and a non ferrule 855s set.  Really want a set of the non ferrule 845s as they look so much better.

cheers.

The ones with the ferrules are one of the later versions of the 845s and have parallel tip shafts.

The older versions (of which there are two, "Pat Pend" and later "Patented" in the cavity.  The only difference between the two sets that I know of is that the W4 in the Patented set has less bounce than the one in the Pat Pend set) have .355 taper tip shafts.

I always found that one played as well as the other.

The 845s, like the Ping Eye 2, is one of those sets that can best be described as evergreen or timeless.

Thanks for this info.  Mine are the ones without ferrules and say "Patented" and have Tour Step steel shafts.  Do you happen to know the specs on this shaft?

I thought the Tour Steps were made for TA by True Temper and were similar to the TT Dynamic series.

they are classic designs, likely a bit shorter than some of the newer and larger iron heads now produced.

I've had many players walk past my bag and comment - "Tommy Armour's - I remember playing those" and give me a nod.

swing your swing, play your game.

Here's a paragraph from the 1993 Armour catalog that I hope answers your question:

"Tour Step is a light weight steel shaft custom designed by True Temper for the 845s clubs. Its dynamic characteristics are very similar to Dynamic Gold except for the flex point is slightly lower.  As a result, Tour Step shafts may produce slightly higher shot trajectories than Dynamic Gold."

Armour offered both Dynamic Gold and Tour Step at this time.  I thought the Tour Step was pretty close to the TT Lite of that time.  Hope that helps!

Thanks much, I was hoping it was a lighter shaft than the DG.

I can't say I've hit any other irons since I received a used set of Tommys for my birthday back in the early 90's. I foolishly sold them when I was going through some back related problems & couldn't see much golfing in my future.

Since then, I've picked up the sticks again a few years ago & have bought a few sets starting with a set of Royal Scots I found in a thrift store. After that, I snagged a nice set of 845s on Facebook marketplace & added the missing SW - W4. Also, another nice set off eBay & another set of 855s from marketplace.

My latest acquisition is a real good looking set of Golden Scot 845 BC (beryllium copper) 1-SW with Aldila HM-35 shafts. I can't wait to re-grip & play those.

I guess you could say I've got a problem with hoarding Tommys, but for me there's nothing that compares to hitting these things pure...it's almost as if I've just experienced some sort of "dark magic" every time it happens. (which is becoming more frequent the more I play...go figure)

I've gone from not being able to hit a driver AT ALL, to now hitting all my sticks well enough to where I don't lose very many balls.

I give much credit to Clay Ballard (Top Speed Golf - youTube) for getting the big wood back in my bag.

Big fan of these irons and really like the Tour Step shafts. I read the post from the guy who doesn't like them for chipping or holding the green on approach shots, I've had no real problems in that area.  If anyone is on the fence about trying these irons the price shouldn't hold you back.  Easy to find a full set for $100 or less.

I bought a set of 3 to 9 in stiff tour step shafts for $70. I don't use the i3 as I have a modern utility with similar loft. After regripping the clubs - I have to say that they are wonderful. They are not that much shorter than my modern irons despite the traditional lofts.

I like the offset in the longer irons that helps me produce a slight draw. Combined the set with separate wedges of 48, 52 and 58. Not feeling sad despite not having the set PW as the specialist wedge is no doubt spinning a bit more.

Really wish some manufacturer would still make a set of "compact" player's cavity backs with a bit of offset in the longer irons... Meanwhile, I think I'll be playing the 845s. They're unbeatable for the price!

For the record, they are the "patented" without ferrule. Not sure if the lenghts are original, as the i9 seems .25" longer when compared to the rest? Not a problem though as its now 35.5", same as my wedges.

I hope I would've bought these earlier!

FWIW, the factory specs show the 9i to be 35 and a half.

5I at 37 and a half.

Having your wedges match is a fine short game method.

Just sold a set of 845 and UPS lost em.  Perfect.

Found a set of clones (Tour Series Limited Ed) 2-P at Goodwill for $12.  If they feel anything like the Silver Scots I will be extremely happy with my find

I built quite a few of those SS knockoffs back in the day. Not a bad replica but I would recommend getting the lofts and lies checked.

Sadly, companies are no longer producing the "Ping Eye 2-TA 845" concept (which I define as small head combined with deep cavity back).

I just picked up a set from 4 iron to PW. Man I forgot how good are these!

I like how small the head are but still forgiving. Compared to my Cobra Forged Tec 2020 irons, these are just 10 yards shorter but same dispersion and forgiveness. The feel of course cannot be matched as a forged face iron but they are as good as the current irons imo.

$70 Canadian, cheaper than my golf shoes lol

My friend who is a really good iron player came up from Fl to visit but couldn't bring his sticks, I loaned one set of my 845's[I have 2] and he was killing them. He had just received his new fitted Taylormade irons and said due to loft he was 2 clubs[approx] different but was just as accurate with the 845's. He was a little concerned about the size of the club head since it looks smaller than his new irons, but after the first hit he said it wasn't an issue.

Not wanting to bump an old thread but I play Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scots but only in my 7 club minimalist bag. I'm 43 years old, got given these by a family member who bought them new in 1989. I was 10 years old then. Hard to believe these clubs are that old given their condition and performance.

They are the none ferrule pat pend version. They have new grips on and play great. A few degrees weaker than my gaming clubs which are Ben Hogan Apex Plus but still great.

I play with a friend who hits it pretty much the same distance as me. His 7 iron is 32*..…..my TA845 6 iron is 32*......he still pretends he hits his 7 iron just as far as my 6.

The 845 are very classic looking. Mine are in fantastic shape, 2-SW and in the bag they don't look dated at all to me and I have no problem working the ball at all.

I'm only really using the 6, 8, PW and SW in the Sunday bag. All the lower irons have a lot of offset. I'm not a massive fan of offset, I always feel I'm likely to hook or shank it but so far have found the 6 iron highly playable.....the amount of offset on the 2 iron is ridiculous compared to what I'm used to though.

However, they aren't a patch on my Hogan forged irons when it comes to the softness off the face but I would highly recommend these to a new golfer if they find them cheap.

This minimalist bag thing I'm into is making me want some Ping Eye 2 even though I find those and most older Ping clubs truly ugly to look at.

It's an acquired taste, I suppose, especially if you're a fan of blades.  Myself, I'm not really excited by blades even though I have a set.  I may have played them a handful of times and there's nothing really wrong with the playability, they just don't float my boat.

I'm much more interested in classic cavity back irons, be it my Eye 2 clones or my current set of Hogan Apex Edge Pros.  I had a set of Adams Idea Pro Golds that I was enamoured with, but found Project X 6.0's a bridge too far.  Stick some Steelfiber 80 CWs in and I might have had something.  Always had a bit of a thing for a set of Founders Club TV-1s as a collectors item too.  Taylormade 300's weren't bad either.

I guess you could say I'm more of an 80's, 90's, 00's guy than the classic blades and persimmon era which corresponds with when I first got interested in the game.  They always said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent
