Going Retro - Macgregor Jack Nicklaus Muirfield irons

pattg

Recommended Posts

After growing up with forged blades - Wilson Staff, Mizuno TP Originals - then graduating to Ping Eye 2s, X14s, pro series - I have now bought a set of Muirfields 2-SW.

This was the set I drooled over as a kid but could never afford. In my view it is one of the finest looking sets of irons ever made with the Jack Nicklaus signature across the muscle back and the gold paint fill on the faces.

Not only do the clubs bear (excuse the pun) the signature of the best player ever but they also have the name of my local championship course on them where I have great memories of going to see Opens as a kid. Not only that but I'll never forget seeing the Muirfield PW in Greg Norman's bag in 1986 at the Dunhill Cup, amongst all his Tour Edition blades.

Anyway, point is I had a few shots with them before sending them off for a refurb and they felt amazing. Really solid strike off a tiny blade which highlighted that they were a suitable gamer. Can't wait for their return.

Anyone else on here game an old, sentimental set of pre 90s blades? If so post up some pictures please, I'd love to see them and will do the same when I can. Thanks.

Yes. Old blades, persimmons, all kinds of old(er) stuff. We hang out here to chatter about it:

I also have a set of Muifields, I take them out from time to time.

I'm more of a Ram Tour Grind guy, though. My first blade set were Golden Ram Frequency Matched, and I've kind of stuck with them over the years. Ironically, the slightly wider sole of the Muirfields probably suits me better. LOL

Also picked up a set of Ram FX Nickel Tour Grinds recently.

Don't have many pics, but I'll try throw a couple in here...

In my first few years into this sport, my former boss (who was a former club pro) gamed a set of 20th anniversary Muirfields and I'll never forget the penetrating trajectory and sound off of those heads when he struck them. Years later, my swing is a lot better yet I still can't replicate that ballflight.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

  • 2 weeks later...

I've got two sets of Muirfield irons and one full set of woods. I have 1-3-4-5 wood and 1-PW that I bought brand new in 80 or 81 (can't remember)...........played them fro a long time but they are still in very nice shape. I have another set of 2-PW I bought for virtually nothing about 25 years ago. They were damn good irons.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been playing old blades for years about all I own are old Macgregor blades. Just last week I was given a pristine set of VIPs by a fellow Wrxer

First set is my set of VIPs I bought new in the box in 90 and have played mostly ever since. The set that was given to me last week are just like those but pristine like I joked to RP (Forged Forever) The ones I got last week looked like these did in 90

Second Pic is my Muirfields now mine are not 20th ann like yours but these have been rechromed and are in pristine shape I have only hit them 3 rounds or so

3rd pic is my 1959 Mac FC 4000s I got those in a trade deal with the Muirfields. They have been rechromed but unfortuantly lost the black ceramic face in the process. I know they are in a 70s Power Bilt bag but what the heck?

For some reason I double posted pics but I have had some equipment issues with this computer and phone lately

Well, they're here and they look amazing 2 - SW + LW. I think they Look as good as any club on sale today. The 60 degree Personal wedge ain't too shabby either. Can't wait to play them.

That 60* is as rare as Hen's teeth. Actually this is only the second one I have seen and both of them were posted here on WRX. I have the 56* version of that wedge. I actually play it some with my 62 model FC -4000s which I forgot to post a while ago

That's good to hear, thanks. I was surprised there were 60 degree wedges back in the 80s. It is in the best condition of all the clubs which, again is unusual for a wedge.

Great looking stuff guys.

I have a set of Muirfield irons (86 ish)

and matching Driver fairways still in the box.

Never been hit.

A set of 71 Wilson staff irons and matching woods

In a case never been hit.

A set of Titleist 841 LMT irons still in the box.

Never been hit.

And a set of Ping Eye 2 plus still in box never been hit.

Sorry I have no pics.

I have had a set of each that I used to play.

The temptation to take any one of these out too hit

is unbearable.

I must restrain myself.

Great set of irons. Yours don't seem to have the words "Tour Forged" on the backs of the hosels, and neither do mine. I have never heard a definitive reason that some are so worded and some are not.

Mine do have the Tour Forged script on the hosels. I don't know why some do and some don't though. Probably only down to model year.

It is a difference in model years

This is a great thread for me that some of you classic players are coming out of the wood work on the mainstream side of WRX. We have quite a few of us that play this stuff over on the Classics side of WRX. I let those guys know over on the Classic side know of this thread

I bought a set of Mac MT Tour Forged (1980-83 model) and mine didn't have Tour Forged on the hosel, yet others do. Puzzled the heck out of me, but I don't mind it, as apart from the club number and MT on the sole, the only other marking is "MacGregor" on the back. Really nice and simple design.
