Need some AD DI-5 advice

Looking at getting an AD DI-5 R1 driver shaft and unable to test one out locally.

I currently am hitting a Ping TFC-419 Reg shaft in a Titleist 915 D3 9.5° at 44.5" and on an average day, I carry it about 265 up here in the Prairies (at sea level 250ish). I like the Ping shaft for the weight and feel (smooth and the tip is pretty stable), but I would like to give a AD shaft a go. The price is a little steep for a little testing that may or may not work out (about $260 US).

For those that have played the AD DI-5 I would be looking at what your experience is with that shaft and if I you have any recommendations? I would really hate to get the R1 and then realize that I should've gotten a Stiff as I have read conflicting stories of how they play to flex.

Ping G430 10K 10.5º Chrome 2.0 S (on order)

Ping G400 9º TFC 419 Stiff at 45" (soon to be mothballed)

Jazz 3 wd Powercoil Stiff
Rogue 3iron Recoil 660 F3 +1/2"
X2 Hot 4-AW Recoil 660 F3 +1/2"
Vokey SM4 56°, SM4 60°
Ping Sigma2 Valor at 34.75"

Lots of views. No one has an opinion?

How about those that have the DI-6/ Reg vs stiff.

These shafts are too expensive for a blind buy. Perhaps you could rent one from shaftshack to try.

If you are looking for a cheaper experiment the XCaliber SL 50 Stiff has a similar profile to the DI 5, it is a little stronger overall but you seem to be short changing yourself on shaft flex unless your swing is very smooth.

If you want to stick with regular the SWD 50 R once again has similarly stop the DI 5 a little stronger butt and tip.

The DI range is about to be upgraded with new Tour AD TP with similar profiles to the DI line including some mid 40 gram models.

I have both a DI 6 and 7. Both stiff flex. High launch and low to mod spin for me. Extremely smoooooth. As tou would expect from a high $$ shaft. I prefer the dI7. Play in. Titleist 913 9.5 tour issue D2 head at 44.5 inches. DI 6 is in A 915D3 at 45 inches. I was fit into this shaft and donnot recommend blindly buying one unless you have the cash flow. Very expensive investment to not like or be a poor fit for you.

If you like the Ping shaft I kind of doubt you will like the Tour AD DI unless you are looking for a stiffer feeling tip and well stiffer feeling shaft really.

What is making you want to change anyway, sounds like you are hitting the Ping shaft well enough.

While I hit the TFC pretty good, I feel I am leaving some distance out there by not getting more roll out (hopefully a high but flatter trajectory). Really like a 50ish gram shaft but several I have tried, do not feel stable at impact. My swing speed is up there (100-10?) but not a rushed swing so I can get by with a Reg flex. Looking to find that magic in a light shaft that isn't too firm but yet stable in the tip. A bit of a unicorn, but the more I read about the AD DI, the more I want to try it. Really trying to decide whether I go with a R or an S at this point.

Any experience with the original Blue Board? Very close IMO, at least in a S vs S comparison of the two in terms of flex/feel.

If looking to change ball flight, much easier other ways though IMO.

Haven't hit one for ages. I do have one sitting in the basement though. Might throw one in an adaptor and give it a twirl. I started out my 915 with a Rouge 60 S and after hitting the TFC, it's like a brick. Spoiled from hitting an easy shaft. :to_become_senile:

I'm with yah. From my personal feel, I might give a slight edge to the BB for feeling ever so slightly stiffer than the DI, but not by much, and that could just be from the particular shafts I have to compare and not from a large number of samples to play with.

In terms of softer, and GD made, what about the YS series shafts? Not sure how easy they are to come by though.

Sort of avoiding going back in time and finding a shaft that I like and it being out of production. I might wait until I go to Palm Springs in Dec. to see if I can find a place that might have a DI-5. I may get in touch with Pete Carlson's to see what they might have around (they have a lot of shite).

You can find the 5s, I just never really see them for a descent price. Seems like the only ones holding on to them are not really budging on price. I've seen pulls on Proclub's ebay site every now again, but they are rare.

OP, like you, I prefer lighter shafts in the driver, and have tried many. AD DI was way too spinny, AD MT was a much better fit, but still a little high launch and spin. I found the Aldila 44 Magnum x flex to be very stable, but it was just too light, and I lost the feel of the clubhead. I have settled on a Matrix Black Tie; keeps spin down, launches high flat bombs, very stable, and dispersion is tight. BTW, my ss is similar to yours 105-107.
