Palm Springs mid Dec

Recommended Posts

I've been to Palm Springs area a few times and looking to play somewhere new that is a good track that I might not have considered.

Here is where I've already played (no particular order):

DW - Firecliff DW - Mountain View Indian Wells - Player Shadow Ridge

La Quinta - Mountain Course SilverRock Classic Club

I've got a week (mid Dec.) so I can play 4-5 times and want to see what else is there. I know there are some really great courses, but are member only so we can toss those out.

Considering Eagle Falls, PGA West, IW Celebrity and.... I'm willing to pay good $$ for a good track so I'm not looking for a $40 round at a course that is nice because it is cheap. If it's inexpensive and really good, that's a bonus. What else is out there that are really good and worth taking a look at? Thanks in advance.

PGA West Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament are both worth playing. They'll be expensive but are both a great test of golf. They've got a nice facility out there and I enjoy the contrast of the dormant rough during the winter to the green fairways.

If you want to play a classic track that is unlike most of the other surrounding desert courses, I'd suggest Bermuda Dunes Country Club. Yes, it's members only, but if you contact their general manager he can likely set you up to play with another member at the course if it's not too busy. I really enjoy that course as a nice change of pace from the others in the area.

Stone Eagle is pretty cool and I have to say when you're out there it feels much more like Nevada or Arizona rather than Palm Springs. I don't know if that makes sense to you now, but it might when you get out there, haha. The 12th and 15th are 2 of the best par 3s in the area IMO

Thanks. I forgot to mention that my wife rides shotgun (non-player) so I don't think that would go over too well playing with a member, but i will consider telling her to go shopping.

Playing like Arizona makes perfect sense. I find the courses in Mesa/Phoenix much more dangerous in the waste areas. Too many things wanting to stick and cut you along with more legless creatures. And getting into a waste area and having no real chance of playing your ball. You can see it, you just can't get it or hit it (I've played Dove Mountain :( ).

Thanks. I went through most of them and it just made me more antsy to get going. Really excited and anxious at the same time since I have spent most of the year rebuilding my swing. My instructor says it is good to go, but 6 weeks between rounds has me a little worried that I'll thinking golf swing and not playing golf.

Looks like I'm considering Country Club, Escena, Eagle Falls, IW Celebrity and ??. Weather can be a crapshoot. I've been there when it is pretty cool and borderline hot too. While I would much rather play when it is calmer, I find it funny when there is a mild wind (compared to the Prairies) and everyone is complaining that it is too windy to play.

I've been to the Air Museum - much better than I anticipated and enjoyed that you were able to get real close (and touch some) of the craft.

Joshua was pretty cool too, but you can only handle just so many palms, rocks and cacti without a golf club in hand.

Also have been up San Jacinto and to the Living Desert Museum. Both great attractions.

Best "attraction" in the area is Stuft Pizza in La Quinta. I could eat there every day.

Hey Socrates ... pleased you enjoyed the info/pic's. Escena is next door to where we stay, it's a hidden gem with very few houses to worry about & someplace to get your first round in to start your trip. Their only short coming is they don't have a driving range you hit balls into a cage. If it's windy don't overlook Indian Canyons "South" not their "North", which is located within the housing development. I really enjoy that track, very few homes & lots of wildlife, too. We also enjoyed Stuft Pizza in Old Town as well check out Trilussa if you like Italian. http://trilussarestaurant.com/

Pete Carlson Golf & Tennis on Hwy 111 has lots of stuff at reasonable prices, enjoy your trip to the Coachella Valley. I'm also a Mb prairie boy, the Peg was home & wind normally wasn't a big deal, unless you were fishin Lake Wpg.

Cheers

I lived in PS most of my life until 2010 and will be back mid-December for a tournament. You've already played some great courses and you're going at a great time.

Search the forums for past threads. There are several with good info of other WRXr's PS pilgrimages.

Non-golf activities.... As you may have read, we've done San Jacinta, Joshua Tree, Living Desert, Air Museum and Patton Museum (and shopping - everywhere). Anything else that comes to mind that we should do? Considering going to Mt. Palomar but that seems to be a long way to look at it since you can't go in where the actual telescope is.

I go to Palm Springs every year and there are a ton of great courses. I like La Quinta Mountain Course and one of my favorites is Indian Wells Celebrity Course.

Last week I played Mountain Shadow with a buddy who suggested it. I did no research prior to playing and I should have. It wasn't horrid, but it wasn't nice. The average length of the par 4s must have been 305 yards from the tips and the majority of them were really lame 90 degree doglegs.

Also the tightest fairways I have played in some time with homes cramped in.

If you can somehow get on Stone Eagle, do it. Best course in the desert. Greens will be rolling so pure in mid-December. I played it a few weeks ago and it's immaculate and an amazing variety of holes with sweeping valley views. Can you tell I liked it?

$18,000 in advance. I think I can swing that. Right after I win the PowerBall.

Well I wasn't suggesting on becoming a member. But if you know someone that knows someone that's a member...

I knew that, but I would if I could. It's another one of those where you can't get on without connections. Actually I likely know someone but being a friend of a friend who's an acquaintance is just awkward at best. Did that in Mexico once and it was really uncomfortable. Back to that lottery plan ?
