I've just started golf this year. No HC yet so my target in 2017 is to break 100 and achieve a HC of under 30.

A little embarrassed really for such low aspiration here in GolfWRX, but one has to start somewhere.

Cheers and Happy New year everyone!

Don

We have all been there Don. Just keep swinging.

Thanks Spags! Full swings all the way.

As most everyone else is saying, get in better shape and more flexible. I think flexibility is one of the most overlooked factors of the game, so am thinking of getting into a yoga/pilates class over the winter.

I turn 50 right before the Senior County Am this year, and the other goal is to place top 10 in that. Actually that was #1 goal, but can't get there without being in shape and hitting it longer.

Find a swing that allows me to play 18 without killing my back so badly that I can only stand to play, or practice only once every couple of weeks.

What a bummer, been retired a year now, working part time as part of the maintenance crew on a course I couldn't get through the gate on overwise, and playing less golf than when I was working full time.

Talk about a Pyrrhic victory!!!

Finish renovating our old house and get it on market before April . . . which is why I only got maybe eight rounds in 2016.

Dial in distances on full wedge shots and quit flying greens.

Trust my tempo on long fairway shots and quit swinging for the fences.

My goals

- improve club lag in my swing. (In progress)

- improve confidence on the Puting green

- win more tournaments. (One win last year)

- play in one or more New England Series tournaments.

- participate in qualifying for the RI amateur

- hopefully get a round below 70.

That is about it. Maybe improve on the fitness end a little as well. Been working with a coach and seeing big improvements. Very excited for next season.

- establish a pre-shot routine for ALL shots (tee shots, approaches, pitches, chips and putts). - practice putting, especially inside 10 feet. - improve strength a flexibility through regular stretching and body-weight exercises.

I've never really had a set pre shot routine and the one I sort of started using this year I didn't stop and take the time to go through every time. I noticed my scores were significantly better in tournament rounds this year simply because I took more time to think about the shot and went through some sort of pre shot routine rather than just going up and hitting it like I do in practice or when I'm out playing with friends for fun. I'm going to establish a pre shot routine this season as well.

Instead of a New Years resolution I went another way. Yesterday I bet my buddy a round of golf that I would break 80 before June 3rd, strict rules of golf. We agreed a 77 on a PAR 70 would count. Current low is 80 on a PAR 70. I have been as low as 2 over for nine but couldn't keep it together.

It is some incentive but not much. By June you can play a nice course around here for about $15.

I've always been the type that has to set a goal. Back when I used to do 10K, Triathlon, Marathon, had to sign up for one or wouldn't train. This should make me a little more focused.

To enjoy the game and forget about being a 6 handicap again. Those days are long gone, but I can still have a few of those special kind of rounds every now and then. I have been really frustrated at times since my returning to the game (mostly vision depth perception) 5 months ago.

"Enjoy the game" is a good one.

I hear you on the vision and depth perception stuff. This past year I had my eyeglass prescription changed for the first time in 10+ years. After a week or so I didn't really notice it any more in day to day life like driving or chopping vegetables or what have you, but golf was another story. It took a few months to get a comfortable amount of feel back, from the driver all the way through the putter--with that new prescription it was like I was suddenly a few inches shorter and a few inches farther away from the ball. Weird stuff.

I have the depth perception thing going on pretty bad, along with seeing a round "gray cloud" in my right eye vision. Looking at at a tee ball through my right eye is like looking through a heavy fog. I can still play, and that is the most important thing.

Good luck with it man. My mother was legally blind (didn't stop her from driving but let's not talk about that, lol), and macular degeneration runs strongly in the other side of my family so it's definitely something I think about.

Last year, my resolution was to get my handicap index into the 3.x range. (I was at a 7 before that), I accomplished that and went as low as a 3.3 index, and stayed in the 3.x range for 4 months.

This year, I want to get it to 1.x range (drop two strokes).

In order to do that I have a few other resolutions....

#1- Get real lessons from a really good pro (I've never had a lesson before)

#2- Once the weather gets a little better, practice at least once a week

#3- Lose 20 lbs

For Xmas, my wife gave me a lesson with a really respected teaching pro who's local. Best Xmas gift of the season IMO!
