New Years Golf Resolution

Spags

Recommended Posts

Last year was the first time I've ever tried to play more and actually improve. Joined a club which gave me more access/incentive to get out.

This year I'd like to

1. Reduce Handicap Index to <20. Currently a 26.1.

2. Improve short game. Purchased Dave Pelz Short Game Bible and Putting Bible. Want to start keeping stats to see if I'm improving there or not.

3. Walk 9 after work once a week and play 18 at least twice a month. Family lake house makes it hard to get to the course on the weekends more than that plus with my first kid on the way i'll want to spend as much time with him as well.

4. Play in a club event.

Feel as though I'm athletic enough to improve but just haven't taken the time. I am completely bitten by the golf bug at this point.

I have been playing this crazy, expensive, time comsuming, monumentaly frustrating, extremely difficult game for 58 years! I have been a single digit handicap since 1980. Having said that, I can tell you that I have never seen a video of my swing where my hands were ahead of the ball at impact like they are supposed to be. I have just become accustomed to sweeping, picking, flipping; however you want to characterize this "all too common" way of hitting the ball and I hate it. I have tried most every thing and every way I know of to correct this swing fault, to no avail. I got me a Tour Striker Pro 7 iron about a year ago and I bring it to the range with me almost every time I visit and try to use it. Sometimes I can get the hang of it and strike a couple of really good ones in a row but for the most part it gives me a very difficult time. I have taken many lessons over the years, and none of the PGA pros (and I ONLY TAKE LESSONS FROM P G A PROS) has been able to fix me which is obviously a shortcoming of mine and not theirs. I'm plannig to go see another pro soon who is a former tour pro (however insignificant he was), hoping that through his extensive experience he may know a good way to help me overcome this TERRIBLE swing flaw. I think it all started when I was taught to CUP my wrists at the top; and, in order to square the clubface at impact I got in the habit of flipping instead of rotating my wrists "downward" so that my left wrist would be slightly bowed and face the target at impact. It is a 30 year old bad habit that is virtually impossible to break but my resolution for this year, as it has been for the past decades, is to finally correct this flaw and learn to strike the ball like Nick Price and virtually ALL great Professional (and amateurs for that matter) ball strikers who have the requisite shaft lean at impact. Next tool: DST.....and a lesson from that former touring pro. Gotta accomplish this goal before I croak.......Wish me luck!

  • Break 80 for the first time ever
  • Get handicap into single digits
  • Work hard on my putting and try to eliminate all the 3 putts(which should make the first two easier)
  • Get fitted for the first time
  • Play all year with the clubs I have currently(this might be the hardest one to keep)

I failed less than two weeks into the new year. Just picked up a Titleist 915 D4 driver to mess around with! I admit it I'm weak and have a problem! lol

  1. Improve fitness
  2. Practice regularly and purposefully
  3. Target and shot trajectory focus over swing mechanics/feel focus
  4. Play 10 new courses
  5. Play in a league and state event

Resolution mid season update:

1. Improved fitness: flexibility is improving, but strength, cardio and nutrition need more effort and planning

2. Practice is purposeful but erratic.

3. Target and trajectory focus is producing great shots and when the mechanical thoughts appear- the big numbers on the scorecard appear

4. Played 6/10 new courses already.

[NJ- Twisted Dunes, Ballamor; MA- Pinehills (Nicklaus), Pinehells (Jones), Shining Rock, Allendale CC; NH- Overlook,

5. No league, state qualifiers or state events (life events)
