SuperSpeed Golf training system

Recommended Posts

It says in the picture that it's the weight of a normal men's driver. If you'll go to their website, they already have videos up for the "Superspeed C" protocol. In all, it's three drills, with three sets of three swings dominant side and three swings non-dominant, followed by three swings from a normal stance. So a total of just under 60 swings three times a week; still a lot more than most TPI-type guys want you to do, but both the weight and reps are MUCH more in line with prevailing research.

it seems they took the blue shaft medium superspeed and put on a grip with 20 more grams. I think it would be cheaper to buy a counterweighted grip.

This Secret Grip weighs 92g or approximately 42g heavier than standard, it will decrease swing weight by about 10 points. I think it might be better to slide this on the Green "light" shaft.

For those who have been doing the SuperSpeed program with the relatively inexpensive swing speed radar that is recommended, I am hoping someone can help me trouble shoot an issue with the radar. In short, the radar is registering what I believe are inaccurately low readings right handed. I've been doing the program 2 or 3 times a week since the beginning of the new year, and the max I've hit right handed at maximum effort with any of the sticks is maybe 101 or 102 mph (blue and green have gotten to this level). Left handed seems more accurate, as I am creeping into the mid 90s with a pretty awkward hack.

Someone may say "well, you probably just aren't as fast as you thought you were going to be." However, I just had a clubfitting at Club Champion yesterday, and was at a comfortable 107-108 mph with my gamer, getting to 109 or so going a little harder with clubs I was testing. I certainly trust Trackman over a $100 radar, and the Club Champion numbers were virtually identical to what I am seeing on the course.

For the life of me, I don't know what is going on with the radar. It is set to the "golf" mode (not baseball), and I've set it up about 10-12 inches from where the bottom of my swing is passing. Has anyone else experienced something like this, or is my setup wrong? I know a big component of the program is actually tracking progress, and the only "progress" I've made thus far is on the left handed swings.

If u get a chance to use it on the range, setup the SSR and then starting hitting some drivers and see how that works out. Perhaps u swing faster when there is a ball in front of you. I noticed that when I hit trap draws on the range my SSR reads ridiculously slow because of the lag/angle which tricks the radar into reading slow . If I flip the hands over and blade it, the reading will be super fast.

The new stick feels CRAZY light. They put all the weight in the grip essentially to force your hands to work correctly. The total weight is supposed to be the same as the blue stick.

On the protocols. Speaking with them order is important, but they were adamant to take as much time or rest as possible to give it your best swing. If you can do that with no break by all means do your thing, but they really don’t recommend it.

They talked about doing a protocol series like Tour Striker did with the PlaneMate to clear up misconceptions.

Last, transference, he said it should take 2 months to see transference from stick gains to permanent gains training 3 times a week at minimum.

One is speed, one is pure hand and wrist sequence. You can use them together or rotate on and off days with them.

Curious, have you been training inside? I've been getting an occasional anomaly reading (like 40% lower) since I was relegated to the garage over winter but never had problems on the range.

Yes, I am training in my garage as well. It is strange because it feels like left swings are fairly accurate, but I do not think I've gotten a fully accurate right handed swing in 7-8 sessions.

I mean if you see what Robin at TopSpeed Golf is doing older guys getting well into the 100's is not a surprising result just with a weekend of functional work.

I think that in many cases, the guys (like me!) in their 60's and 70's are not good candidates for Super Speed. We tend to benefit a lot more from mobility workouts, especially for our hips; we may already be swinging as fast as we possibly can given the limitations of our bodies. Once the workouts have been done and mobility gets better, THEN the Super Speed stuff becomes more relevant. But it's not "low hanging fruit" for older guys the same way it is for younger guys.

I’ve been doing my own modified routine after a slight plateau.

still doing green 5R/5L. Then blue. I only make 2 to 3 right handed swings with the red just to see how fast I am swinging it then I do the step drill 5 reps right and left with green and blue. I then finish with two sets of just the blue sticks doing normal swings and a final right handed with the green.

I have a very tweaky back so some days I might cut it short depending on how I feel, but replacing red reps with more blue has shown some gains. I reached my highest ever speed today with the blue stick. 113 mph

I don’t do kneeling or Happy Gilmore because I’m scared I might injure myself. I’ve picked up 10mph overall so far, for me this is huge as I’ve lost a lot of speed over the years because of injury. If I can pick up just a few more and maintain it I will be very pleased.

Update on the blue stick only protocol i have been referencing.

Today i hit an all time high on the blue stick of 141, keeping in mind due to winter weather i have not touched a club in a month. My previous high was 138 on blue about 8 months ago. I was able to hit 138,139, and 141 today so it wasn’t a total fluke.

My left handed swing i hit 128 which was 5mph faster than previous high. In the past month i have done nothing but some kettlebell protocols i have been working on.

There is definitely something to power training and blue stick only.

You are getting exactly the results that research by TPI types and studies from other sports predicts. FAR fewer swings, done with something the weight of what you are going to use live. I've had a similar experience after MONTHS of the full SS protocol with minimal gains, and now SS has a new product the weight of a normal driver with a protocol of fewer swings. Hmmm...

In the past few weeks, I've been doing just the blue stick twice a week: 5 regular swings each direction, 5 kneeling swings each direction, 5 step-change swings each direction, 3-5 regular swings dominant (depends on whether I feel I can eek out more speed in reps 4 or 5).

Prior to switching to the blue stick only, my personal best was 134 with the green stick and though I didn't track it, I don't ever recall getting higher than mid-120s with the blue stick. Using just the blue stick, I hit 136 today with the step change and 130 with a regular swing. I had a few other swings within a couple mph of those, so I don't think they were erroneous readings.

That said, I've been also doing strength/functional training 3-4 days/week and HIIT 2-3 days/week (usually on days opposite my strength/functional training). The HIIT has mostly been the rowing machine, slider mountain climbers, or a medicine ball circuit (including ball slams and wall throws). I was still working out while using the three stick protocol, but the workouts didn't really have a lot of direction. I'm following a more rigid program now, so that's an important variable to consider. Since my HIIT workout is a lot shorter than my strength workout, I'll usually do SS the same day as my HIIT. Since I can do SS in my gym, I'll usually do my typical warmup, do the SS protocols, then proceed with whatever my HIIT workout is for the day.

Winter sucks here and I have a hard enough time carving out gym time to workout and do the SS protocols, so I haven't hit full golf shots in a few weeks to see if I notice any difference.
