SuperSpeed Golf training system

Recommended Posts

I would imagine the difference is time.

If I do the middle stick only with rest between sets it's only a little bit shorter than the full protocols with no rest as suggested originally (this has since changed as SS now recommends rest).

If you did the full protocols with rest we're now looking at a routine that could start approaching 30-45 minutes and possibly longer.

Took a month off to focus on rotating and releasing my speed better in transition.
If you aren't following @MonteScheinblum on Instagram you're missing out on some speed.
I started protocol 1 again this morning for a fresh run through the protocols and gained 2 mph off where I ended in January.

So, the blue stick is only 295gm right? Have any of you just lightened up an actual driver to use at this weight? Is there some shaft flex benefit in the speed stick that I wouldn't get from an xstiff shaft?

I ask because I'm currently doing the normal protocol with a driver I lightened to 274 and a heavy one of 336gm that is my actual EFSZ with a 14gm front weight and an extra 12gm slide weight and feeling like I'm getting gains.

I am sure this would work, but there is also an air displacement issue. A weight doesn't slow down to air resistance as much as a 460cc driver. I do a lot more driver work with my training though. I always start and finish with 5 actual driver swings.

Good point. I did the Blue stick last night again with 5 normal swings, 5 step, 5 happy gilmore and 5 normal to finish up. I then took ~5-6 swings with an old Driver after to get an idea of where I stood. Got 126 twice with the Driver on dry swings, which is higher than I remember. Going to stick with the program for the remainder of the winter to see what numbers I can get on Trackman early Spring. I've also been working out consistently for the last month and a half, so I'm hoping that will help too....just need to do some hip mobility work because I notice the my right hip has more mobility than my left. This allows me to open up earlier with my non-dominant side and stay through better. My left swings are only within a couple MPH of my dominant right swings, so I feel like with better sequencing/hip mobility, I can improve even more.

That's why I was asking. I made a 20g lighter and 20g heavier than my normal driver weight out of actual clubs because I wasn't paying $200 for the real thing. But if blue only is working well, that's the exact weight of the 20g light club I made and I'd just do that one. I guess was just also wondering why so many people were throwing so much $$$ instead of doing the same with real clubs.

You can buy the Hurricane Golf knockoff speed sticks for like a $100...

The first question is the key, I think. And the answer is that training with your normal driver WOULD be better than three sticks, according to all of the research from golf and other sports as well. I promise you that NO golf fitness professional or TPI-type facility is going to have you swing a heavier stick to help you get faster, much less doing the number of reps in the SSG protocols.

Here's the thing about using the lighter AND the heavier stick: It defies logic that BOTH could help you improve swing speed, right? If you hadn't read any of the research on this from golf or baseball or cricket, you could convince yourself that one or the other, might work, but not both; it just doesn't make sense. And the research pretty much bears that out; the lighter one doesn't matter, and the heavier one actually slows you down.

The "advantage of the system" is all to the SSG sales and marketing force, because they are selling sticks. When golfers follow the SSG protocol and gain speed, they attribute it to the use of all three sticks, but don't know what WOULD have happened if they had only trained with one stick.

Also, do NOT read this as me saying that there is no benefit to swinging something other that a stick the weight of your normal driver. The Orange Whip is great for sequencing, and a heavy club can do wonders for strength and flexibility and swing plane. Just not swing speed...

I think the flexibility benefit and range of motion for your twist is why the heavy one is in there. And I would absolutely assume why they have you doing the reverse swings. Also people may be seeing gains with the ssg sticks simple because they are probably doing the stretch warm-up on their site if they bought their sticks. And the warm-up is totally range of motion stuff.

The reverse, or non-dominant, swings are legit; everybody in the business is going to have a player in a swing speed protocol do those, just like lifts and medicine ball throws and other weight room exercises are done with both sides.

Also, lest anyone misunderstand, I own (and used) the SSG sticks. What I was doing bugged the crap out of me because it took a LONG time and a lot of effort for VERY minimal gains. I've kicked myself many times over for not doing a better job of research before I bought them, but instead buying into (literally) marketing hype.

to those asking about swinging just a driver i would recommend trying to swing one that is at least slightly lighter than your gamer. I have a backup small headed driver with a 40 gram shaft thats useful

What are the weights of each of the three sticks, and how does that compare to a normal driver? I have an old r7 with four weights I could just pull out/tweak to get the right weight. Not too excited about spending $200 on a few sticks if I don't need to....

I'm a bit skeptical if this whole superspeed thing will help me but also a bit intrigued. Currently around 112 or so driver swing speed, ball speed just below 170. Wouldn't mind hitting the 120/180 barrier but don't want to mess up my swing to get there....Phil seems to spray the ball all over the place with his additional club head speed.

ย

The stretching / warmup video definitely seems like something that will help. I think I'll just do that everyday anyways to improve flexibility...sitting in an office chair for 10hrs/day takes a toll on the body.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that the whole point of overspeed training is to get your body to swing faster than normal. Swinging your normal driver won't really get that done--although TPI studies have shown that just swinging your driver hard on a regular basis will raise your average swing speed, but it takes quite a while. Overspeed training is a proven concept. The reason you swing the green stick is for speed. The reason you swing the red stick is for strength. I'm not sure the SSG protocol is the best one out there, but I also have some issues with the methodology of the "study" that shows you get better gains with the blue stick only. I think the weakness of the SSG training is that you do too much and it makes you train when your muscles are tired/slow. That is very counterproductive according to many folks.

ย

Anyway, the important thing is that you train for speed and be smart about it. That's what will help in the long run.

Not sure the exact weights but imo its more important to get a stick or club you swing a tad faster. Get some speed measuring device such as ssr. If you hit 112 on that with your gamer take weights out of the r4 until you consistently hit 120-125 on the ssr.

Anyone see this, looks like a new product. Welcome to SonicSpeed GolfYou screw it into your own driver shaft (they have Taylormade, Callaway, etc.). Light medium and heavy, but their heavy weight is still less than the weight of a driver head.

Any idea what bolt they use, that screws into the end of a Taylormade adapter?

Hey, make no mistake about it: I believe 100% in speed training AND golf specific strength training. I like the stuff in the videos, and do versions of it myself; I do three separate workouts a week set up for me by one of the best golf fitness facilities in the country. None of which has ANYTHING to do with swing three sticks 12,000 times a year.

History of left handedness in my family, I suspect the fact i am overtaking my dominant side so quickly is a sign I may not be right handed.

I understand your position about volume and don't necessarily disagree, especially in-season.

My best friend is a 2X Top-50 Golf Digest Golf-Fitness Trainer at one of the best gyms in the US, TPI Certified, and works with PGA and LPGA Tour pros every day. He uses SuperSpeed with some of his clients; I actually got my set from him.

Mostly, I just disagreed with your overreaching promise "that NO golf fitness professional or TPI-type facility is going to have you swing a heavier stick to help you get faster."
