SuperSpeed Golf training system

Recommended Posts

Update for me: I've been doing a lot of gym work with a very smart golf-specific trainer, and then gotten back to training with the blue stick only. The gym work has taken me to the next level. My baseline SS of late had been 95 +-2mph hitting balls with my driver. Now my baseline is 100+-2mph. During my speed workouts (a series of blue swings both ways, followed by more swings hitting balls with my driver), I have consistently gotten up to 105-108 hitting balls. I have gotten the blue stick up to 119 a whole bunch of times (but never reached 120 grrrrrrr). So I am pretty pumped about this progress. Once I get back home and can incorporate my green stick into the process, I feel confident I can get to 110 (or more?) hitting balls. FWIW, I'm 66.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been using the blue swing speed radar for speed training at home for awhile now and also at the range hitting balls.  I just bought the 2021 PRGR and noticed right away that the PRGR is way more consistent as the SSR jumps all over the place plus/minus 5 mph every swing (I always thought it was me!).  I've also noticed that the SSR reads much higher than the PRGR, I'd say consistently 6-7 mph more, sometimes as much as 10 mph more!  Has anyone else had a similar experience.  I kind of figured I wasn't swinging 122-124 at the range with the SSR...probably more like a realistic 115-117 on the PRGR.

I wonder if this is why Superspeed went away from the SSR?

Not sure if I need to do something different or take a long break or what.  I reached 118-119 with my Driver a few months back and now I can’t seem to top 116-117.  I do protocols at least twice a week when I’m home and it feels like I’m stuck in a downward trend. First thought Is trying a new/different routine or adding the super speed C stick.   Any advice is welcome.

I bought the SuperSpeed clubs and Blue SSR from Amazon. I think SSR reads 3 to 4 mph faster than reality. I checked my driver swing speed at Roger Dunn and it was 94 to 96. With the SSR, I am seeing 97 to 99 at home. I will just mentally subtract 3 mph from the SSR reads.

To confirm, the goal of this is to swing as fast as you possibly can, form be damned, correct?  I've had the sticks, have not done the training for more than a week or two and now I'm committed to 6-8 weeks then re-evaluating.  I have a power leak in the way of an early release + the faster I swing, the more across the ball I get.  Not sure if I should be working on these consciously with a later release and a more in to out path?  Also, have those who have done it placed a ball out to the side so you are making as close to a real swing as you can?

I have been using the super speed sticks for 12 weeks now. Just 2 week off finishing protocol 2. I do 3 sessions a week and nothing else due to lockdowns. I am really impressed. I use the blue swing radar and record the best swing speed for the session for each club.  I put a tee in the ground a grip length away from the radar to aim at and for consistency. I do the full warmup then take best of 5 driver swings before and after the session. 1st session Day 1 driver before was 94mph. After 100mph. Last week I had a great session, driver before 116 driver after 124.  I’m running a spreadsheet and can post my result when I finish the 2nd protocol in 2 weeks.
I went the range over the weekend I use a SC100. I had some nice 110 -117mph. Prior to using super speed my absolute max driver was 106mph.
hope this inspires.

After 10 days and 4 sessions I have increased my driver club head speed from 96 to 100 mph for a roughly 10 yards gain on my launch monitor, from 245 to 255 yards. This is my swing speed when I play which is not the absolute fastest. During overspeed practice with superspeed sticks I swing my driver to 106 mph max during the last session. Hope to increase to at least 105-106 mph swing speed or ideally 110 mph swing speed after a few months.

I worry about injuries so I am also working on strength and flexibility training. I do strength training 3 days a week and golf focused stretches 3 times a week.

Here is my overspeed training with superspeed sticks update after 2 weeks. I have seen a club head speed increase of 10 mph with the driver practice swing. I haven't have a chance to played or gone to the range in the last 2 weeks so I am not sure how it will translate to on course distance.

Out of the three swings, I recorded the max speed. I didn't record speed for the left hand swings but they are generally 15 mph slower.

I have a golf simulator at home but I am not hitting the driver because it is so loud and too dangerous with misses that could ricochet back to me.

Note that the practice swing with the driver is maximum effort. I don't think I can really swing this hard on the course. When playing it probably would be 5 mph slower swing speed for control. My target is 105 mph to 110 mph swing speed on the course hopefully after 6 months. This means the driver practice swing speed has to reach 112 to 115 mph and light stick swing speed has to be around 120 mph.

My practice swing speed gains seem to slow down. I was able to play on a golf course and brought my radar unit with me. My driver swing speed on the course was between 93 and 98 mph with total distance between 230 and 250. I couldn't replicate my max driver speed (without ball) during practice sessions. However, I am only 3 weeks in and seem to have gained about 10 yards. Hope to get another 10 to 15 yards eventually.

I can’t seem to get past 106 mph with the green. Every session it’s the same thing.

I don't believe that there is a 'normal'.  Everyone is different and we all have some max speed that we are not going to get past.  Overspeed training might work really well for some and not so much for others.  So I would say stick with it and see if you can get to a next level.  If you cannot move up to a higher speed then maybe try something else.

For myself I have found over the years that a bit of weight training and also some slow swings with a weighted club in conjunction with whatever overspeed training I am doing seems to be effective.

I get up to 114 with the green, it hasn't entirely translated to real driver club head speed. Today at the range I was able to swing the driver 102 mph at a ball but 96 to 98 is more realistic.

Aw man that's discouraging for me! My baseline was 92, yesterday I hit 109 with the green. I haven't been out on the course since August (kinda done for the year).

I'm looking at your chart above and my step out swings don't get anywhere near yours. Mine stay in line with my normal swings.

I think I am also overdoing it without a clear recovery period. I do Super Speed on M/W/F and The Stack System on T/Th/Sa with a day off on Sunday. So maybe I would see greater gains if I was only doing one with proper rest in between? I have seen small incremental gains with both along the way...

I'm on my 4th week of Super Speed and 3rd week of The Stack System...

From a quick look, it seems like The Stack System is very similar to SuperSpeed so I think you are doing it too much with 6 days a week.

I didn't measure my real swing speed with a ball before doing this. My baseline of 96 mph with the driver was without a ball which is always faster than my driver swing speed with a ball. I am sure that my baseline swing speed (with a ball) was slower, probably in the 90 to 94 mph range. With the current 96 to 98 mph, that is a 5 mph increase. I think that is good for 3 weeks.

keep at it you’ll see the numbers creep up. I started green stick at 105mph on 18th july. And have had 130 in my last 3 sessions.

I’ll be doing the last session of protocol 2 tomorrow then will post all 14 weeks of my results. What you’ll see is as super speed predicts. A early big jump and a level off. What I found was after the big jump that the increase has been incremental over time. Some days it was the green stick sometime the others. Even if by 1 mph, and some days due to being tired/sore back a decrease but it always bounced back.   Overall if you stick with this overtime you will be faster than you were. This is not a quick fix Don’t be discouraged keep at it. Stay tuned for some results

ok its the end of protocol 2, green spreadsheet is protocol 1 and blue spreadsheet is protocol 2, also included is a trendline for all results.

overall im very happy and cant wait to start protocol 3. i have a driver fitting tomorrow at coolclubs looking forward to a new driver shaft.

Now as from my 1st post above, 3 times per week (M,W,F) use blue ssr and put a tee in the ground a grip length from radar at 45 degree angle. i have learnt alot about my swing from this journey. ie vertical force front leg, softer grip, body rotation and release point( i tended to drag the handle, not so much now). when i goto the range i use a sc100 and prior to SSG my absolute max wax 106mph. Now when i goto the range if i dont really try i can hit that number. i have hit a max of 117 at the range but i tend to sit around 110 - 112. like i said i am happy.

all my results in the spreadsheet are only from the fastest swing from each stick. im happy to answer any questions. keep at it people this is good stuff

Impressive chart skills!

I'm just not seeing that spread like you did. I just completed my 4th week of Protocol 1. I mean I am seeing 1-2 mph each session. Sometimes it's green, sometimes blue, sometimes red. I just started swinging my driver when I'm done after seeing your chart. Today I was at 100 mph with my driver and my baseline was 92 mph. Yesterday I was at 99 with my driver on the Stack System and my baseline was also 92. So I guess it's working but our numbers/progression are so different.

I’m not sure what the stack system is. But I think I read above your doing both superspeed and stack alternate days? I’ve watch the webinars for superspeed and they clearly advise of a rest day in between. You sound like your overtraining and not getting the recovery.
Being an old gym junkie from 20yrs ago. The gym work is not where you grow it’s in the recovery. I’d try dropping the stack system and do SSG 3 days a week and see how that goes.

I was on average slower at the start of the week. If I gripped to hard I was slower. Mind you I was scared of letting the red one go. I found if I try and aim behind my target (tee in ground) I got faster results.

ive read every page in this forum (took a while) and no one had put all their results like I did on here. Which is why I did, I just wanted people see the whole picture to see if it’s worth it. Which is what we want to see. I hope this helps.

just got myself a radar for the first time, and.. thats it. No speed sticks, stack system or anything else.

doing a few minutes left and right swings 4 times a week on top of my normal practise. Maybe 30-40 swings a session with a driver.  Making up my own protocol as I go really. Seen some early results, so I'll guess I'll be the control group for whether  you 'really' need to buy the sticks as well.

If you don't want to spend $200, you can buy the 3 imitation sticks for $120 on Amazon. Don't try to reinvent something that people have invested time and money in to develop.

I started to measure my driver speed with foam balls. I use foam balls because it is just too dangerous to hit real balls in my garage. Some how with a ball I am just much slower than practice swing with no ball. But with no ball, it may just be wild swings with incorrect form.

Notable updates:

  • Speed is creeping up, green stick reached 115 mph for the first time
  • Practice swing speed with driver increased to 109 mph, highest ever
  • Swing speed with a ball reaches 102, majority of swings are in the 98 to 101 mph range
  • Started to feel more comfortable with ~ 100 mph swing speed on the course. Driver is still not as consistent as before. Only seeing 5 to 10 yards longer, not the expected 15 to 20 yards if comparing club head speed before and after. I may not hit the center of the club face now.
  • Speed with blue and red sticks somehow not increasing much

I have don this system off and on since it came out. The last year I just used the medium weight stick. I started doing this after that study came out. I recently went back to using all three sticks. I will only use the 5% stick moving forward. For me no need to use all 3 sticks ever again... I have been able to maintain my 114 50 years old. When I started years ago I had dropped to 103. Great system just make sure to do it before lifting weights. Two x a day has enabled me to maintain as we know the gains are not permanant...

Looking good. It’s all creeping up which is great. Keep it up.

I always swing slower when aiming at a ball. But the speed is more than it was when I started. I had a driver fitting yesterday at cool clubs. They use trackman. I was swinging at 110. So I would say I’ve gone from 100 to 110 in 14 weeks. I have a ping g410+ and gone from a alto 55 stiff to a fijiKura pro 2.0 6 x stiff tour spec. What a massive difference the change in shaft made. We went through about 10 different shaft/settings.  Starting SSG protocol 3 tomorrow. Hopefully will see the 3-5% second jump SSG predict come soon.

For those that also do strength training, do it after overspeed session and not before if they happen to be on the same day. Yesterday I did strength training before and then 2 hours after that I tried overspeed training and my speed was 6 to 7 mph slower. I scrapped the overspeed training half way.

My strength training is nothing serious. 25, 20 and 15 lbs dumbbells for chest, shoulders, back and arms. 3 sets of 20 pushups and sit-ups. Pulling bands (swing motion) and balance training.
