'17 M1 Fairway. The second coming?

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone else has hit these and if they agree that this is the best FW that Taylormade has made since the original RBZ?

In my opinion, these things are perfect. Compact, open, fairly deep, has awesome turf interaction with the smaller/filled speed slot, it sounds and feels as good as anything I've ever hit, and it's extremely workable. Better than the original M1 FW without a doubt. I'm not sure they could have done any better. Can't wait to see all the different iterations of this surface in the coming year. I have a feeling that 1 or 2 of these will he making it in the bag this year. Anyone else?

The best fairway Tmag ever made is the RBZ Stage 2 Tour. That thing was perfect.

I have to agree with you. I did not like the cosmetics of the head, but I had the 3HL shafted with a Nunchuk and that club was downright dangerous.

A kid who is like the little brother I never had was having a really hard time off of the tee for a while, and he used my club at the range and asked if he could use it while he got his driver situation sorted out. I of course lent it to him and after not getting it back for a few months, he asked how much the purchase price would be. Me being a softie, I let him have the club for way cheaper than I should have.

My vote for all time favorite TM fw is the r7 TP. Tried a lot of their newer ones but nothing has come close.

I always wonder why many on the boards want to have an open face fairway wood, when arguably the greatest ball striker of all time (Ben Hogan) had his woods at least 3 degrees flat and 3 degrees closed.

Makes one think.

My miss is a hard hook, my grip is on the stronger side of neutral, my preferred shot shape is a fade and I like the look of open faced clubs. And I'm not Ben Hogan so what works for him won't necessarily work for me.

Doesn't really make you think at all lol. 99.5% of golfing public doesn't swing it like hogan, have the flexibility and swing plane he had. Comparing hogans specs to wrx lol that's hilarious. Why don't we all use jumbo grips like Watson or play a Newport 2 like Tiger. Common man...

Open face allows majority of users to swing with higher SS and avoid the dreaded lefts. It's all just visually more pleasing to many guys.

Almost every tour player plays open face woods eh. Nice try though!

I wasn't trying to start an argument, so I'm not sure where the "nice try though!" comment comes from.

I made an observation. If you have followed tour issue equipment for a while (particularly TM who is gracious enough to have all of the specs on the sticker) lie angles have consistently become more upright, and the heads have become quite a bit more open.

I believe my first tour issue club was a TM r7 16.5 degree fairway wood, which came in at 16.9 degrees, 0.5 degrees closed and about 3 degrees flatter than modern standard. That club is still in the bag. Obviously, it is what works for me and my swing.

But it begs the question, should fitting be done to what will eventually force what the fitter deems to be an ideal swing, or what fits the user's current swing?

I used to be heavy into cycling. There is a fitting "guru" out of Bryn Mawr, PA named Kyle Schmear (sp?) that believes he has an ideal fit depending on measurements he takes. Many riders don't like it, but he believes he is putting the rider in an ideal mechanical position. I happen to like his fitting methods, but it took me a while to adjust (this was 20 years ago or so). Then there is the philosophy of making the rider comfortable in what they are currently doing, which may in fact not be the ideal position for muscle recruitment, posture, ability to breathe freely, etc.

What I don't understand is why they went back to only one sliding weight. I currently use the '16 M1 T3 with the weights spread out. Perfection (to me at least :p)

The weight is heavier and significantly further back in the head than last year's M1. With that bringing the weight further back in the head, I'm going to guess that this club is going to be just as forgiving as last year's was with the weights spread.

Because the next version will have 2 sliding weights and that will be the innovation that they market (guessing)

Nice looking fairway.

Best TMAG fairway, in my humble opinion, was the SFTP 2.0. That club may have been the GOAT period.

I disagree. Tour only 2016 M2 deep face is their best ever fairway wood.

Hogan had one of the most unique swings in history that people are still trying to figure out how to emulate. Not surprised his his club specs are unique as well.

Looks really good, can't wait to get one to replace my current M1 3W. I didn't like the current one as much as I thought I would so I am hoping this one is much better and so far from what I've seen it seems to be great!

To me, the best fairway TMAG has ever made was the 07' Burner tour issue. Best sound/feel from any TMAG one for me. My favorite now is the Cally Big Bertha Pro Tour issue fairway wood (I have a 16*). Absolute best feeling and performing fairway I've ever owned.
