Do you carry a 3 wood or 4 wood, and why?

I carry a ping rapture 3w for tee shots that are a bit tight. I also carry a ping g25 4w for hitting off fairways

I actually switch back and forth between a 14.5* 3 wood and a 16* 4 wood depending on the time of year.   In the summer I play the 3-wood when I get roll. In the winter, I put the 4 wood in the bag wh

Same for me - 4W launches higher / more control / actually hit it farther

I carry Cobra F6 Baffler set to 17.5 and playing at 42". First wood I can consistently hit for distance and get off the ground in eons.

I have always favored a three wood over the four. I currently carry a 917 F2 with a Diamina Blue shaft. I like the three because I often play in the wind, and the three has a lower flight. On a good day, I can keep the knockdown shots near the top of the treeline. As a matter of fact, I should practice that the next time I go to the range. A golfer's "to do" list is never-ending, but definitely in a good way.

Neither! Driver, 18 deg. hybrid, then 3-iron. I have a SLDR TP 15 deg. that I keep around in case I play a really long track (7200+) and will swap it in for a wedge, but that's quite rare these days.

Just don't hit the fairways well enough to merit keeping them in the bag. Right now, my hybrid is about 245 and 3-iron is 220, and I'm rarely hitting a green from a distance further out than that.

Going back to a strong 3W and 5W setup. Hybrids have been hit and miss at the 17*-19* spot. Think 5W will be a better all arounder...

This for me as well... Ideally I've got a setup akin to 8* driver, 13* & 18* fairways, and 22* rescue. Just started hitting my new-to-me Anser metals, and am getting decent results... we shall see...

I've gone back and forth on this topic as well. Right now I'm in a 4 wood and a 3 hybrid and I think that's where I am going to stay for a while. I like the extra height of the offer and I can keep up with, almost, with my old 3 wood so the loss of yards isn't really a big deal to me.

3w and 5w, I have no problem getting either into the air. Titleist 915F for both and they are absolutely awesome, I think these may stay in the bag until they crack.

I go with a 4 wood (or at least 3 wood with 4 wood loft - see below) because I much prefer playing with 4 wedges (PW @ 46, 50, 54, 58), so the 4 wood provides better gapping between driver and 3 hybrid.

I have a PING G30 3 wood on the highest loft setting, so it is somewhere in the neighborhood of 15.5-16*. I had a PING G25 4 wood (16.5* loft) but found that it launched too high despite trying a number of different shaft combinations. The G30 with the Tour 80 S, tipped 1", flies much lower, though my miss tends to be catching it too low on the face.

Agree here completely.. went the 5w route since I would rather open the face by increasing the loft, than closing the face delofting the 3 wood... I do wish Ping would allow at least 1.5 degrees of adjustment each way however, on their drivers as well. The odd 0.8 or 1.0 adjustment seems strange... not much difference between the little + and the big + with a loft change of 0.2 degrees!

I still love the G 5 wood though.. I play it at 16.5, and the smaller head allows me to take it out of the light rough a little easier as well, and I don't really lose much distance compared to the 3 wood at my swing speed...

I must change my response to this topic, because I now carry BOTH a 3-wood (TourEdge Exotics EX10 Strong 3-wood @ 13* loft, 42.75" lg.), AND a 4-wood (TEE EX10 Beta @ 16.5* loft, 42.25" lg.). Sometimes, I drop the driver from my bag entirely; other times, I drop one of my hybrids. I find the 13* Strong 3-wood to be very useful from the tee on most, if not all, holes where I formerly used the driver ... including par-5s. The 4-wood is often used for approaches to long par-5s, as well as on any par-4 that is shorter than 360-370 yards. This leaves me with between 85-105 yards for an approach into those "shortish" par-4s. I have found that, even at age 68, I can reach many par-5 holes (certainly any that are less than 510-520 yards) with the Strong 3-wood + a mid-iron to my 4-hybrid. For 400+-yard par-4 holes, I am typically no more than a 9i or PW out if I hit the Strong-3 off the tee.

About the only time that I keep my driver in the bag is when I am playing very long courses from the tees that I normally play (the whites), or in tournaments where there are no age-specific divisions, and where I am competing with the "young guns" from longer than white tees.

By the way, sometimes I replace the 4-wood with a 17.5* Exotics CB Pro 2 5-wood (41.75" lg.). This is especially useful on courses that have a lot of 320-350 yard par-4s. When I do this, my bag composition is: 13* Strong 3-wood, 17.5* 5-wood, 21* hybrid, 5-iron through 45* (or 46*) PW, 50* (or 51*), 54* and 58* wedges + putter [13 clubs, unless I throw a driver in the bag].

I don't have an issue hitting either one but currently I am bagging the XR 16 4wd at 17 degrees as my only fairway wood.

I was doing a D, 3wd, 5wd, 4H (22 deg) but now trying D, 4wd, 4H so I took both of these fairways out and replace them with this 4wd. I am still trying this out so could change again or change back. So far no issues so I don't see this changing!

My last setup prior to these that I played for many years was D, 4wd, 4H and never thought I was missing anything!

My 910fD and Nike Vapor Flex were both played around 16* and I considered them 4 woods. My 917f2 is set at 15* but is higher launching and spinning. It's almost as long off the tee, and I'm having much better results off the deck with the 917 played as a 3 wood. It goes so much higher that I've even considered dropping it down in the 14* range.

4 metal for me. Still as long off tee and longer off turf because I get better launch. Use 5 wood for tweener yardages btwn 4w and 4 hybrid.

i play both a strong 3wood (13.5 turned down to 13) and 4 wood (17). 3wood is pretty much only for off the tee, 4wood for approaches and tee. works really well for me. i like having options off the tee

3 wood. Debated doing to a 4 or 5 but I like the option to use it off the tee so the additional distance with the 15* vs a higher loft makes more sense for me. Plus if I’m hitting into a par 5, very rarely do I need to fly it all the way there. Usually it’s going to have to run up, so having a lower loft allows more of that

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
