Ping AWT 2.0 Shafts

Recommended Posts

Just trying to get some more quick information on these AWT 2.0 shafts beyond that AWT stands for "Ascending Weight Technology". I hit the iBlades for the first time today and really liked them. I hit them with the Pro Modus 105 S and the Project X 5.5 Rifle shafts...I launched those at 15.5 to 15.8 with a 7 iron which is about right for me...I launch it low. The PX 5.5 was actually the higher of the two which seems odd since I'm pretty sure the Modus typically produces a much higher launch.

I actually thought both of those shafts performed well but the Ping nFlight web fitter is putting me into the AWT 2.0s. I'm planning on giving the AWT 2.0 stiff a shot...just wondered if there's anything special I should be looking for. Has anybody noticed any specific difference between the AWT 2.0 and the Modus or PX shafts? I read in another thread that True Temper makes them so I guess I can expect comparable quality to PX and Nippon? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

A248, are you playing a PING iron currently? if so what shaft are you using in them?

Coming from 712 AP2s with S300s in them.

I read in another Golfwrx thread that someone called Ping and Ping told them that TT makes them. Weird. If Nippon is making them then what's the difference between the AWT and the Pro Modus?

Here's the thread. It's from 2010. They could've just been wrong or it switched from TT to Nippon at some point.

believe me, I have an involved business relationship with PING and also live here in Phoenix.... Nippon now makes the AWT shaft.

I'll assume you mean Dynamic Gold in your AP2. so I would see no reason not to continue with them in iBlade if you like them in S300. If you like your DG S300 and are looking for a change then Modus 105 would be my second recommendation.

TT made the older version AWT. The AWT 2.0 version is made by Nippon.

The AWT 2.0 has a very noticeable weight change though the set. The long irons feel pretty light. I suggest you swing a variety of different clubs, not just the demo 7-iron, before passing judgement on the AWT 2.0.

Yeah I figured you were pretty knowledgeable on the Ping stuff considering your signature witb haha. I'm looking for something that launches a bit higher than the DG S300. I might swing them just to check the numbers but I think I might have more luck with the Pro Modus or AWTs.

Yeah I'd have to try and hit a few different clubs from the set. Most of my hitting is done at a PGA Tour Superstore and I think they only have the 7 irons available for demo. Not sure what shafts the display models have on them but I could snag a 5 iron and 9 iron from there if they have the AWT in them.

Great shaft for a average swing speed smooth swinger. Love mine.

I weighed a cut set of AWT2.0 prior to installation in some TM TP (2009). About an 8g weight difference between 4i and PW. No where near as drastic as 20g+ change on AMT s300.

Either way, AMT2.0 are a fantastic shaft.

I purchased a set of used AWT 2.0 stiff shafts and these were the weights. I removed the ferrules and tried to clean as much epoxy out of the tip as possible.

6i 101.2g

7i 102.6g

8i 104.9g

9i 105.6g

PW 108g

GW 108.2g

I can confirm they are made by Nippon since the laser printing on the butt ends are identical to all other Nippon shafts I've seen.

Awesome thanks for the info. I did get a chance to hit the AWT 2.0 S today. It was only in the 7i so I don't really know whether they would be a good fit for me. Honestly it performed pretty similarly to the Modus 105 S that I hit. Distances were the same, ball speed the same, launch angle had a 0.4 difference, spin was within 100 or so rpm's, same average height, etc. I controlled the Modus much better horizontally though.

Speaking of the Modus...when I was hitting the Mizuno's I was fit into the 105 X. Unfortunately the PGATSS near me doesn't have a Modus 105 X for the Ping irons. Am I right in thinking that the shift from S -> X is primarily going to affect my launch angle and possible my horizontal control?

So I like the feel of the AWT 2.0 but want a consistent weight shaft.... is it safe to assume the Modus 120 would be the answer?

No. I'd look at Modus 105 instead.

No. Modus 105's. They are about 110 grams before trimming and are constant weight.

The 120's are heavier.

Id like to have a little higher launch.....the 105 is a touch low compared to awt....for me

120's launch lower.

Modus 105 is not a low launching shaft. Ping rates them higher launching than AWT. You might want to do another demo.

Ness is on point.. 105's are fairly high launching.

I think it's a great stock shaft offering. I think they feel great, I personally just hit them higher than I'd like and spin them a bit much.

I'm actually going to GG tomorrow to hit the AMT 2.0 in X. It's heavier and lower launching than the S flex.

Of course....I need another set like I need another hole in the head. So bad. Winter in Ohio is expensive for me..

Cut weight of the Nippon 120s is about 105 grams. The "120" is really misleading and people assume they are much heavier than they are.

The X may be a smidge heavier, but probably not by much.

oh...I was going off the Nippon site that says the 120 is 114g compared to the 105 that says 106g.

No, that part is true. I'm speaking of the weight when at playing length. You drop about 6-8 grams.

Going for a demo next week and looking at the i200's. Currently play the DG PRO S300. But I don't really want to pay the $30 upcharge for these. Any recommendations? Mizuno optimizer says I need a firm/stiff tip shaft. Modus 105?

Modus 105 is quite a bit lighter than DG Pro. I think you should go heavier. PX 5.5 maybe, although those are not as heavy either.

I agree with PX 5.5 being a potential fit. Have played them in a few sets. I find them to deliver a nice, solid feel at impact. I think they fight the wind as well as any shaft out there and the 5.5 in particular is penetrating for its weight class. I hit a bunch of shafts recently, including Modus 105, 120 and 125. I ballooned the 105 on too many shots. Launching too high and coming down short. I found a nice fit with the Modus 125 (128g and felt most like an s300), which easily won out from the Nippon trio, but I felt I could get that same solid feel one step down in weight class and am getting Steelfiber 110 regs. In steel in that 110-120 gram range, I have always thought the PX 5.5 is pretty darn good. I am just having issues with a sore right wrist. Yet that firm feel is still what I want. I think they are another shaft where the mistake most often made is players get them too stiff. And if I hate the Steelfibers, I know I will like the 5.5. A little smoother player (I am inconsistent in that area) might benefit from the Nippon AWT. I would bet I would like it them fine in the 4,5 iron, but not in the short irons.
