Many overlooked companies

- Adams

- Bridgestone

- Srixon

- Macgregor

- Wilson

- Tour Edge

- Components – (KZG, Alpha [driver heads])

My bag has gone through a transformation recently to become predominantly Bridgestone, b/f it was mainly Macgregor.

I get a kick out of playing unique products that may be overlooked by the general golfing public, Tour Edge Wedges, Precept ECU Hybrid, HOG putter etc…. After all, golf is a game and games are supposed to be fun.

Wasn’t MacGregor big at one time? Like back in the sixties? Did Jack ever play MacGregors?

I used to play the the Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scots and found them to be fantastic clubs! In a way I wish I had’nt traded them in years ago…I started learning the game with those clubs…TA should have left the original design alone…I actually feel they should resurrect it…I’m sure they would make a killing…

I would have to say TourStage. Outside of these forums, they are virtually unknown in the US. People always look at my X-Drive and Z-101's with this puzzled look. I have a friend of mine that still calls my clubs the "knockoffs".

My vote is for Tour Edge and Adams. For balls, Maxfli Fires.

I understand why better players play Mizuno, Titleist, TM, and to a lesser extent Ping, Nike, and Callaway. But it's too bad more mid- and high-cap players don't try Tour Edge clubs. They are well-made, guaranteed for life, and inexpensive (except for the Exotics woods).

I can't help but reply to this one, I am facing the same problem right now, as my 5 iron and 7 iron are sitting at home curing(The heads came loose I had to re epoxy them). I keep hitting other irons to see f I like anything. The answer invarioubly comes back with a no. The only ones I have truly liked were the Maxfli Revo's I just wish they would bring back a set of forged 845's in the original design and I would forget all about this craze I am on about getting blades.

I guess thats part of the reson I am looking at blades. None of the CB's I have hit come close to workability and feel that I have with the 845's.

Never have I met a person that hit 845's that didn't wish they still had them. Many of them are now playing the top brands, Mizuno, titliest etc....

Been a while since I have seen 845's in the hands of a pro.

Didn't John Hoeflich design the 845's? I seem to recall that he did. If that is the case, that may give 845 fans cause to pay attention to Nickent since he is their designer now. Heard through the grapevine a 4DX forged set is supposedly in the works.

For clubs.....

Wilson and what was Spalding (Top Flite now owned by Callaway) have always made clubs that are just simply well made, and well engineered for the average and above average golfer.....they gave and still give better value for money than most...minus the hype.

I really think Wilson's surge as a tennis company irrevocably hurt there golf image. The GE2000's are still IMO a classic...

MacGregor not respecting there core business and customers is a lesson in itself. Good to see them coming back...

For balls.....

SRIXON have been making balls for many of the bigger guns for quite a while - and were reasonable late in the direct selling game....(btw - the non premium models for bridgestone and srixon and a few others are made in south east asia - read Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand)

PINNACLE balls (made by Titleist) are for me the most underrated in today's market......Top Flite's the best value along side of them and glad to see they are finally getting some love....

Peace....
Ping and Nickent. Everyone on this board is basically a TM whore, then titleist, then cally. Ping makes IMO the best clubs for any am. that is willing to not ego play blades.
Ping???????????

over-priced, over-rated.....but not "over-looked"

That's not entirely fair. Ping makes some good stuff. Results don't lie. They've been top of the gi market in my opinion forever. Their presents on tour is undeniable as well....which makes the pick even more confusing.

I know people who haven't golfed in their lives that "know" Ping and think they are the best.

Pretty much every brand that came to my mind has been named.
I'll throw Nitro in there for balls.

Consider in the 1940s MacGregor had on staff: Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demeret and a number of other top players. They were THE company at one point in time with two top lines; Tourney and Tommy Armour.

Nicklaus played MacGregor throughout his career (67-68 VIPs were designed by him (he did other design work later , as well, along with David Graham) and he carried a 945 Eye-O-Matic all through his persimmon days) owned a sizable amount of the company for a while, but sold it when he purchased Toney Penna Golf and re-branded it as Nicklaus in the early 90s....Incidentally Toney Penna began his design tenure at MacGregor...Joe Powell as well.
