How do you guys test balls? Interested in doing a comprehensive evaluation once my season starts

I play both of the balls when I go out. I'll hit 2 drives, evaluate the distance and feel and that. I'll then grab them and hit them both from the same spot for second shot and repeat. If there's nobody around I'll hit a bunch of shots around the green with both.

I'm not playing for score during these rounds so I'll try to hit high, low, fade, draw. I'll hit every shot imaginable. Even punch shots out of trees and stuff just to really get a good feel for what the ball will do.

Considering I was a ball HO last year I need to get rid of the 18 dozen I bought at Costco for $24.99 last year. Hex controls, hex softs and a few superhots

No more ball ho'ing going forward.

I say that now, lets see how long that lasts

I'm going to give the new TP5x a shot. Currently gaming V1x and TPX..... I think I actually like the TPX more than the V1x, so I'm really chomping at the bit to they the new TP5 lineup!

Sorry if i am reinventing the wheel here but would it be possible for a big retailer to sell a "testing box" ?

Let's stay I have no idea what ball I want to play this year and want to try a lot of different models.

I think it would be great to be able to buy a box of 12 balls including for example :

- 2 Pro V1

- 2 Chromesoft

- 2 TP5

- 2 Snell

- 2 B330

- 2 whatever

I've played a few different versions of the B330, but no matter what I always end up coming back to the XV. It lasts, has low spin of the driver and checks well on the greens without being harsh on the club face.

The Bridgestone is a great ball, and if the xv wasn't around it would definitely be one of my picks.

Although, I have been pretty intrigued by these Pro V1 "knock-offs" like Vice, Snell, and others.

I believe Bridgestone is doing something similar where they put a sleeve of E6 Soft and E6 Speed as well as a sleeve of ProV1 and V1X. I like the idea, especially if you have a product you think can keep up with or outpace another, but the drawback is some players will like the competitor's product better.

My local golf shot does something similar, they just sell sleeves of 3 or single balls so you can test.

I have 2 dozen each of the Maxfli Softfli and Gamer Soft so I am in no rush to buy balls. However, each season I do give a few balls a try and for 2016 I plan to try a sleeve of the updated Supersoft to see if it is any better around the green, the Gamer Tour (yes, you can buy a sleeve) to see if I get better distance than a couple of years ago, and a dozen of the MG Tour C4 to see if I can handle a higher spinning ball. And whatever happens to catch my attention in the pro shop.

What clubs do you guys believe are most important to work well with the ball when testing? Driver, putter, wedges?

I've heard Spieth talk about finding a ball for his driver and working from there.

I am a bit surprised by Spieth's answer since most superior golfers can get distance with most balls but they are hunting birdies and approach shots and putting seem to me to be more important. As a high handicapper like myself with a lower SS I do look at the driver first since I need distance and low spin of the driver to help keep my ball in the fairway. After that prerequisite, I look at my approach clubs and how the ball hold the greens. As for putting, I have not found a ball that I cannot putt with but prefer the feel of some balls over the other, but I am a 17 HCP and will have a couple of three putts per round. I would expect a low handicap player like yourself to start with the short game and work back to the driver.

This is also how I do it, and its kind-of a boolean test. There are certain balls that I notice significant performance degrade with off the driver. For example, I have no idea why, but the Srixion balls in the green box (i think they are soft) I hit nowhere off the tee. I don't know why, but I lose like 12 yards. Right there, your out. So its not so much he means picking the v1x cause its 304 over the B330 thats 302, but more dropping out a huge slew of balls that, for whatever reason, don't maximize distance - not enough spin for carry, etc... Another example (for me) that makes no sense is the DT Solos. I hit them nowhere off the tee. After a tee testing session, for me, the four left were Z-Star XV, 330 (not S), v1x and Gamer Tour. Then those four went to the green. 10-13 fell off. The 330 was absolutely the longest, but it wasn't longer by much at all. Some of the balls, though, were way shorter for some reason. SO I think (just think) Spieth means a boolean "is it in the group at or right at my max distance" for each ball to eliminate a bunch of balls rather than he takes the longest period. For example, for me, some "premium" balls were shroter - like the callaway ones in the red box. i hit 12 and they were shorter than the others by a not insignificant amount.

Its just too hard to test starting in short game / at the green if your testing 12+ balls. Its not easy to see the best. Driver? its pretty easy, and then you can go test the 2-4 finalists in the green and on the approach.

As I said in another thread, anyone in this thread looking for a new ball try Gamer Tour from Top Flite. The ball is incredible for me. It is indistinguishable from a v1x in how it acts for me on the course, and I am very likely to make the switch, at least in non-tourney play.

AThompson. XV for sure over Bridgestone. I've played both. XV is longer spins more on approach and the feel is about the same. XV maybe a hair softer. This is the 5th generation Z Stars and imo their best yet.

3 Wood: TM M1
Irons: Cobra King 3-PW, Tour Trusty GW, PM Grind LW (Also have a set of Srixon 545's 3-PW)
Ball: Srixon Z star, CS, Q Star, Project A
Putter: Metal X #7
Bag: Sun Mountain C130 Stand
