New $500 Flightscope personal launch monitor (MERGED)

Recommended Posts

Pretty sure this is what everyone wants. Haha

Yeah, but we see that the individual hardware components can be manufactured and sold relatively inexpensively... it seems taking something like SkyTrack and adding an optional radar add-on and then averaging the ball speed data and integrating the club speed data wouldn't be all that difficult. It seems that, at the low end, everyone focuses on a single type of measurement and tries to calculate what it doesn't capture instead of integrating an additional off-the-shelf sensor that could do the job better than their algorithm.

Flightscope units are going to measure spin, they always have.

I'd love to see a comparison between this and the ES14 Pro. Same price range. ES14 Pro measures spin and doesn't require the metallic dots, so that could save money in the long run I suppose.

I have seen mixed reveiws on the ES14 Pro though, so maybe this will be more accurate and thus more worth it. A personal launch monitor in this price range is something I'd really like to add to my practice.

Sorry, but this is how misinformation gets spread. The ES14 DOES NOT measure spin, in no way shape or form.

I'd be fine with just this if its spin measurement is semi-accurate. Measuring spin should go a long way to making the rest of its calculations more accurate as well. The assumptions made for launch angle will be its biggest weakness, but maybe knowing spin will be the piece of the puzzle that makes it more accurate than an ES14, if spin is even taken into account in that calculation. I'm fine with using the metallic dots if they stay on, since my use case will be in a garage sim.

I suppose the word "measures" may have been the wrong one to use. There is obviously a difference between it calculating spin and it measuring spin. What I mean is that both units give spin numbers. It'd still be interesting how different spin numbers are between the two.

There's a pretty good comparisson of the ES14 to a GC2 on YouTube... the findings are that it does a pretty good job with what it actually measures (ball speed, club speed), but pretty mediocre at what it calculates from that, especially carry distance.

I think I may have seen that video. IMO, in this price range, we can't expect too much. However, if this new MEVO can in fact measure spin using the metallic dots and it can do so somewhat accurately, that would be an amazing achievement for this price point.

I think the people who will be bothered by the stickers are the ones who might want to use it regularly outdoors at a range (not their own balls, not easy to recover). My biggest question is whether or not spin is taken into account in the other calculations when it's known (and assumed/calculated when it's not), or just displayed when it's known and not factored into the other calculations. If it's the latter, it's not nearly as compelling to me.

As an current Xi owner, I will be more than a little ticked off, if this gives reasonably accurate launch angle and spin data, something that currently requires me to double my investment. Hopefully Flightscope will offer a more cost effective upgrade to gain these data points when this product is released.

I will be keeping an eye on this product.

Pretty sure launch angle will be calculated as it looks like you have to select a club/loft.

I tend to think that you could get a lot more for a lot less if you were paying for it at cost, but no one has really driven the prices down. It's starting to happen with units like SkyTrak, but if there's no competition, the companies have no reason to sell for any less then they do. It's not a consumer's market yet, it's the companies that really hold the upper hand on such a niche market.

On a serious note, I wonder if this is going to be good to be used on the actual driving range as opposed to just indoor/outdoor net/cage environment.

Exciting when it comes from a reputable name in Launch monitors, and WRX should know their role here, and make a test comparison to both other low priced personal LMs like this, but also up against the more expensive LMs professionals use to give the readers the best possible info on what to buy for their needs and economy limits.

If im not mistaking, Flightscope is a sponsor to this forum, so it should be easy (one way or another) to get a test run done, or maybe we have to "force" our "new man on the team" Mark Crossfield to make a test for us, since "equipment" is more than just clubs now.

DO NOT SEND PMs WITH CLUB TECH QUESTIONS - USE THE PUBLIC FORUM.

The fact that it's FlightScope is promising. I think it all depends on if the spin measurements are incorporated into the calculations when known, or just displayed. We know Smash and Carry are going to be calculated numbers, and I assume vertical launch angle will be too (though if it's measured, it could be a major game changer). I would think Flightscope would have pretty well developed algorithms for calculating these but I think taking measured spin into account is key to those calculations being accurate... when it's not, you get numbers that are either overly conservative (like with the ES14 on good strikes) or extremely optimistic (like with a low-club strike on the ES14).

Would like to know if this can be used for swing speed only. Es14 and swing caddie only picks up swing speed if you hit a ball. If so and spin is accurate, this is going to be a really cool tool. Even if you had to be indoors w the magnetic dots to increase spin accuracy, I'll take it. Or just put stickers on range balls but that might get expensive.

Any idea what they mean by: SPIN RATE (when metallic dot is used) ??

pretty sure it means you have to put a little metallic doc sticker on the ball before hitting for it to accurately measure spin rate, not sure about if its needed outside. Other flightscopes you do this as well for more accuracy indoors I believe?

This is correct, outdoors no sticker is needed, but if this mevo has a different radar system it may need them for outdoor use as well, we shall see.

My understanding is, neither device actually measures SS. It is calculated based off ball speed. This is the same thing the pricey GC2 does as well. I reckon this device is no different and you'll need to hit a ball.

It says it can calculate smash factor on the product listing, so wouldn't that mean it would have to give swing speed. I have never been this excited for anything ever in golf. If this is accurate to within a yard or 2 I'm totally buying one.

Give it some time, a modern trackman or Gc2 hmt will be available for $1000...as technology incteases and becomes more available more people will make these items and for lesser cost......it's simple economics.....

Remember the VCR...

More people coming into the field just drives prices down.....

This new device is prolly just as good if not better than store monitors and that's what most people use anyway...at least most of threads here are with numbers based on them......so whatever

Personally I just go and hit the club on course now....don't even hit it, but I swing differently on monitor and certainly don't trust most off em
