R Motion Golf Simulator

What do you guys think of the new r motion simulator (I guess you could call it) that was introduced by protee this week at the PGA Show in Orlando? Here is the link if you have not yet seen it: http://www.rmotiongolf.com/

It seems like it could be really cool, and I am all for cheap home golf simulators. They claim it will retail for $299. The question I have is the accuracy. How could something that is attached to the club shaft measure ball speed, spin, launch angle, etc. which protee claims that the device does? I assume they are calculations but how accurate would they be?

If anyone has heard anything more about this or tried it out themselves I would love to hear your feedback. The optishot is a cool idea, but lacks accuracy. If this could bring more accuracy to the table and it seems to have much better software, then this could be great idea by protee. If any of you have heard anything more about this I would love to hear it.

Probably about the same as a SkyPro. Looks like you just move the sensors around per club.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

Made by the same guys as Skytrak, seems pretty cool. I would agree I think it is better than Optishot @ the about same price point.

As far as the how I saw something about using regressive algorithms w/ a Trackman which seems like a pretty good way to do it. Only thing that seemed crappy was you only get four sensors , so if you want to play a full round you are going to have to pony up and buy some more.

I'm looking at this as a possible replacement for OptiShot... leaning more towards an older Vector Pro (predecessor to SkyTrak), but this would be cheaper, currently supported, and I have a buddy that would likely get it too for online play.

I am also curious about this simulator. I can't find much info on it. Can you share a link where you found this or was it from a different source?

This would be really cool if it is even remotely accurate for ball flight.

This looks like a very credible product. Comes from a reputable company and priced right. I guess right out of the package, connect using Bluetooth to a laptop, using your net and mat, and start generating numbers. Can always upgrade to the projector/screen. A few of us are playing simulator golf this winter at a local course, and are having a great time. If this is anywhere close to that experience it would be worth it

For those of you who don't want to scour, I will paste the comment about the trackman data below.

"I got to hit some shots with the R-Motion today at Dennis's booth at the PGA Merchandise show in Orlando. I have to say I was definitely impressed. I first walked up to the booth to see Dennis hitting shots into a TGC projection screen. I looked around for a bit trying to find where the readings were coming from. I didn't see any sensors in the mat, no launch monitor on the ground, no doppler radar overhead...I was dumbfounded. He turned around and I asked what sorcery he was up to now?! He didn't speak a word, just pointed at the club shaft and laughed. There it was, a little usb thumb drive looking device clipped to the top of the shaft. Of course it was actually R-Motion sensor with bluetooth communication to the PC. Brilliant!!!

After owning the full ProTee setup and a GC2, I'm definitely in the market for one of these. I don't mind choosing accuracy over precision here. I was able to produce a fade, slice, draw, hook, and straight shot just like normal. Club statistics were good and obviously TGC as the setting was tremendous. This is not the same $300 you spend to get a piece of garbage like the Optishot. This was really cool. I found out they calibrate all the R-Motion sensor output data against a Trackman in order to develop their trajectory algorithms--no wonder it works so well. Little bit of statistical regression and 10,000+ swings later you have a pretty good proxy for true ball flight. Hopefully getting on the list to test the unit further and provide more feedback here."

If you want to read this section, this guy elaborates more in a few comments.

I think I'm sold. I will buy one when available and try to put up a review and video when I get it.

I did mean to ask this question. About what would it cost to get a screen and projector similar to what the demo is showing.

You might be able to scrape by with a Supertex screen and some craiglist luck on the projector for around $500-600. Though that is the absolute lowest imo. Realistic budget for those is an easy $1k.

If you're just looking to test the waters with a projector, check around eBay for a Promethean PRM-10 or PRM-20 projector. These are re-branded Sharp 4:3 1024x768 ultra short-throw projectors used in classrooms for use with Promethean Smart Boards (dry erase boards that would interact with the PC). They can be had in the $30-$50 range and bulbs are dirt cheap (under $20) if needed. Just be sure to get one with the remote or budget another $10-$15 for the remote, as it is necessary for use.

I'm watching and waiting for feedback as well. I'm trolling eBay for a Vector Pro, but may grab one of these for when simulator fun is more important than gathering the most accurate data.

One would think they would be promoting the heck out of R Motion given the price point of the product and easy access to YouTube but there is only 1 short video. I've already priced a gaming laptop (which can be crazy high), measured spaces in my bonus room and bought a used driving range mat for 30 bucks. All this and no news. Kind of ridiculous really (not sure if I am referring to myself or the company)!!! Maybe I should just get a Trackman or Optishot. LOL!!

Same here, and Digital Trends is definitely more of a tech blog and in no was a serious/dedicated golf publication... similar to Engadget.

I ended up getting a Vector Pro on eBay for ~$400. That, combined with no online play in the included version of TGC, means I'll probably pass on this for the foreseeable future unless one pops up cheap on BST.

I'm eager to see some reviews on this puppy!!! Written, videos or crayons drawn flip book reviews. Anything than what has been provided. I have no real interest in online play. I would just like to tee it up on a rainy or cold day and have fun swinging a golf club. Don't really care about a lot of data. Simply see ball, hit ball, smile and have fun. I have too much stress on the golf course in real life! LOL

I was one of the 10 to get a free one for review. I then had issues with conflicting license problems with my skytrak that just got sorted out. I will do a short video review in the next week or so. They have made updates since this initial review that I have yet to use, such as club adjustments. Anyway, here was my initial review as well as the readings vs ST.

Clips

I have multiple issues with these. First, there simply aren't enough, you need a full bag set. Second, the clips are not very flexible and you get the feeling you may snap one when trying to install it, even just above the hosel on the thinnest part of the shaft. Third, it does't fit on any putter shaft that I have, which is the same issue as not fitting on JR clubs. Lastly, they are not consistent in the holding force between the four clips. One i can install and remove very easy, two are a little tighter and the fourth is way too tight. It takes a lot of effort to get it off.

Connection/Readings/Ball Flight

It connected every time with no issue. In my sessions, I've had it no read at least 3-4 times and it was not due to not waiting the full second before swinging. Launch angles are acceptable for full swing iron shots. It read irons very consistently and shot shape was close to the ST. For the Pitching wedge it did not estimate enough spin. For driver, it is a complete mess, nothing launched over 8 degrees and just did not match the shot shape on many swings and carry was quite low. For Lob Wedge, launch angle is way too high and there is not enough estimated spin. Because this is club based, it just does not read missed shots and gives you a false good shot. See swing 5 for 7 iron data, this was thin and yet gave me a good result. I also hit three shanks, accurately represented on ST but showed a very nice shot on TGC. This is not good. It shows my in to out swing very repeatably and replicates my draw, but it may under estimate side spin.

Game Play

The fact that it comes with TGC is a huge plus. I've used TGC for over a year now and this is light years beyond Optishot and P3. However, it needs more courses. Driver is an issue to be able to play TGC. This needs to be fixed. Iron play is good. Wedge play will be a big problem. TGC does not do well with low spin shots into the green and if you are hitting 50 yds and in it is just going to run out on the green. Putting was fine, but i noticed that everything was zero'd out except speed. This may have carried over for the 0 HLA that i had with the Skytrak. I tried hitting it way offline, but it still read straight. Moving sensor between clubs can be cumbersome

Compared to Opti or P3

You don't have to tape clubs, but you have to move the sensor everytime, so I don't know which is worse here. R-Motion is definitely more consistent in their readings vs both Opti and P3. I did not have the ability to change club settings, but it looks like another beta was released today so this will help. This was very easy to adjust each individual club in both Opti and P3 so it remains to be seen if R-Motion gets this fixed. R-Motion does not give you the 300+yd drives or the crazy clubhead readings that Opti does on occasion. It needs to have something similar to Opti that you can pick your shot height better. For the price point it's at, i would definitely pick R Motion over Opti or P3 based on it's consistency and the software it comes with.

Compared to ST reading

See attached table. Launch angle was OK for irons but off on Wedges and Driver, Spin estimation was OK for irons but off for wedges. For driver it looks like they are keeping it in low 2k. Ball speed was fairly close for wedges and driver, but slightly higher for iron. CHS was very close for irons and driver. HLA was usually very close for most shots. Carry had a pretty wide margin.

Good

TGC

Consistent readings

Iron readings

Connectivity

Bad

Clips

Driver readings

Short wedge spin

Fake good shots

I also was lucky enough to receive an R-Motion simulator to test out. Initially I've had some issues, so rather than write a poor review I need to spend a little more time with it (once it cools down in my garage attic where my hitting net is).

Initially I couldn't find how to get to the range, it just had me go to play rounds. I spent over 30 minutes trying and retrying to get to a hitting range rather than play a round. I wanted to do that simply to test out the accuracy of the club distances.

The graphics on the game are excellent and run very smoothly but the hassle of installing the clips makes it practically impossible to not buy the expansion pack for all of your clubs, unless you plan on only using 4 clubs for your rounds.

The bluetooth connection between the device and my computer worked very well and the course selection was pretty sweet.

Overall I think it shows potential but I simply need more time to play around with it. Will keep you posted as I do.

Bumping this thread versus opening a new one.

I am thinking about picking one of these up and wanted to see if any other WRX'ers had some feedback. I went to golfsim forums and there is some information but not a lot (those forums aren't nearly as active). Amazon reviews are all 5 stars and very positive.

I really want to get into a golf sim but don't feel like I'm ready to drop 2k on a Skytrack or 3k+ on GC2.

This seems like a simple and cheap solution to somebody who has a net+mat but wants to get more analytical feedback. I already have a gaming PC and a big screen TV I can use, so the cost isn't so much for me to try it out. $299 + another $99 for 10 additional clips doesn't seem too bad for TGC plus a fairly accurate golf sim solution. Plus this seems like something that friends would enjoy coming over to play as well. I really like that you can use Almost Golf balls, which I already have, since I want to setup my sim indoors. If/when I get a projector + impact screen, this won't be as much of a concern. I don't trust my friends! Or myself really...

I know it probably sounds like I've already talked myself into it, but would like to hear some feedback if any other WRX'ers gave this a go.

I did search and see that there was a giveway for these, but I couldn't find the corresponding feedback thread?
