Grossinger's Closed/ Reopening?

Several sources who have talked directly to the owner have said Grossinger's GC in Liberty, NY is closed effective immediately.

Owner is tired of running the gc. Didn't get enough turnout for costs.

Owner is taking a wait and see attitude for the results of racasino being built nearby. Idea is if turnout is good, Grossinger's will then open in a few years w/ new cart paths and other improvements.

In discussion with others, seems the rates would go up substantially but the improvements would be nice.

For those that haven't played Grossinger's Joe Finger designed a brute of 7k yrd mtn course. It is very resistant to scoring w/ 10+ stimp very sloped greens. Pros only scored even to -1 in tournament conditions.

Sorry to hear that. I played it a few years ago, from the middle tees. Shot 10 over my 'cap but enjoyed every minute of it, it was a pretty cool design but not easy. I can't blame the owner. It is in an area where tourism is pretty much non-existent these days, and it is too far from the public golf-starved NJ/NY suburbs to attract regular players from there.

Sorry to hear that. I played it a few years ago, from the middle tees. Shot 10 over my 'cap but enjoyed every minute of it, it was a pretty cool design but not easy. I can't blame the owner. It is in an area where tourism is pretty much non-existent these days, and it is too far from the public golf-starved NJ/NY suburbs to attract regular players from there.

that is why the wait on the racasino success before reopening.

Great course sad to hear it's closing. Try to head out there one a year and did so this past September, glad I did. Very long and the only course with an island green par 5 that I have ever played. Hope it reopens soon.

Know that island green all too well. Have hit way too many balls in the water there.

Nothing like going for the green from a downhill hook lie to a fade target with a wood to long iron im your hands.

Found this thread after trying to find out if it was still open.

Very sad but understandable. Even on weekends the place was pretty empty.

My club (from Long Island) played a couple of rounds a year there since 1987 or so.

Had one of my best rounds ever there about 5 years ago. Shot 70 with a triple (birdied 14, 15, 16 & 18). Still have the ball (of course).

I live in Florida now and was thinking of going up there when my club played it - that's how I found out it was closed. What a shame. One of the very best tests in the northeast at a reasonable price.

From Sept 2019.

One year and about $6 million later, the grounds of the iconic Grossinger's Resort are now a clean slate.

Demolition began last summer and crews recently finished cleanup of the site, part of which was declared a brownfield site by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, according to property manager Henry Zabatta.

Now Zabatta is waiting for the DEC to return to review the site so the project can finish.

Demolition included two phases: The first involving structures that are outside of the 19 acres that were declared a brownfield site by the DEC and then the rest of them.

Zabatta said there currently aren't any plans for the future of the site, but the golf course has continued to be maintained and could be re-opened at any time once a new road leading to the clubhouse is installed.

The course has been closed for three years.

Previously, Zabatta has said redevelopment of the site is expected to be something resort-related.
