PXG Combo Sets

WRXer's, I have decided to pull the trigger on a set of PXG. The longest iron I carry is a 6 so not as much $$$$ laid out as some. I would like a few opinions on a combo set. I think I want the set to be 6-8 0311XF and 9-G as the 0311. My thinking is I really like the looks of both but just have a little more confidence with the XF and I mis-hit the former more often than the latter. I've hit them and demo'd both extensively. I've pondered this decision for some time as it certainly is a good amount of money for a recreational item but hey so are some firearms I own that have only killed paper targets. I look forward to the replies.

I would suggest you don't mix a set like that. The resale value will be terrible. Only a tiny percentage of people would be interested in that make up.

The only reason I bring it up is because they are so expensive and most people would care about the resale. If you don't, then by all means, buy exactly what makes you feel good.

I have a full set of 0311s and think you should go with a full set of those as well. I don't find the 4 iron to be any more difficult to hit than the short irons; in fact, the 4 iron is my favorite club in the bag and it's so good that I wonder if I should bag a 3 iron instead of a hybrid. The clubs are just forgiving. You won't be upset with a full bag of 0311s.

I agree with Jagpilotohio and Morety. PXG sells a lot of combo sets (I have one myself), but it's very unlikely there are many in 6-8 0311XF/9-G 0311.

If you do go with the combo set, you'll need to pay more attention to lofts and gapping. For example, a 0311XF 8-iron and 0311 9-iron would leave you with a six-degree gap. They can obviously be tweaked, but it is something to consider.

Buy what works best for you and gives you the best performance and you have the most confidence in. That being said, just make sure the gaps are right as mentioned above.

My combo is 4-6 GI, 7-8 CB, 9-AW MB and they sometimes get some weird looks like "why you need GI irons and still playing blades" but it's what I like the best and how I shoot the lowest. I can hit blades all through just fine but I tend to get nervous in big moments and start spraying a bit and the GI's have reduced that and really helps my confidence.

I have 3 sets of PXG irons and settled on 4-7 XF and 8-W 0311 and 0311 wedges of many lofts so I can bend them to get exact loft bounce and offset I like

Anyway I chose to go 7 0311XF and 8 0311 cause they look the most similar. The XF 8 looked too chunky and didn't really even fit with the same model 7

Good point and I agree.

not looking to threadjack, but a quick question for pxg iron users who were directly fitted by them. If I were to get fitted for 1/2" shorter than standard, would they still be able to fulfill a request for a d2 swingweight by inserting heavier screws? or are all the screws standard/same weight?

Strangely enough, The screws are not adjustable in the irons, only the woods, and perhaps the hybrids. Not sure about the hybrids.

I know someone who stripped one and ruined it on one of his irons because he was dead set on adjusting the weight. Ooops.

That makes zero sense why they would not be adjustable. Crazy.

The reason is that you have to heat it up to get the screws on the irons out. If you don't heat it up properly, there is a possibility that it will melt the TPE inside. Why take the risk and let anyone do that if there is a chance that it might come back to them? After all, not everyone out there is a savvy, as knowledgeable and as good as people on here on WRX, you guys are the rare, perfect bunch...

The hybrids, on the other hand, use the same weights as the fairways and drivers, thus they are changeable.

Buy a nice handgun and some better irons that cost less than half as much and aren't ugly, spend the rest on a good fitting and new driver.

Okay, honestly buy whatever makes you happy, but resale really shouldn't be a consideration.

Can't agree more

i get that they wouldn't want the end user to be able to change it. But I was hoping during the initial build, they would be able to install different weighted screws to get the headweight/swingweight needed based on various shaft weight and length.

This is some Midwest common sense. I have never understood what is so great about PXG. I've hit PXG 0311 and they feel good, but no better than any other forged club. Spending $2000 on an iron set won't make you a better ball striker.

Get yourself a nice 1911, a set of cheaper clubs, and lessons.

But, if you want to spend that much on clubs, go Miura. They feel better than PXG and they don't look like they took a shotgun blast to the back.

Not only the end user, they don't even want the retailers and builders to change them, either. They adjust the weights for swing weights and total weights purposes by adding tip weights. They come in 1 grams to 8 or 9 grams.

I just bought a set of PXG irons, 4 iron XF, 5-7 0311 and 8-PW 0311T and I also got a 50* and a 19* hybrid. I used the 0311 lofts throughout the set. I'm really enjoying the combo set, different strokes for different folks I guess.

OK. I think it best to scrap the combo set and just go XF. In the meantime I'll just sell a few things to get a new S&W M&P. GOING FOR THE SWEETSPOT THE SIZE OF ALASKA!!!!

The M&P 2.0s are pretty sweet. Much better trigger than the original!

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
