Cold weather gear help

Recommended Posts

Fellow WRXers,

As golf season is about to get under way up here in the Northeast, I was wondering what you guys wear to stay warm. Its usually in the upper 30's/lower 40's when we start to go out and its always been hard for me to find the right jacket to both stay warm and be able to swing. Let me know what you guys think.

Marshall's usually has a very nice selection of technical clothing. I like a long sleeve compression shirt. It will feel way too tight to swing in at first but I forget I'm even wearing it after 15 minutes. That Mizuno windlite sweater is very nice. The Greg Norman sweaters are nice as well. Lots of layers. Ensure you minimize any skin exposure and block the wind and you'll be fine out there.

Nothing beats Icebreaker for cold weather. Pricey and not marketed to golfers but it's by far the best winter gear for every sport.

I've been playing all the way through a Scottish winter and it's usually been a four layer job for me.

FJ base layer, polo shirt and jumper is pretty much standard and then depending on just how cold it is, I have either been wearing a FJ body warmer or more recently when it's been starting to get a little warmer a sleeveless Hyrdolite waterproof top.

That for me keeps me plenty warm but still leaves me free to swing.

Under Armour or equivalent base layer. Pick the shirt's weight based on how cold it will be.

Long sleeve golf shirt

Mizuno Windlite sweater

Long pants

UA or equivalent compression long underwear (only required if it's pretty cold though)

Knit hat (insulated preferred)

Buff (pull it around you neck and up over your face if necessary)

Winter golf gloves

Hand warmers in golf mittens (mine are attached to my Clicgear)

Sunglasses (really helpful with the low sun angles)

Warm socks (wool, etc.) and waterproof golf shoes

Pretty much covers it. I've played down to 20 degrees (also in the Boston area) with no problem. The Windlite is really the key to keep out the wind, but there are other similar pullovers that you can wear. As long as you are walking you can stay pretty warm over all and play whenever you want.

Although I'm really looking forward to some warm weather and better conditions very soon!!

The places I play that get down into the 40's or low 50's, you'll find me mostly wearing shorts, a UA long sleeve mock under a golf shirt and one of my Goretex covers or Goretex Zero Restriction Tour jacket, and bring along Goretex cart gloves to keep me paws warm between shots.

+1 on the Mizuno Windlite.

I wear any type of long sleeved shirt underneath and I'm golden! I have been looking for a cold weather pant though. Now I where some type of compression legging under a pair of heavier weight sweat pants I own. It keeps me plenty warm, but not as stylish as I would like.

One of the guys I play with wears some UA Coldgear Infrared golf pants that I really like. If anyone else has experience with those or has seen any deals I would appreciate the info.

I just grabbed the Nike AeroLoft HyperAdapt crewneck during the most recent 20% off clearance promo. I find it to be very warm, comfortable, and flexible albeit a bit non-traditional. I'll still get plenty of use out of this in Boston April-May and September on.

This combo for top works well because it cuts down on friction of the layers and doesn't restrict movement.

UA cold gear (smooth surface)

Thin cashmere sweater (super light, but warmer than any wool and doesn't bulk up)

FJ sweater with buildin windbreaker (much like Windlite but warmer).

Bottom:

Depending on the temperature, ultralight base layer and Nike Weatherized pants 2.0.

Smartwool socks

Pair of hand warmers in the pockets.

If it's super cold:

Mittens

Cart cover

Cart heater

  • 3 years later...

I have been looking through all the comments and want to give cold weather golf more a shot. Live upstate NY, so will be cold, 20-30 degrees sometimes. How is this setup.
I plan to walk while playing

Under armour infrared (winter/insulated pants)

under armour base layer 3.0

knit winter hat

under armour neck gaiter/warmer

Top:

under armour base layer 4.0

or Footjoy bass layer

then footjoy thermal mid layer

on top Ping Norse SL2 sleeveless.

will use cart mittens or may buy QB pouch, but may use push cart so pouch might not be worth it then.

will use hand warmers.

anything else? Will I be warm

enough?

If you are walking you may get too warm.

Layers you can put on, and, take off to regulate warmth is really helpful. A hydrophobic base layer (I prefer thinner) is very important, if you sweat. I usually carry a light weight, breathable windbreaker for situations, when it is windy but, I am sweating. I use Clicgear cart mitts with my pushcart, and, they really help to keep my hands warm. ymmv

I use a few, light layers topped off with a heated vest. I start with a thin thermal base layer, usually a short sleeve shirt over that, a thin but warm 1/4 zip then finish with the vest. It seems the less covering I have for my arms the better I am able  to swing and the light layers aren't too restrictive in regard to my core.

First and foremost, WALK.

Beyond that, differentiate between days when the wind is double digits and days when it's relatively calm.

Get some good base layer stuff, whether it's UA or something else, and get a fleece vest; REI and Columbia make great ones.  If you have on a good thermal base layer, with a golf shirt, a fleece vest, and a wind shirt, and you're walking, they'll close the course before you get too cold.  If the wind isn't blowing, you can ditch the windshirt and the vest, and wear a good fleece as your top layer.  For the base layer, get two or three different levels; there is a BIG difference between 35 and 45 degrees.

Two ways to go with pants; you can get a good pair of long johns to wear under regular pants, or you can get fleece lined pants.  I wore long johns for a long time, but I came across some Eddie Bauer lined pants which are also stop the wind, and like that a lot better.

Smart Wool socks or the Costco Kirkland version for your feet.  If it's cold enough to need gloves, one option is to get a glove for your other hand that just like your regular golf glove; thinner and better to play with than winter golf gloves, though not necessarily very warm.

If you do walk, invest heavily in Hot Hands or a similar product.  I push my Clicgear all winter with the mitts that attach to the handle.  On a cold day, I'll have a Hot Hands in each mitt; on a REALLY cold day, I'll have one in each mitt, and another in each pants pocket for while I'm standing around on the green.

I am a fan of Patagonia’s down sweaters. They are wind proof and will shed a light rain for a little bit.  The fabric is smooth and slides so your swing is pretty much un-hindered.  For the really cold days add a light fleece under it and be happy.

A good hat is important, keep your head warm.

Just got back into the game after a 10-year hiatus. So just recently bought a bunch of new gear for the upcoming winter. I'm in Germany so the fall and winter in my area is mostly cold, rainy days with some windy days. It was important to get a windbreaker. I got the Galvin Green Archie jacket which is goretex so it covers the rain and/or windy days. I have a bunch of base layers from Icebreaker which I swear by.

Two weeks ago it was about 45 degrees with some light rain and wind on the first tee box and warmed up to about mid 50s by the end of the round and I was toasty the entire time with an Icebreaker baselayer tshirt, an Icebreaker pullover hoodie and the rain jacket. I also had a beanie and a pair of Foot Joy wintersof gloves that I took on and off as needed.
