Best Over Looked Irons

Recommended Posts

Tourstage 701CB. Endo forged, with a magnesium insert (for softer feel?), low/no offset, tremendous irons. They should stay in my bag, but...

I live in Japan. There are so many golf shops. I basically hunt for old Miura forged and other classics...

Dunlop DP201, they`ve got nickel under the chrome like the TN87 - The two iron is one of my favorite clubs to hit. The entire DP line is beautiful, especially the earlier DP30 (Aussie Blade).

Of the Miura family, i never hear anyone talk about the CB1007. The size is very similar to Taylormade`s old Firesole forged, but the cavity is like the Titleist 990, only they feel so much better.

Love the Precepts posted earlier too. So many great clubs, so little time.

Seems the more time that passes, the better these TM SLDR irons look!...

A great performing TM 'distance' iron that doesn't have those troublesome 'face slots', and an iron that plays like a GI iron, while having a better player's iron look! (Note the clubhead size comparison with the 2014 Tour Preferred MC iron in the 2nd pic below). Clearly these are some great 'tweener' irons that only now seem to be getting the recognition they deserve!...

(Several new steel-shafted sets on ebay are currently BIN listed for over $1,000.00)...WOW!.. :swoon:

Stenson Legacy Blacks

Hard to find, but anyone who has played them likes em.

Ole Stenson has gone thru 4 sets. He gets anything he wants for free but sticks with the Legacy Black's.

He seems to hit the odd iron pretty well. lol

Got me a set on order, going to find out for myself.

Just surprised more people haven't jumped on the Stenson bandwagon.

Colin Montgomery recently switched from Callaway Razr XF's to the Legacy Black's.

WE got one jumper. 2 if u count my sorry a-s. lol

Where can you order those?

Ebay appears to be a good place to look. I'm even seeing a LH iron set.

He said he ORDERED some so I am guessing new? No new ones on eBay

Sorry for the miss information. I bought some off ebay, i have purchased numerous clubs and have them mailed to a USA shipping address. I pick up whatever i have ordered during the winter in the spring. I have since picked up my Stenson's and am very pleased. Best set of irons iv'e ever purchased and they are priced very well. Best kept secret out there.

I thought some of the Nike stuff was a lot better than people gave them credit for, specifically the VR Split Cavity, VR Pro blades, and the VR Pro Combos.

MacGregor V-Foil 1025 (Cs or Ms). The Cs are my main irons - have been for some time. They are simply the best irons ever made, period.

I will second your motion. I am currently using the 1025CM's…6-PW,and love love LOVE them.

Hitting my irons is pure joy, and having command of the ball is just confidence inspiring.

I love the stock steel stiff ("Pro Pel?) shafts. A number of people blasted those shafts on here in one of the threads on the V-Foils. I used 845s forever and never had as much command with them as I did with my 1025Cs. They are perfection in every way.

Mine have factory Royal Precision Rifle 6.0 shafts in them, which happen to be my all time favorite iron shaft. Heavy, smooth, and give me a nice medium trajectory. I have no idea what shafts I will go to if I ever buy a new set of irons.

Love my irons…I keep thinking I may snag another set in decent shape and just save the heads for later.

I got a "set" (4 through 8) of Cs from Play It Again for $24.95 a number of years back and have them in the closet. I will probably put those heads in my shafts if/when they wear out - but mine don't seem to be wearing out much if any at all. I guess I don't play enough to get those bloody rust spots on the faces you see on so many Mizuno MP irons.

Cleveland 588TT irons...One of the last they made before quietly winding down. Face forged, nice trajectory thinking of buying a used set as a back up.

I'll throw in my super new guy status, and vote Cleveland, but even earlier than the 588, the CG2's I have in my bag (hand-me-downs from my younger brother) are awesome. Even the pro fitter I just visited two weeks ago was ogling them as soon as I walked in the door. Fantastic feel, workable, and just demanding enough to really tell you when you did it wrong.

He fully endorsed them as a "I might not ever need to buy irons in my lifetime" set.

Nike Covert Forged 2. Don't think I can justify anything throwing them out of the bag. They feel, look, and sound great.

Here's a few...

All Wilson Staff irons

Nike Vapor Pro Combo

MacGregor VIP Combo

All Cobra forged irons

Agree with W/S, but their forgings only. I played the Ci9s for a while but just couldn't hit them well. Now I have been playing the Tour Blades (FG 17 reissue) for 5 years, best irons I have ever hit, and that includes Mac MT Pro Ms and VIPs, RAM FXs, and TA 845s.

As for the Mac VIPs, I don't think they were underrated, they were widely acclaimed (and still are).
