Maltby vs big name companies

Yeah, those are great pics, looking to see if anyone has compared to ping line.

I just moved my I e1's and kept the mmb's. Pings felt a little clunky compared to the mmb's. Obviously, my opinion.

I’m thinking dbm vs mmb but can’t decide.

The only reason I would suggest the MMB, is if you think you'd benefit from the higher COG (sweetspot)

I also like the loft capping of the mmb, similar to when I had ping S56’s

Loft gapping? Are you referring to the MMB's working the lofts from a 47* Pw? The Maltby TE, which is the same design as the DBM, but in chrome instead of dark, works from a 47* Pw. All these designs are easy to adjust the lofts to customize whatever we want

What kind of shafts do you have on them?

I just rebuilt them this past weekend with C-Taper 120s.3454fd06cdf5f70fb1f1e92d9c3c62f3.jpgc158299144a469077d8e8fa6722f2483.jpg

Now that is just a dang sexy club right thur!. now maybe you can answer me a question.. now I know that this question/topic is very subjective to each person't preference but I'm going to pull the trigger on the DBM's in the next month or so. I've been playing around with some of the shaft options at the local PGATSS on the cobra Forged Tour and CB's. These are the clubs that I found were pretty close in spec to the DBM's in weight, loft and lie angle. I was finding that the lighter shafts (90-100g) were yielding the best results for me. 7 iron was carrying 180 yds straight and very consistent (surprising being that my GI 7 carries about 175). the heavier shafts didn't necessarily give worse results but i just liked the feel and flight of the lighter shaft as there was more feeling in the club head and I have a fairly smooth tempo. This might just be where personal preference part comes in but what do you think about the 120g shaft pairing with the DBM's? is that lighter or heavier than what you had before? I know that swing tempo, desired trajectory and spin can also be an influence as well. I'm looking for a mid/high trajectory. I may just go ahead and order a built 7 iron with the TT XP95's to see how it performs. any input is greatly appreciated. Thx

As you can probably gather, 99.9% of the posts here are pro-Maltby. To help broaden that topic a little further, pro-component (not clone) companies. For the past 4 years I've played a brand called Gigagolf (yes it's a quirky name). Like Maltby, they offer a full range of Ultra GI through MB forged clubs, along with a variety of shaft and grip configurations, Drivers, Fairway woods, Hybrids, Wedges, Putters, etc. They also include a semi-custom fitting experience just like Maltby and others. I played t6heir TRX irons for 2 seasons and then took a dive into their single length TRX offering for a couple of seasons. I couldn't have been happier with the quality and playability of the clubs for the level of golf that I was playing. Now here's the biggest positive.. In a world of a 38 year old father of 2, golf is not a very affordable interest and spending close to $1000+ on a new set of clubs was crazy talk, and if somehow I were able to purchase said set, that would pretty much blow my golf budget for the next 3 years and I'd be stuck swinging $1000 golf clubs around my back yard with a frowny face. Golf had suddenly become more affordable for me. I could afford to buy new clubs and play/practice more and my game has improved substantially because of that. Through my obsessive research, it appears that Maltby has quite a larger selection of “better player” forged clubs and they're proprietary, with exceptional craftsmanship and looks. I’m going to pull the trigger on the DBM’s in the next month or so and can hardly sleep at night. With my Gigagolf experience, I’ve gotten past that initial concern of not buying name brand and know that smaller companies like this can offer great products at an outstanding value and there is no hesitation. Now to address any concerns about resale.. I think this is a bogus conclusion. I’m a mortgage Underwriter so of course, my brain thinks in terms of percentages, compensating and risk factors, etc.. I just can’t help it. I paid $175 for my original set of Gigagolf TRX’s and sold them 2 years later for $100. Put them up on good ol craigslist and had them sold within a week. At that $100, an individual isn’t buying the brand at all but an opportunity to play or learn to play golf with a nice looking 2 year old set of clubs. My current set of single length TRX’s I paid $190 for and already have a buyer for $100. That means I lost 45% from the original purchase price through resale. If you quantify 2 years of substantial use as an additional 25% against the loss, I really only lost 20% on the whole deal. Now look at the guy selling his 2 year old $1000 set of irons for $350.. who took the bigger bath here? I’m looking to pay around $390 all in for my new set of Maltby’s. If I use them for 2-3 years and sell them for $200, I’m still way ahead of the guy with the big box set.. AND I can continue to afford to golf and improve my game, and satisfy my need to try new things. I know this post was kind of all over the place but hopefully it was some sort of help.

Agreed. I bought the DBMs 4 - GW, the 56 and 60 MG Tour grind for €485. That includes ±€140 of shipping and tax and VAT and what have you. Can not possibly find a better deal. Even if I sell them for €150 I've only lost about 330 or so.

Not really sure how you are saving money. The forged irons are about $300, plus grips, plus shafts, etc. I purchased a like new set of Callaway Steelhead XR Pro 5-AW for $448 (+ free shipping) from Callaway Pre-owned and they came with plastic on the heads. And when it was all said and done, with trade-ins, I got the irons for free.

I mean I have tried Maltby stuff in the past, and its quality, but are you really saving any more money vs. buying pre-owned, or new with discounts, etc when new stuff comes out?

It's all personal preference, but there are simply too many deals, coupons, etc. where you can literally buy the latest equipment for next to nothing.

One buy a clubpak (4 thru gap)from GW with different shafts, length and lies for much less $448.

I've only gamed them with 120 gram shafts. C-Taper and PX LZ 6.0. Felt great in both those combos. I do have a set of graphite Project X 6.0 90 gram shafts I'm going to try this Spring with them, but that's a couple months away.

Maltby makes great clubs.

My best playing set of irons are my TE Forged irons.

But for the guys that use marketing to move the ball down the fairway and not a good club keep buying the major OEM’s….Those guys are counting on your money to pay the Tour players🤣🤣🤣

I have a full set of maltby irons...no issues with them at all. Great clubs for me....others who see them like the look of them but have no idea what Maltby is. I have spent more on clubs and not gotten the results I get from these irons. The finish on the faces might not be as good as some other brands...although our range balls are bad enough to scratch the heck out of any club face. glad to hear some others play Maltby.

Speaking of finish....I was looking at my TSW wedges the other day. I got these maybe middle of last year (I think)? No significant wear anywhere on the head. Nothing on the sole at all.

Same here.  Mine look like I have had them a week, not over a year.    Saving to get the same lofts in the new finish for my other bag of clubs.

Old thread but maybe still some Maltby players following.

I just purchased the TSW DRM 54 and 58 wedges; they are awesome!  Built with UST RV2 Gold 115 R flex shafts and 52 gram Golf Pride grip on the 54 and a 66 gram mid-grip on the 58.  Built to 36" playing length the SW on the 54 came out to D3.2 and the 58 is D3.8. The different grips are to help me determine if I want to stay with standard grips or move to a mid size on my next set of irons which I'm planning to be the Maltby Forged DBM's.

I'd venture to say there isn't a wedge available from the big OEM's that is any better.   These TSW's are spot on for my game in head shape & looks, feel on a well struck hit and playability under many different conditions and lies.  Made a jump straight from the Nike Engage to these, no honeymoon required.
