Rants and Raves...

Well,I definitely do not get a h@rd on watching mens' golf these days, the LPGA however is a different proposition and I can become far more interested because their skill levels are now extremely high, their game is much closer to the one I think I have and they are so much more pleasant to watch because they look like individuals rather than wearing the Nike corporate uniform.

Golf has been bifurcated since professionals decided to play to their own rules, let them play on their own courses built for modern play and a halt to the ruination of classic courses,I have just resigned from a club over that same issue, fairways 12 paces wide, fringes all scalped to the very edge and greens shaved in an effort to reach 12 on the stimp for what?

To make it more challenging for cat.1 golfers who total about a dozen.

We are fortunate in the UK that so many classic courses are owned by private clubs who understand their heritage and their responsibility to maintain it and have no interest in ruining their courses.

Very well said! Sums up my feelings on the subject to a tee. The few PGA events I watch are at venues that I find aesthetically appealing -- Pebble Beach, Riviera, Augusta, Harbor Town.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Yeah I absolutely hate it when they "redesign" and ruin classic courses especially Donald Ross ones here in the states. Ross courses are dear and near to me because i grew up on those type courses.

“Scalping the collar and fringes” must be in vogue now. Have seen that a couple of times this year, along with an unnatural bevel to provide a rapid entry into a forced collection area. Some of the superintendents are on independent operations. They watch way too much TV golf, see something unique to a particular course and then add it, with more than a grain of salt to the one under their charge. Perhaps to give themselves the illusion of being, hip, mod, in the know, on the cutting edge, cosmopolitan even, geez.

Grow the grass, cut the grass, remove the debris, and make sure the drainage is up to snuff. It ain’t rocket science, until they continue tinkering...

This is what I like about the course I work at: no funny business, just consistently great conditions. Mind you, it probably helps that the superintendent is also the owner so Jeff isn't going to deliberately do things that compromise the long term health of the turf just to increase the challenge factor. A well designed and maintained course should be challenging enough for the customer base.

I almost cried when I saw what they did to Pinehurst Number 2. It looked rough and unkempt and I would not entertain the asked green fee.

I am not a fan of the vanity green fee either. But they did take old photos and consult them and basically restored it to the original Ross design. Personally I like playing nice courses but do not mind the goat ranch types as long as I am not being charged premium price. Yesterday was a good example. We played an older course here called Possum Trot. I played that course back when I was 15 years old and on and off all my life. It was not in the best of shape yesterday but not goat track status either. It being an old layout it did not have much Touron trade. Only $30 for 18 and a riding cart. Well worth it for me and not having to put up with the Tourons. Was not hardly anyone there, We played and it was CPO and we still played in 3.5 hours. But with that being said with hardly any players and the combination of being an older course is how long it will survive?

Local range losing a customer.....I was in our local off course range yesterday. I have spent thousands in there over the years and also put a lot of business their way.....until yesterday...

I asked if they were going to get the latest Srixon gear in...785s getting fantastic reviews in the UK....the response....no we don't stock that "s&*t and don't bother bringing it to trade if you buy one somewhere else......

Thank you and goodnight...my 2019 irons and other gear will be from a company that values customer loyalty.

Sounds like there maybe a history between the range owner and the Srixon distributor...

At the very least you probably weren't the first person to ask to warrant such a response.

Tossers!

Then at some point down the road they'll be sitting there with their thumbs up their arses wondering why it's so quiet.

That said, when it comes to ranges the owners don't want 'proper' golfers who might take half an hour to hit 20 balls if they warm up and are working on something, they much prefer the wham, bang buy another bucket crew, the ones who hit the stanchions and dividers and yell to their mates how good the shot was

Funnily enough they sell Srixon balls and stock Cleveland wedges......

Too bad, they should never show their attitude in front of the customer. Especially you had shown interests in the gear.

I would go back there with a bag of shinning Srixon golf clubs, just because.

Well that doesn't make any sense at all! Who made the comment? Owner or just a disgruntled employee?

Golf Pride has apparently discontinued (again) the Victory line of grips. I have a small stash of the version with cork embedded in the rubber but would like to get the cords as well. I put all the cords I had purchased on my Hogan woods and have been re-gripping the Macs with the other kind.

What other period correct grips are out there?

Not everyone's cup of tee, but Avon Chamois - if you like them - appear to last forever and never go slick or hard.

I have a set of these on some PB Citation laminates that I picked up. Had every intention of replacing them with Perma Wraps, but after playing a couple of rounds with the Chamois decided that they were just fine as is. Hard to beat for the price!

I tend to recycle grips a lot by shifting from a temporarily idle set to something more in vogue and Chamois are a bit of a pain because of the internal ribbing structur.

It's hard to get them off as clean internally as a Lamkin or Tour Velvet.

Perma Wrap Classic also have that look of beaded leather grips, very distinctive and pleasantly retro.

Out of curiosity, how are you removing non-wrap grips and keeping them fit for re-use?

I use a hook type utility blade in a retractable blade type handle to "rip" them and peel them off from the head end of the grip to the butt end. Scrape off the old tape and use solvent to get the last of the sticky off.

Exactly what did you mean by non-wrap grip and if you want to "reuse it " ?

Look up "v groove" grip remover tools. Golfworks does one, but there are others. Very effective for something so simple.

A rubber slide on grip like a tour velvet or victory style grip. See below concerning re-using grips.

I'll have to look into the grip remover tool. I have just been cutting them off but luckily have not had to remove anything that still had life left in it.
