Goofiest, Most Delusional Golfer Played With

Recommended Posts

So last night we had our "soft" Men's Opening

New guy joined last week, he told me he was an 8. I told him he'd be an 11 or 12 in a month. He thought I was full of it but I explained our course in under-rated and all our caps are overstated

His net score was ????

Last place of 80 guys to hint

Now to be fair the course was very wet but we had ball in hand. The greens were running 12.5 and 6 pins were extremely nasty. On #10 all 4 of our pro's putted off the green

Anyways - the right guess on his NET score would impress me

You should get Viagra to sponsor your league.

I will never understand people who brag about their golf game, or anything for that matter, especially when their brags are delusional to boot.

The stories in this thread remind me of people who are pathological liars, which are a crazy breed of people. One of my roommates in college was one, and it's amazing the lies people tell for absolutely no reason.

And it is definitely odd that people will brag about their golf game being way better than it is when they're about to play - you can't really hide your game on a golf course.

I think it's pretty obvious when a good player is having a bad round - you can still tell when guys know what they're doing, vs guys who can't hit it out of their own shadow but claim to be a 2 handicap.

Knew a habitual liar in HS we called "Kodak". Back in the day, Kodak's tag line was: "America's Story Teller".

Maybe this helps speed up play. More people think they hit the ball farther than they do. I cant blame the courses for doing this. Might be some inside information about this.

I don't see how it would speed up play. Likely it is so they can post an overall yardage on the card that appears higher. In my experience it seems like the shorter courses are more likely to inflate their numbers. They seem to want to break that 6000 yard mark with their 'mens' tees.

So then I discovered GN and it's GPS function. What I found was pretty surprising. This course and its yardages were dead on. All the other courses I played were big fat liars when it came to the distances listed. So I guess it's no wonder when people overstate distances. I'm pretty long but I thought I was MUCH longer before I discovered this. Now I play with the gps function on GN every hole. It'll give me exact distance so long as I can accurately place where I am, and I totally ignore the on course yardage markings.

Another course near me I always swore measured to the back of the greens. Never had I had so many shots fly to the back or over greens. I asked the local Fred (Marshal) driving around if the marking on one par 3 was accurate. He said it is playing the yardage on the sign. I clubbed down, took a smooth swing and watched the ball fly just off the back of the green. I even went so far as to ask the pro if they measured to the back of the green which he vehemently denied. I still was not buying it and started replacing the first 4 letter of the courses name with LIE whenever I was forced into playing it.

Years later I bought a GPS which confirmed my belief. To double check I just went back to Google Earth and that par 3 plays about 15 yards shorter than they have listed. Going from the very back of the farthest tee box to the back of the green comes up within 1 yard of what they have listed. Big fat, dirty liars.

GPS has been such a godsend. Standing 290-300 yards out on a par 5 and my father in law, 3 wood in hand saying "I could maybe reach if I hit it well." Mate, you've just ripped it 185 off the tee you've got no chance. But no. He waits. Horrible slice another 150 yards and we repeat at the next shot. Been fitted for drivers and irons and is adamant the technology is wrong because there's no way his average drive is under 200 yards etc. Common quip "ha you might want to get a new battery in that thing, I've got nothing like X yards left"

At our course I've found that the tee and yardage markers are between 9 and 13 yards out. Makes a big difference to the average Joe

It has been my experience that whomever brags about money or a golf game have neither.

I have to add military service to money and golf. Anyone who likes talking about their service either did it in the States or behind a desk somewhere.

I did my military service in Hawaii. Played golf almost every day. Worked in the only air conditioned place on the base... the communications center. I still tell stories about the famous Battle of the Bunker.

Played with a guy last week who just got a free GPS app for his phone. I think he thought he drilled his drives 250-270. Asked him to measure on several holes where he striped it. He barely averaged 210. He's got a good swing and hits the ball well but this was an eye opener.

Was playing with a couple of buddies around 10 years ago. A single was behind us and asked us if he could join. The guy was dressed in old Scottish golf wear with knickers and the whole nine yards. He had ancient hickory sticks, a thick Scottish accent and really looked like Tom Morris without the beard. He told us he worked at Sears and just had surgery to un-fuse his toes. I still don't quite know what un-fusing your toes is. Anyway, he kept telling us that he had played golf for 30 years but his un-fuse toe surgery was hindering his play. He played a with us for a few holes but got frustrated with his play and left. It was bizarre and definitely a Twilight Zone moment.

Well anywho getting the topic back on track. Played with a guy who had a brand spanking new staff bag with blades and brand new woods, fella shot about a 120, played by all the rules and took all the penalties. Not sure if delusional is the right word for this guy just thought it was a little odd.

Although we do have it here in the UK I think for whatever reason, maybe your handicapping regime, this sort of delusional is more common in the US, That said anyone can have a bad round that makes them look stupid. I am erratic at best but have played between 12 and 14 handicap for years (lowest ever was 7 for a week 25 years ago before going back to 8) but various injuries can play up and make me terrible. Add in the fact that my bad shot is an unmentionable bad days are bad and could make me look delusional. That said my worst ever I definitely got away with as it was at my club of the time, in the final of a KO matchplay where I had won 5 matches to reach it. Sadly I played like a 110+ delusional 12 handicapper (which I was at the time) and lost 9&8! How I got it that far I don't know. Moral of the story is it can happen to anyone occasionally - thankfully when it happened to me the members knew better!

When im hitting the ball well i will hit it roughly 280-290m with no wind. It always suprises me when people think thats how long they hit it and see me hit one and go 'that must be at least 320...' the look on their faces when they realise im 50-60 metres past them and i tell them that one went 280 is always entertaining.

I caddied (and worked in the bag room) at a club on the Jersey Shore all through high school and college (late 80s, early 90s), so I've encountered my share of delusional golfers.

My first year caddying, I was carrying for a guy and his daughter (early college age, I believe) in the Parent/Child tournament. He was about a 30 handicap, and his daughter was probably low 20s. It was net better ball, and they were maybe -5 coming into the last hole. Certainly not a horrible round, but there was no way in hell they were going to sniff out top 3. I'd been doing a pretty good job for them, and everything seemed like it would be a perfectly forgettable loop.

We started on 11, and the 10th hole at this course is a nothing little par 4, maybe 290 from the back tees, with a green that's impossibly narrow front-to-back and ringed with bunkers, other than a 10-foot wide ramp to the right. Back in those days, if you couldn't put the ball in the front bunker from the tee, the play was to hit an iron and leave yourself a full wedge. Anything in that awkward in-between distance just wouldn't stop on the green.

The guy hit his approach shot, and for all the world, it looked like he finished short of the bunker. It being our last hole, I dropped his bag, handed him his pitching wedge (he hit all short shots with his pitching wedge) and pulled his putter.

Well, he somehow managed to roll the ball into the bunker. I was mortified of course. I knew I'd screwed up, and I offered to run back to his bag and grab his sand wedge (it was only about 100 yards away). He instantly became furious with me and announced that he'd use the club I gave him. He left his third in the bunker. Then he skulled his fourth over the green, then played bunker pong a little while before picking up. His daughter made her 5-net-4 and they finished at -5.

He berated me the entire way to the the pro shop (which I deserved). But then he announced that YOU COST US A CHANCE AT WINNING THIS TOURNAMENT. It was all I could do to keep from laughing, as I knew that the top 3 finishers in the tournament would be the three really good juniors at the club whose 18 handicap dads would make a bunch of net birdies as their sons covered them when they were out of the hole. Sure enough, -15 won the damn thing. I think -10 finished third.

Fast forward a year, and I was working in the bag room one afternoon. This guy strolls in and asks me if I wanted to take his bag and one of his guests in a one-day member-guest being held the next day. I shot the caddy master a look (he's dying laughing) and then politely declined the guy's offer. I guess he didn't remember what had happened the year before. But I still haven't forgotten.

Advance another couple years into the future, and I'm a senior in high school now. I was on the bag of one of my favorite guys in the club. Incredibly smart, really cool, and had one of the nicest looking swings you've ever seen. He looked like he should have been a 2, but he was a 12. He had very poor control of the clubface and was prone to spraying it at times. I didn't care; he was a super guy.

Well, he was on that day, and so was I. He had good control of his golf ball. I was pulling all the right clubs, I was reading putts well, and he played the front +1. His best ever. Then on 10 (that hole, again), he blocks his tee shot and puts it in about the only trouble on the hole. He's blocked out by a huge tree. He pulls out his sand wedge and asks me if I think he can get over the tree. And I tell him "I don't think you have that shot." Like most of the older caddies (especially the ones who were decent players - I was a 6 at the time), I was a real wise-a**. So he thrusts his wedge back at me and says "And I suppose you do?"

In the movie version of this story, I pull a ball out of my pocket, lay the face of the wedge wide open, and hit it over the tree. In real life, that would have been the end of my caddying career. So I told him that it doesn't matter how I'd play the shot, his best bet was to punch it low, run it up into the opening of the green, take his par and get out of there. He did this, but he was pissed.

Halfway down 11, he thanked me for talking him out of being an idiot. He leaked a little oil on the way in, but he managed to hold it together for a 74 (+3), his personal best. I got a nice tip that day.

Unless she traveled over the pacific haha

I have no clue, lol. That said be ready to run away from folk carrying torches and pitchforks. Apparently it's taboo to hit the ball a long ways on this forum. If I were you, I'd probably go back and edit my post and change all the 3's to 2's and all the 2's to 1's. If not, good luck then. As an aside, one would think that "Smiter" as a name would clue in some folk but it's apparently not easy to wrap brains around the fact that if you swing hard and make contact that the ball just might, maybe/could go a long ways. Good luck Pacific Ocean brother from a different mother. You'll probably need it! Lol!

Poster #1- I hit the ball crazy far, farther than most everybody, I am rad, look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me in every thread I post in. Some threads I will post the same thing over ,and over, and over, and over ad nauseam.

Poster #2- One post, in one thread: "I hit the ball relatively far."

I know the difference is subtle, but see if you can identify it.

Nice. Even a Neanderthal like me can pick up on the subtle subterfuge . Allow me to retort. I don't want anyone to look at me. In fact I'd prefer if they didn't. I post what I want to post when I want to post it. I don't "brag", "overstate", or other. I am not "rad". I do not care. My only issue is when folk call me a liar. So my question to you, are you calling me a liar? If so I'd prefer that you not. I haven't embellished what I've stated. Not once. Calling a man a liar is WAY worse than him being one, of which I am not. The problem is no MAN is going to take that standing down. No one, not once, has called me a liar and been right. You think you're that person? So what have I said that's a lie? Nothing. I'll back up anything I've said. I'm sorry your game is so pathetic that you feel the need to call another man a liar. I am NOT. NOT ONCE. NOT EVER. But go head and do so if you feel good about yourself. I don't boast. I don't brag. I do. So what have I said that causes you to call, another MAN, a liar? Think about your self for a long time before answering. I do NOT.

I CALL IT RIGHT HERE AND NOW. You think that I lie and that I am/or embellish a story. I don't. Come from see me in NC Ohio. I'll set that straight. You can take vids or whatever. I don't care. Someone that calls a MAN a liar are neither a man nor do they deserve to have thier opinions heard. If I'm a liar, I'll take it all back. But since I'm not, please go choke on your words and never talk to me again. Unless you want to see then I'll gladly show you.

But claiming I say "look at me, look at me???" Go stick something where the sun don't shine. You're wrong. Dead wrong. I'll be more than happy to show you the errors of your way but if not please keep your yap shut. You wouldn't say it to me in person (that's the one thing I'm sure of since even though I'm gentle I looked like Harambe) and if you would (you'd take one look and decide not to unless you're a full blown moron) you'd eat those words. Call me a liar? No sir. That's not me. Everything I've said I can do. But hide behind your keyboard and thank whatever god you have that you aren't man enough to say that to my face. You're not. So I'll let it slide. But in the future please only talk about things you know. Quilting? Sewing, etc. Maybe the man -crush thread is for you. So go ahead and start one and leave me alone. I'd issue threats at this point if that were needed. I won't.-but I'll issue challenges...

Tell me to shut up to my face. You won't. Or wouldn't. Your little pink panties would have yellow stains. I've yet to meet a human that is dumb enough to do so so go ahead and hide behind your keyboard and say something like that to a MAN. I can't state this enough. None of you'd have a problem with me if we were to meet. It's impossible to convey online but 99.9% of my posts are written with a grin on my face. This isn't one of them. Respect your teeth, boy! I'll PM meet details if you're stupid enough to want to say such a thing to a real man. You're not so stfu. Why say something to a MAN THAT YOU'D not have the courage to say? I'll say this and id say the same thing to you. Tell me to shut up and you'll eat your teeth. Bar none. No question to ask. If you're that stupid you'll have a bone snack. You wouldn't say that to me because you are an "internet tough guy" Well guess what, I'm actually one in person. So go take your sniveling self back to where you feel safe. You wouldn't tell me to shut up in person. Guaranteed. Most folk have a desire to have their teeth the next morning. So tell me where and when in NC Ohio you want to tell me that or sit down and shut up. I'll tell you that. And there's not a damn thing you'll do about it. Other than make excuses about why you won't say that to me in person. I'm bigger than you. I'm stronger than you. And I'm damn sure meaner than you. So tell me to shut up to my face. You wouldn't have one left. So you shut up. Do it know. While you can still hide. Coward.

To the other jerk who says "none of us are better off" ask yourself a simple question... Why do you read me? Most boards I've been a part of have an "ignore" user button. Since I only do the mobile, and haven't had the occasion, maybe this one doesn't. My advice is always the same. IF YOU DONT LIKE WHAT I POST, SKIP IT OR DO NOT READ! I post for my pleasure. Not yours. If you don't like what I post then please feel free to ignore. I've been the better person about ten times now when jackholes, such as you have said mean things. I'm not that person tonight. So stick a sock in it. You don't like what I post, ignore me. I've been on here more than a month. You've obviously lived and died with each post I've made. So either jump on the bandwagon or go away. I haven't been mean to a single person unprovoked. None. So why do you feel it necessary to be an a** to me? You don't like have to I say? Don't read it. Simple.

Mods: feel free to send me packing. I don't care. 90% of the people here are awesome folk. I'd break bread with them and gladly play a round. But If you do, know this. Review my posts. Yeah I'm long winded. Yeah I'm excitable. But I haven't attacked anyone that hasn't first attacked me. So if you do, I'm fine with it as long as you send the asshats that HAVE attacked me packing too. A man can only take so much. Those that provoke are way more of problem than those that vigorously defend themselves and their own. Smite me out. That's fine. But send tha asshats that have got us here packing too. If not, I won't tell you what my day job is. You'll find out soon enough.

Anyone else? 90% of you I've enjoyed being here with. I hope you with me. But for the 10% or so that make life miserable because you're big fat jerks, please join me in purgatory. Tell a man to shut up should mean you get your teeth knocked out. Especially when you are a coward and say such things only behind a keyboard. Be a man. Tell a Man that to his face. You wouldn't. The reason for that is that you are a coward. There's nothing in here that o wouldn't say to your face. You won't tell me to shut up to my face. Guaranteed. Wouldn't happen. Coward. PM where you'll tell me that to my face. Then I'll not call you that. Coward.

Or come see me. I'll back up what I say.

Dude ... SHUT UP!

Second the motion!!

All the posts saying the same thing. Over and over and over...........

Shank this! Or don't read me. Over and over again. Why folk have to be an a**, I never know. I read some drivel and I move along. Not tell them they suck. YOU DONT LIKE,?FEEL FREE TO MOVE ON. DUH.

Anyone else? I'm waiting. Tell me to shut it. Or just ignore if you don't like. That's what I (and most folk) would do.

"Shank this". Classy!

I've never said anything to you prior. If you say you can hit it far I believe you.

But quite frankly you're diffficult to ignore because you post a lot of basically the same post.

When I read a thread I usually read all the posts, not skipping any of them. So,if yours is there, I'll probably read it. And it will probably say the same thing that most of the prior ones have said.

Probably the same thing people say about me in pace of play threads.

I think it would be best if we refrain from calling others liars and cowards and just return to golf talk. If you see somebody who you think is lying just let them lie in a online forum and move on. If somebody calls you a liar just remember this a online forum and again, MOVE ON. I hate to be the guy trying to lecture people but I hate seeing this thread just turn into to bickering.

I agree. But a flat out "shut up" is hard to ignore. I don't lie. If I do it's when I tell people that my game sucks. It does at times but at times it's good. Again though a flat out "shut up" isn't easy to move on from. Especially when I know the kind of guy I am. I'm not a guy that's needed to tell shut up. That's a jerk move and I have a hard time moving past it.

shut up

Teeth?
