Ideal head weight for a putter is ???

What do you think is the ideal head weight that a putter should be, and the weight of the grip? What's the length and weight of your putter?

This is like asking how long is a piece of string.

If you look at the tour and members of your club, I would say with relatively high confidence that putter lengths range from 30" to 40". Just as well that putter headweights will vary widely too from approximately 320g-400g. Plus, I could write a detailed essay on putter grips but I won't bore you.

You have to find what works for you.

Personally, I like a putter that has a slight degree of toe hang, a head weight in the region of 355g, a standard tacky grip and a length of 34.25 inches.

On the other hand, someone else may like a putter that has a Fatso grip, 38 inches in length, face balanced with a 400g headweight.

One is not right and one is not wrong. Through trial and error, you'll find what suits you.

I would suggest spend an hour on a golf shop putting green to see what feels good and perhaps get fitted as well.

There are as many opinions on putter weights as there are putters. Heavier heads have been in fashion the last decade or so...........but I've always felt my touch was better with the lighter heads. Everyone is different.........but Karsten didn't fill the gold putter vault based on luck!

Lot's of light headed Pings won lots of tournaments..........without milled faces and high dollar head covers.

Just my opinion ..........and I'm biased because I love old Ping Ansers

I have a theory I don't really believe in, but fun to discuss anyways. I've had all kinds of putters through the years, but always come back to putters in the 330-340g category. Every now and then, I think that since all putters being made today are heavier than that, then they must be on to something and I would probably putt good with a 350+ putter myself if I just gave it a proper chance and didn't give up too early. Why would I be different from the masses? But they simply never work for me. I have two young kids and lot's of work, so I don't have too much time right now to practice, so I definitely need a putter that feels natural to me without having to keep my stroke grooved at all time. A heavier putter is simply not natural for me with distance control, both on long putts but also on short breaking putts, where speed is crucial to picking the right line. I feel like I'm just guessing how far to bring the head back in the stroke. With a lighter head, I don't even think about that, I just roll the ball to the hole.

And back to my theory I don't really believe in... A heavy head can feel nice on a short straight putt where distance control is a nonfactor. Particularly if you are wearing a jacket, odd shoes or whatever that makes you not put in your full effort of getting into a good setup position and giving it your best stroke, a heavy head just feels more stable than a lighter head, because of course they are more stable. So in a golf shop, I'm guessing a lot of people just grab a few different putters, and the heavy ones feel more stable then and there, so they buy them. Could it be that golf manufacturers know that lot's of people would have an easier time playing a lighter putter out on the course, but they simply can't sell them on an indoor putting matt? Probably not, because people on here often say they prefer a heavy head for good distance control, so I guess there really are a lot of people that like them. I just don't get how, because they are so much more difficult for me to use accurately.

^^^LOL, a theory you dont believe in....

OP- Im a heavy head putter guy. Well, if 365g-370g is what you consider heavy that is. I play my putters at 3* of loft and at 34.5" in length and 69* lie angle. No matter what putter it is, those specs must be met. I am a center shaft guy that prefers little dangle angle.

I like mine to be in the D3-D4 range, 33" - 33 1/2" length range, (the shorter shaft typically that means I have to have a heavier head, 360-380g range). Don't care about grip weights, just whatever combinations to get in that range works for me. My current putter has a 370g head, about a 110g shaft and a SS 2.0 grip at 110g. The 110g grip is only to get me in the D4 range. However it can vary from 60g to 135g. I have all of the SS weights, 25, 50 and recently a 75. Right now I have the 50, but have tested the 25. Again, I only adjust the grip to suit the SW that I desire.

But there is no ideal, to each his own.

As others have said, there is no single "ideal." 350-355g seems to be a weight favored by putter makers these days, at least for blade styles. But with a variety of shaft lengths and weights, grip sizes and weights, use of counterweighting, etc., conventions can fly out the window fast.

This isn't a great question man...its like asking "what is the best beer to drink". They are all fine...just depend what you prefer. Everyone is different.

I play mt putter at 30". If I had a 330 or 340g putter it would have no feel whatsoever.
