Some Things Wisconsin Golf

We have had to defer our trip to Wisconsin for a year and so when it does happen we are considering extending it to Michigan. The idea would be to go on from Sand Valley or Kohler up to Greywalls and then down through Michigan for another week or two of golf at places like Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs and Stoatin Brae. Is there a scenic route in that direction? Is that road from say Green Bay, North to Marquette any problem and are there any courses en route worth playing?

No problem going from Green Bay to Marquette.  Once you cross over from Wisconsin to the Upper Peninsula you MUST stop to play Timber Stone in Iron Mountain.  Great track.  (Also, the sports bar in the Pine Mountain Lodge there used to be home to the "UP Sports Hall of Fame."  Lots of pictures of Steve Mariucci and Tom Izzo, but also a surprising number of recognized names in sports history.  Cool little diversion for sports junkies.)

edit:  Apparently the HoF is still there.  As a sports fan, I really was surprised at the number of recognizable names of athletes that came from what is a relatively obscure area of the country.

https://www.pinemountainresort.com/explore/famers-restaurant/

edit 2  At risk of blowing off Wisconsin golf, there is a stay and play package at the casino where Sweetgrass is located.  the package includes rounds at Timber Stone and Greywalls.  I've not played Sweetgrass, but have played the other two.  IMO, both of those are courses you'll want to play 36 if you can.

1. So where between snow and 90*

2. walking 36 is easy there. Take a caddy if you think it will make things more enjoyable.

Excited for the season to start! Here is a good general list for course openings: https://www.wisconsin.golf/courses/2021-wisconsin-golf-course-openings-as-others-nearby-start-to-open-sentryworld-targets-aug-17/article_324a1a78-8033-11eb-9393-a7226d13e59a.html

They don't have Evergreen on there (I played Saturday) but as far as my research goes, that list is pretty accurate. Hit em straight, gents!

I think Pets and Brighton Dale in Kenosha Co. were planning to open by this weekend but hard to say now with the dusting of snow that we got.  I was going to head out and buy my county membership this afternoon.  Temps will be at or above 50 by the weekend.

Planning on trying to walk 36 at Sand Valley in early to mid-May when the rates are down, just gotta pray for decent weather there.  Drainage not an issue at least.

One lap around Erin Hills is generally enough for my old bones, but for the young studs among you Erin Hills is offering two days of unlimited play.

Ended up playing 36 at mascoutin this weekend.

Saturday ended up playing Red/white, ended up firing a 72

Sunday ending up playing white/blue (alot of steps) ended up firing a 71.

Two of my lowest rounds out there. Itching until lawsonia opens.

Greens are in awesome shape. The blue 9 specifically made it thru the winter very well.

Great....my favorite 9.

Not sure if you're being serious or not but it's by far my favorite 9 just because the variety. The red/white is great but man it is brutal if you aren't hitting driving straight and long.

For reference I don't hit it all that far but it was so far down wind on #1 on the blue I hit driver right in front of the green then proceeded to chunk a chip and 2 putt from 40 feet lol

Let me know if you ever want to meet up I'm a member out at lawsonia.

Yes, dead serious - love that 9.  It's different then the red/white, has more of an open feel on some holes.   #1 is a tough driving hole....I'm typically hitting 3 wood or 4 wood or those bunkers are getting me.  The other courses of Rick Jacobson's that I've played I really liked, Thornberry and Broadlands.  I do enjoy the Red/white too and many of Packards designs, there are so many, but the blue wins for me!

Agreed. Absolutely love the design of #2, #5 and #8 on the blue. I haven't played a much more demanding straight forward hole than #7 on the blue 9.

Love thornberry minus the first hole, they should blow that up.

Haha....I think we've commiserated about that hole before.  Don't hit driver 😉

Yes we have lol. Respectively agree to disagree. I don't like starting out hitting 3 iron, 5 iron into a par 4.

If you've ever had the luxury of playing Green Bay Country Club their starting hole is somewhat similar. Typically try to hit driver way left onto 18.

... definitely a pet peeve of mine, but....been in those damn trees on the left one too many times!  It's so narrow and requires a fade to fit it in, but if you pull it off it's a relatively easy approach!

Agreed, I've hit 3 wood a few times and if pulled off you have a sand wedge or lob wedge. You just have to be okay with possibility losing it right which there's way more room than you think.

I am curious when Whistling Straits and Sand Valley will be opening up????  Any idea about these?

It will be interesting to see if Whistling Straits waves the mandatory Caddie again in the early spring....If so I might have to take another stab at that course.....it was a tough one 🙂

FYI, if you play during twilight, you are not required to take a caddy.  I usually try to get the first of second tee time at twilight and I've finished every single time.

If you like Jacobson you should try to get out to Strawberry Creek outside Kenosha.  Private but not that hard to get on from what I’ve heard and open to reciprocal deals if a member elsewhere.

Nice.  I remember that course being mentioned before, maybe in this thread?   Also like Morningstar....tried to get down there last year but it was really difficult to get a tee time that worked.

I haven't seen the annual spring rates email from Kohler, and sent a message to them about a month ago about it and I'm pretty sure my email went straight into the trash b/c I haven't' heard back.

Must have just missed you.  I got there at ~ 3 and was smooth sailing.  Was feeling frisky and played the back 9 again for 27.  All is right with the world again.  Have you ever played the pin where it was on #8?.....I cannot ever remember it being back right!

Going down the fwy on #2 the head pro pulled up in one of their new toys to say hi and we chatted for a few minutes. That's one of the reasons why I love that place.

Haha I think I may have saw you walking down on 18 when I hopped from 10 to 14,15 etc.

There were some pins there I never saw. 5,7,8 were interesting as well as 14 and 15. Greens were slow but it was good to get out.

Maybe....I use a push cart/bright yellow/green.

Had a good look for eagle on 5 just off the back, coming right back at it.  That's a tough pin on 7, I did about as good as I could to the middle of the green just last pin high and left it short on my putt.

A bit crunchy out there and I could tell the course saw a lot of play last year with all the ball marks on the greens.  Dry as a bone out there ... Most GIR, I could not find my ball mark.  It was so much fun!

Agreed. Ended up dumping it in that bunker left on #5. Hit a ball down the left edge of the fairway on #1 and couldn't find it but played the rest even. Highlight was making a deuce on #4, pretty sure that was the first time I hit the green actually.

We'll have to meet up sometime. I'm playing out there at 10 on saturday.

Ouch....did the same #13 on my approach, 2nd snuck just into the longer stuff on the left, and I had 95 in and hit the mound back down into the left green side bunker.  Why did I go at that pin, lol.  A bird on #4 is an accomplishment!  That is the toughest hole out there IMO!

Be visiting family this weekend....so I'll get out to Glen Erin on Saturday, one of my favorite courses.  Enjoy the golf this weekend!
