From an aesthetic standpoint it looks like Callaway is trying to compete with the M!/M2 irons. I think they are all ugly.

That said, I'm obviously a huge Callaway fan and the Epic Pro irons look pretty good at address, I'm just not sure why they made the cavities look like they did. Could be a better design from an aesthetic standpoint IMO. The technology is interesting as is the weight savings so it's a great story. But I'm not sure you can justify 2x the price over the Apex CF16 for 1/2 club more distance.

 

I'm intrigued and will hit these, but not feeling the "I gotta have it" for these at the moment. I'm sure the fit and finish in person will likely be better.

These look like every Callaway cast club release of the last 10 years. Its almost insulting to put these out at $250 a club. There's a sucker born every minute.

I could see an Epic Pro 2 or 3iron as a utility iron for sure. The back doesn't bother me at all if it plays well.

Yea, but will they outperform anything at $129-$149 per club. The new epic irons look too cheap to be at the price point they are.

Top line is important to me from a visual aspect and from there it's mostly about turf interaction and feel. I can't see it with either of these (top line and sole look too thick) but I guess I need to see and hit them in person to really tell. I like the irons I currently have and if you're telling me I'm going to pay $250 per club you better be bringing something to the table that checks off every box that's important to me.

 

The pricing is getting silly with some of these offerings from our domestic suppliers. I guess we have Bob Parsons to thank for that. But at least his clubs look like something slick and they give off an aura of technology. Now, the hybrid... that looks pretty sharp and something I'd give a serious look at.

I don't understand comments like this. Really? The price tag is acceptable when it's a club with no tech in it but it comes from one particular country. Then that price is unacceptable when you actually get some tech for your money but it's made by a domestic company? This has to be purely a brand preference thing right? Like BMW vs Mercedes?

As I said when PXG came out with their ridiculously priced line of clubs. The other companies would follow suit and it could bankrupt some of them in the end. If they try jump the price of all equipment because the ceiling is that much taller now, Callaway could become like taylormade and be on the chopping block. While I'll admit there is a certain segment of the golfing population that can afford or will buy this stuff, the other 98% of us will suffer because companies like callaway will have to pay for this R&D somehow. Irons at $1600 is ridiculous. Those of us that play 1-3 times a week and 99% of it for fun can't and won't spend that kind of money.

 

No wonder people who play golf say it is an elitist sport.

 

Hasn't the golf industry seen enough carnage? Country Clubs are closing at an alarming rate or becoming public because the younger generations won't pay those crazy prices and fees to play a game that takes too long to play.

The wording of the article makes me think they are considering ending the Apex line. Not sure where the Apex are suppose to live in their line up now outside of the new MBs.

 

It almost strikes me as something from a GI improvement stance as something like Epic -> Apex CF16 -> Epic Pro -> Apex Pro

Those irons look awful, just awful. Rather play some X-12s. I can only assume the designers of the fantastic X-Forged 13s and their MBs had absolutely nothing to do with these things.

Not sure how jealousy of haters translates into this.

 

I'd say they looked at PXG and decided that they want some of that market. It may not be big, but it's higher margin.

 

This isn't Callaway's first rodeo here either. They had irons (Hawkeye, etc) that were the first to use tungsten, and they were around $1500 at the time. So it's not a new concept for them, and the comments that came out at the time were no different than they are now. 90 percent negative mostly based on price, but for the 10 percent that are intrigued, there's money to be made.

Pretty much on par with what they did years ago with the FT iron line. Likely great stuff (since nearly all current product is) but huge price point.
