Hold your hand up if you still bag a 2i.

Recommended Posts

Just curious how many of my fella Classic golfers still bag a 2 iron on a regular basis?

My bag setup is a bit strange:

"Modern Driver" (various rotating in and out of bag)

R15 3 wood set to 15*

Mizuno T-Zoid Pro II 2i at 18*

3 & 4 hyb/utility irons 2015 MP FliHi

5-PW 2007 Callaway X-Forged

Modern Wedges

People I play with look at me strange for the 2i being in the bag. I utilize it mostly for punch shots when erred drives find their way under low lying limbs. The 3 & 4 hybrids just get up to quick, even when attempting to hit punch shots.

Just wondering what 2i others play, and why...

I tend to gear up for the course I'm playing. My home track has one hole I might get the 2 iron out for. Medium length par 3 which plays long into a swirling wind.

But I have not had that in the bag for the last couple of outings. Only last year did I put my 1 iron away as I was not happy with the high launching flight, Now I carry a 4 wood which I hit can with my eyes closed.

If I am playing a classic set then it is always in the bag. The simplicity of the vintage wedge set up ("PW and SW") means 3 woods, 10 irons and a putter is still within the club limit dictated by the rules. 3-SW is 9 irons, so there is always room for a 1 or 2 iron as the extra club.

Have even been known to take a classic blade 2-iron out on a windy day as an accompaniment to a modern 4-P ensemble ...

I hit mine about 190 yards off the deck and about 200 off the tee on solid strikes. Less obviously if I don't hit the sweetspot ! Can't hit the modern "equivalents" - in general they have too much offset, are too chunky (top line etc), and too upright, and on the rare occasions that I can get my mind beyond the simple aesthetics, I find the ball flight is too high anyway :)

Almost always carry a 2 at around 20* loft - practically all my sets have had the 2 iron added when it wasn't originally part of the set. I'd drop the 3 iron before taking out the 2.

I don't actually use it for punch shots - I'd rather deloft a shorter club and hit down on it more. The 2 iron is a safety driving club which, unlike a hybrid or fw, almost never goes too far left. Fine for hitting shots into greens where the front fringe is open to a running approach. Lie has to be good, but to be honest, I think I probably save shots by clubbing down when the lie or situation is marginal for a 2 iron, compared to being tempted to take on too much with a supposedly more forgiving club.

I really don't carry mine very far...maybe 160 on a poor hit on the face. The T-Zoid really doesn't lend itself to forgiveness with the way the majority of the mass is placed in the head. I have centered a couple that ran for days, out to 220-230 after the rolling stopped. I did carry an eye2 2i for a while, and that thing had way too much offset, at a full shaft's worth. I never could seem to get the face closed with my fast tempo swing.

2 iron here. Use it off the tee mostly. Will occasionally hit it on a long par 3 or into a par 5.

All my irons are extremely weak though to remove offset, add bounce, and so I don't need to add another wedge. So my 2 iron is basically a 3.

My G15 3 iron is the same length and loft as my old Eye2 2 iron ... does that count?

For some reason two 2 irons have found there way into my bag. I currently game a set of hogan round sole 2-e, hogan 1 4 5 wood, putter, and an additional hogan apex grind 2 iron. The apex grind I can't hit straight for the life of me. Always a fade/slice. Which seems to come in handy for me since its pretty common I'm playing from the right side of the fairway. That long fade has worked for me numerous times to save me from just punching it or laying up in the middle of the fairway.

The 2 iron is my favorite club in the bag and I have one and play it in every set I own except the G10's.

I will hit it off the tee or deck either and am not afraid of hitting it with the ball above or below my feet as well.

I am convinced that the reason many people can't hit a 2 iron is because they don't believe they can.

I believe I can and so I do.

When I make a good swing I am about 180 with rollout off a tee and about 165 with rollout off the deck.

I still use a 2 iron depending on the set I'm playing. Some of my sets, I skip the 2 iron and head straight for the 1 iron; I'm doing this with my TW276 Golden Ram set, using a Vibration Matched 1 iron at 17° on top of the 21° 3 iron.

My TG-898 Ram Tour Grinds are 2-PW, the 2i at 18°.

I've been planning a reshaft of my Vibration Matched Golden Rams, setting them to 1960ish lofts (20° 2i to 52° PW).

Plenty of room for 2 irons in my world. :pimp:

The 2 iron is in my circle of friendship. That tight knit little group of 14 of your favorite pals that you hang out with for hours at a time. Can't say it's my favorite club in the bag, that's the 8 iron, but, its number two.

The numbers: tee-200+\-, deck-190+\-

I won't hit it unless I have a decent lie.

I often carry a hickory one iron (Macgregor, probably the same loft as a 2 iron) in my hickory bag for the exact same reason. I hit it off the tee on tight driving holes. Off a peg I can hit it pretty solid,190ish, and even if I don't hit it great, it's rarely out of the fairway. I almost never hit it off the ground unless it's a tight par five and again I just want to hit straight. A low wormraping runout 170 or so is a lot better than 210 in the crap.

Until 2 years ago, I could still hit a 1 iron about 228 off of the deck. But old age and worsening Arthritis decided that was a job for younger men. (Now 62, 63 in August.) I have always been a Fit-by-Feel type, and right now, an early Bobby Jones designed by J. Orlimar 2-H(S) is in my bag, along with a Hogan Radial 7 wood, Apex 4 shaft. I'm adjusting to '92 Hogan Forged irons, Apex 4, +1/2, even +3/4 to 1" on short irons due to flexibility problems. Though I wouldn't have believed it years ago, I can see a time where I'll no longer carry a 3 iron.

I carry a Callaway Big Bertha 2i. It's got a regular flex graphite shaft in it, so I can't go after it hard...I really should get it shafted with a stiffer steel shaft... anyway, I can really poke it out there with it, up around 240 with a good strike and good roll (if I can believe the yardage markers on my home course).

Another 2 iron fan here. Only added it to my bag a couple of years ago but has become one (of three) of my favorite clubs (the others being my trusted 10-iron and 6-iron; i use the 10-iron on pretty much any shot from 110 y and less (chipping depends on lie nd amount of green i got to work with, so could be anything from a 3 iron to a putter).

Best 2 iron I ever had was a Ray Cook Titanic, thinking of getting one again, hit it on a sandy lie and you can see sparks with the titanium sole!

Looked it up... Man that thing is huge!! You might as well kick the ball with your foot.

Of course Im only joking. I just have a hard time hitting large GI irons. I just cant do it.. All that extra size takes away my confidence. I think I look at it at address, and all I can think is, "Im gonna hit this fat or off center... this thing is so big I can hit it anywhere on the face." I think it's the same thought as people who rather play 430cc or less heads...with all that extra real estate on the face, you can make contact anywhere.

Where as with some of the blades I play, I look down, and I think, "Man, this thing is only a balls width wide...as long as we make contact, we are good." Which in a way is true... if you hit a shank or off the toe with a blade, you're really off at returning the club back on target.

Hacker.. you gotta swing that thing, although it's big, it's solid lightweight titanium to weight the same as a smaller steel club, and with the classic iron look it gave me a lot of confidence when I could not hit my driver. Off a tee it's an absolute pleasure and fairway as good as any club... the mid to short irons was a nightmare due to the size! Can you imagine a delicate chip shot with a pitching wedge the size of a shovel?
