Hold your hand up if you still bag a 2i.

Recommended Posts

just joined the club a couple weeks ago. after a long and winding testing aka buy&selling, i've finally set down with Miz MP-4H 18º 2i paired up with Accra Tour Z Hybrid. (assembled myself). it's serving in between 3W(14º) & Apex UT 21º (3i alt). surprisingly stable and convenient weapon. driving off the tee goes as far as the 3W in a windy day.

wait. does this kinda modern "Utility/Driving" iron count in this thread? were we talking good ol' thin 2 irons like Tiger used to hit in the Open? i've once had 2i in my old X16 Pro set, never been able to hit it like 50 yards...

No idea, but I still love the reactions I get after a surgical strike and someone asks incredulously if I just hit a 3 iron. Then I drop on them it was a 2 and they just gawk, made even better if I manage to out-drive their driver!

Carrying an old Apex II 1 iron in the bag lately. It's a great fairway finder and seems hook-proof.

I had one out on the range last Saturday that I forgot I had. I had picked it up off the pile at work and had forgotten about it. It is a Hogan Edge forged CB. It hits pretty good. The shaft is an Apex shaft but no number on it. I was hitting it off the tee about 220 quail high with my patented little baby cut. A tourist golfer asked me what I was hitting and I told him. He asked---- Why? I gave him my standard answer "Because I still CAN !!!" Then he looked in my vintage orange Power Bilt bag and saw the rusty lead taped VIPs turned around and shut up. Shot 71 with the clubs now back in my signature hit 15 GIRs never missed a fairway with the driver all day. Went back to my little stinger cut with the driver. Stopped that crap of dropping that right shoulder and teeing it high.

I used to play old Hogan irons, 2 iron loft was 20 deg. The 3 iron in my current set is 20.5 deg. Does this still qualify?...lol

Absolutely for me it does because I go by degree personally not the number on the bottom of the club. LOL I made a statement earlier on this thread about my modern Cally 3 iron I was gaming at the time but since then I went back to my old stuff

I put a 2 iron in the bag back in 92 and its not left since.

I fell out of love with my 5w at the time so picked up a Mizuno Astron Generation 2 2iron as I was using the rest of the set at the time, oh did that thing fly.

It stopped in the bag then till around 2006 (the rest of the irons got changed many a time to other Mizunos) when I picked up a set of Lynx Black Cats complete with 2 iron, Phuck me that was even longer and so forgiving.

Then that lasted just a few seasons when I went back to my first love of Mizunos, and got MP58's eyed up the 2 and 3 iron in the 2010 Fli-Hi. They still live in the bag, probably due a reshafting but oh what clubs.

Had a gentleman ask me what club I was hitting today at the range. He was very surprised when I told him it was a 2 iron.

Had a fun conversation about the fg-17 irons I was hitting.

1 or 2 iron off the tee I grip near butt end. Off the deck I grip down about 1-2".

This is the secret, and the rule of thumb I go by as well, about 1"-1.5" gripped down.

My 2 iron hit the closet about the time I turned 40. It was a Nike Pro Combo Tour. Pulled it out recently and hit one good shot out of 10. That good shot was ohhh so sweet though.

I've got 2 sets(Slazenger/Hogans and Titleist 731PM's) that have 2 irons but I've Only ever hit one of them(The 731PM), and only at the simulator. I was getting a solid 245/250y out of it that night though, its a sweet stick :)

I used to carry an old Slazenger Hogan one iron found broken in half and stuck in the mud deep in the gully down the right side of #2 at Mission Golf and Country Club just outside Vancouver. I was about 14 then and it must've been around 1994. I used it for a long long time and it developed a nice little wear mark. I used to abuse that club, and every other club I happened to carry. And its whereabouts are lost in the time fog of my teenage years.

Now, I have a little collection of two irons. BECU Eye 2 blue dot, Stainless Eye2 red dot, Dunlop DP 201 (this one's an absolute beauty with S400) and a TN87 in S200. Also have a nice little Seve Dunlop 804/999 one iron. It's got an X100. I really should bring it out next time I have a chance to get on a course by myself. Who knows when that'll be.

Three that I play regularly

KZG ZO, my gamers built by someone that knows what they're doing, 2-PW, hit the 2 240-250 depending on the day. Mishits only 210 or so but misses aren't disasters like with the hybrid that will take the 2s place depending on rough, course, weather, etc. I know the hybrid is sacrilege, but I can get the same distance with a much easier swing. The 2i is so so much more versatile and controllable, but to get it high, and really get the most out of it, it requires a lot more torque on my part, and my back is starting to get upset with me for that kind of stuff, lol. 2i makes a good replacement for the driver on windy days when I'm having trouble keeping the driver down, or just can't seem to get a repeatable shot for the day with the big dog.

MP-33s, my experimental set I'm building myself, 2-PW. Currently wearing dg s400. Sweet feeling club, and I love the look. Not as razor thin as the ZO, but that's almost a good thing, lol. Side note: they made a 1 iron for the MP-33, and if you have one, have a friend that has one, or know where there are some cold dead hands I can pry one out of, gifts of money, vehicles, anecdotes , and dancing girls are all in the realm of possibility. It's my holy Grail, please help.

Wilson Staff FG-17, my classic set. Possibly the best feeling blades I've ever hit, muirfeilds, muiras, Dunlop Aussies, MP-14, etc, don't quite do it for me like these bad boys. How far do I hit the 2i? Not as far as I hit the 1 iron ?
