Have you tried to drop fairway wood for another hybrid? How did it go?

Recommended Posts

After a lifetime of playing a 3 wood, like most do, I am considering dropping it. About 5 years ago I started with replacing my 5 wood with a 3 hybrid. Then my 4 iron with a 4 hybrid. In the past year have found myself preferring to hit my 3 hybrid over my 3 wood in almost all instances more and more often. I played a 2 day tournament this weekend and didn't hit my 3 wood once. At every shot where I could have hit either 3 wood or 3 hybrid I just felt the most confident I'd hit the hybrid well. I may have gained a few yards with the 3 wood, but being straight has it's advantages. Particularly in tournaments.

If you've made that change, what's your thoughts having some time with it?

I suspect I'd change out my 915F2 for a Ping 17 degree. Essentially playing 2 iron - PW, wedges and a driver.

I have both a 15 degree 915f and a 17 degree 816 h1. I use the f almost exclusively off a tee and the h1 from the deck.

I will hit the f from a 1st cut lie, but off a tight fairway I stick with the h1. The difference is about 6-7 yards for me. Off a tee I can get an extra bit from the f. I play 17 and 21 degree h1s, which I call 2 and 3 hybrids. Ymmv.

I just did this very thing.... I dropped my 3 wood for a 2 hybrid. It's only been one round but it did not hurt me anywhere. I have a tendency to miss my 3 wood off the heel which turns out into a short slice obviously. Even my misses with the 2 hybrid were keeping me in good parts of each hole I played it on. If a par 5 is longer than 520 I really don't stand a chance of getting on so any distance loss from a 2 hybrid isn't gonna really kill me. So far I do not miss the 3 wood, but I will keep it around just in case.

Give it a shot! If you hit your 3H really well, copy it (shaft and head style) with the 2H.

I have a 2H, but stopped playing it because I found a 3W that I hit further and higher and more consistent. I love my 3H and 4H though!

I just did the reverse. I pulled out all my hybrids and restored all my fairway woods. I'm tired of needing a change in swing for the hybrid if I want to avoid the disastrous lefts and really dislike their tendency to send the ball left. Fairways are built more neutral and give equal opportunities for disaster to the left and right. :)

One thing I like about the hybrid is the heavier weight of the head and am thinking about how that might be applied to the fairways. I'll be looking for any old utilities that used to be around in the past. Other than that, I think I'll do better with the fairway.

Same here. Had a 17* 2 hybrid (Adams LS super hybrid) which would go a mile...if I hit it. Problem was, I'd only get that clean hit maybe 40% of the time. Replaced it with a 17* 4 wood and that number has gone up to 80% and it goes the same distance on a well struck shot.

People are always banging on about removing long irons from the bag in favour of hybrids, I did something slightly different.

I was looking for a way to get a 3 iron in the bag and didn't want to take out a wedge, so i took out my 3 wood.

The 3 iron in question was an AP1, which has 19* of loft and is long (enough). The 3 wood was long on perfectly executed shots but they were rare which brought my average distance way down, the 3 iron is a way more consistent club so the average more than matches the 3 wood.

I still carry a 22* hybrid which actually has a similar length to the 3 wood but has a higher flight (wind) and the hybrid propensity for the occasional left but is much more useful from wet semi.

I don't miss the 3 wood.
