Is it just me, or is Open coverage unbearable?

One gripe I had was no on-screen graphic to tell how far the approach shot was. Sometimes the announcers would say the distance, sometimes not. Seems standard to have the yardage on the screen for any golf telecast these days.

The ratings have spoken. 2nd worse ratings in US Open history. Azinger, Buck and Faxon combined with a horribly boring venue = time for the USGA to rethink some things. I would love to know the backgrounds of the decision makers of the USGA. They clearly know very little about their respective audience. Yes, the coverage was completely unbearable.

Yeah, lots of big names were absent from the leaderboard making the casual viewers tune out. Coupled with the fact that they had a very nice streaming presence I'm not surprised ratings were lower than usual. TV ratings can go behind the shed and get ol yellered anytime now.

The coverage was fine. I'm guessing that those who found it "unbearable" were either getting a root canal at the same time, or being attacked by a pack of pit bulls.

Time to revive an old thread!  Regular commercials. “Playing through” commercials.  Sponsor announcement commercials. Feature stories.  Announcers telling war stories and talking over the action. And Azinger - sweet Jesus in heaven, Azinger. It’s enough to make a strong man cry.

It is literally worse than full commercials.  At least, in days long gone by, if something happened during commercial break, the network would show a replay.  Nope, not now if it happened during playing through. Forget that that screen is 25% normal size and there is no audio (I once heard an announcer refer the audience to a player/caddie conversation that they never heard because is was during Playing Through).

I personally think ESPN has better golf coverage then CBS,NBC, and Golf Channel. They did a great job at the PGA and SVP is the best in the business. I know they used to have the US Open and I wouldn't mind it if they showed all 4 majors.

Agree. I’m making a list of the companies that advertise during playing through. I vow to never buy anything from them !  I’d rather have full commercials. I don’t watch playing through. Full commercials i can fast forward through. Now I have to wonder what I missed on playing through.  Hate it!

There are at least 3 distinct coverage teams: early in the day with Sands as anchor, then midday with Terry Gannon anchoring, and finally the NBC main team with Hicks, Azinger, Feherty & co. I actually like the Gannon/Byrum team best although it rotates Faldo and Leonard as analysts. But they are really no worse than Azinger.

I don't know but I feel like the PGA Champ coverage on ESPN+ was far better

I must say, the early coverage is better than the late.  A lot more full shots, tee shots, seemingly less playing through and putting.

 

however, rest assured, I will begin complaining again later!

The golf's alright, but the endless adverts for erectile dysfunction treatments and the voiceover artist on the PXG adverts that we're forced to endure every ten minutes in the UK have me wanting to kick the TV screen in.
