Danny Willett worst major champion ever?

Recommended Posts

Great article on recent golf magazine or maybe it was golf digest. Reporter did an article on how Shaun Micheel is the "worst major winner" ever. Then runs into Micheel at this year's PGA. Micheel goes off on him, almost got physical. Micheel later apologizes to the reporter and they've become friends. Article brushes over the injury and health issues he's dealt with. Long story short, the major winners who have under performed career wise, have done so for very good reasons-injuries etc.

I think you could also put Andy North on this short list - who won two majors, but only one other PGA win (14 worldwide wins).

History Lesson. Many career injuries. North was a lot better player that most will give him credit for.

Absolutely. He won his US Opens back when they were a true test of golf. Even one couldn't be attributed to a fluke, two makes him a legit badass.

Possibly the luckiest? to be fair he won due to a major collapse.

If we are talking 'lucky' major winners I'd nominate Paul Lawrie. I'd go as far as to say he accidentally won it. Had he had any idea of what was about to unfold I don't think he'd have shot anywhere near the score he did.

To be fair Lawrie won a playoff, "lucky" for me are the ones like Simpson and Spieth US Opens, they won it from the locker room

Every major is won by the person who shoots the lowest score over 72 holes - I don't understand the take when people say that someone else "lost" a major and they didn't "win" it. Spieth hit one of the best fairway wood shots ever on the last hole at Chambers to apply the pressure the DJ.

From memory Willett shot the best ever final round to win the masters...the best ever!

Paul Lawrie shot 67 on a day when only one other player broke 70. If Van de Vedle makes a couple bogeys earlier in his round and misses a birdie does that make Lawrie a more "valid" winner?

You win a major over 72 holes, not just on the back 9 on sunday. Weird.

Lowest final round is 64. Willet shot 67; as did Casey and Fitzpatrick.

Absolutely, North was one of my favorite players and he's one of the best player's turned announcer. I still remember his win at Oakland Hills. That course was brutal back then.

Who cares? He won at the Masters. Still a Major Champion.

You know what they call the person who graduates worst in the class from Med School? Doctor Death.

Fixed it for you.

Fixed it wrong. The guy who finishes last often knows his limitations and works within them. Some of the top guys think they are God and take more chances.

Now I'm not, or rather haven't been a Danny Willett fan.

And you know what, he knows he has been playing rubbish and he turns up each week , believing he is in the process of turning it around. That takes guts and character, which I didn't think he had. And I respect that.

And his swing is getting smoother, the putting stroke is looking more assured, and I've got a sneaking feeling he is going to make a lot of folk eat their words.

Top ten at Augusta next April? Not as 'out of the question' as it was a year ago.

I would love to be called worst Masters Champion ever :D

Age old question....

Would you rather be the worst of the best OR the best of the worst?

I would rather have a green jacket than not :D

Edit: in other words, trolling apart, would you rather be a Willett or a Kuchar? and for me it's Willett (or Schwartzel..., you choose)
