Ping Anser : Better on Slow Greens??

Seanmx

Recommended Posts

I think that the traditional Manganese Bronze Ping Anser with the speed slot is a better option for the average golfer who tends to play on slow greens.

  • Very forgiving : The speed slot makes practically the whole face a sweet spot
  • Light Weight : Easier to release and get the ball to the hole
  • Lively face : Gets the ball to the hole

I find it very hard to get the ball to the hole with a large mallet like a Spider or 2 Ball and as a chopper I leave myself lots of long putts every round.

I also find the Scotty Cameron equivalents of the Anser are too heavy and the sweet spot is too small.

Anybody else think this?

Tried my old Ping Anser 3 last night on the putting green for fun. It didn't get the ball rolling very well as it popped it up and skipped a lot. I understand it has more loft than today's putters, but I wonder if it has gotten bent over time. It won't be in my bag anytime soon, but, with some adjusting to its loft and some lead tape I see no reason why it couldn't work.

It's a sound slot.

The old Hogan woods had the speed slot.

Might have something to do with loft, also. I know Seemore has a whole theory about loft and forward press that involved green speed and turf conditions. The old Anser was designed for old school greens. Still works today.

Dead right : The sound slot not speed slot

My only putter for the past 30 years has been a Ping Anser 3. Used it on all sorts of greens, mainly in PA, OH, NY, and now CO for the past 20 years.

It works fine everywhere I've played...from Pine Valley to simple public courses with slow fuzzy greens.

"It's the Indian, not the arrow" in my opinion. Or, to be more PC: Use what works.

I have this very same theory. The greens I play on predominately are weird. Its a public course with hard but slow greens. Very hard to putt on with the heavier modern weighted putters. I went back to my original Anser and had a lot more success with distance control. Seemed like I was leaving a lot of putts too short with the Sigma G. I can live with a foot short but 2-3' was unacceptable. Seems like it should be the complete opposite but I don't golf is funny.
