We are taking my son to a national robotics competition. We will be there the weekend after the 4th of July. I am taking my sticks. Anyone know the area for a golf course for me to play?

Public options around Fairmont are Fairmont Field Club and White Day. If you head towards Morgantown you have Lakeview Resort. About 1 hour away you have Mystic Rock at Nemicolin Woodlands and Lodestone at Wisp Resort.

If you have some connections i would recommend looking into some Private options as well.

Pikewood National: This might be a stretch, very exclusive, but truly an outstanding course and hidden gem. I honestly cannot say enough nice things about this place, IMO one of the top courses in the country. Forward Tees Play around 6,900 yards and Championship Tees are 7,600 yards 79.3 Slope and 155 Rating. If you have any chance to be able to get on, take it.

Pete Dye Golf Club is in Bridgeport and is a great course blending a couple of Pete Dye's different design styles.

The Pines Country Club is in Morgantown, Russell Reid is the pro there (stand-up guy) and they usually allow reciprocity if a call is made to them ahead of time from pros at other clubs.

Thank you very much. I will see if my pro will make a call and see about getting us on at one of the Private clubs... I would like to not have to drive very far, as I am driving 13-14 hours to just get there. I would like to be as close as I can. But I will see what I can do..

It may be only me, but there is supposed to be another dad going that I have played a good bit of golf with in the past... but he isn't sure he is going to be able to get off from work, as he started a new job a couple of months ago.

Thank you again. My head pro is hopefully going to try to get me a tee time with some members at one of these Saturday or Sunday. I really appreciate it. I am a 8 handicap, and it looks like the Pikewood is one of the hardest courses in the country... that might be, uh, fun... lol

But hopefully I can just get a chance to play.

Again, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. We are driving 14 hours to go to a Robotics competition at the small college there ( I am really tired of the robotics thing, and I am glad this is his, I think, last year) I gotta find my wife a "spa" and me a round of golf so that we don't : A) kill the kid B) kill each other . Our vacation to the Florida Keys (they have never been there) became this trip when his team won Districts and Came in 4th at State Regionals. Oh JOY!

Its for him I know, but really wanted to take them, and me to the keys.. had a house that sleeps 10 for a week to share with two other families for 700 dollars each family, during Lobster season.... would have been incredible.

Not a problem! I played Pikewood on Monday again, and it is in perfect condition. It truly is a very tough test that requires precise shot making, and coming away with pars feels like a major victory. Calling it one of the hardest courses in the country would be very accurate. The views that the course offers can't be beat as well.

I would have to say coming from a guy who used to vacation in the Keys every year for Christmas, that it is one of my favorite places to spend some time. I feel for you that you will not be able to take them there. Some of my favorite memories with my family occurred in the Keys

That being said if you are able to get out on Pikewood or Pete Dye you will not be disappointed, and the other courses are no slouch as well. Nemicolin has a great spa, a casino, and used to host the now defunct 84 Lumber PGA Event.

Let me know how everything goes!

Haven't heard from my pro. I'm in Bridgeport eating dinner and across from outback is Bridgeport cc. Looks pretty nice but can't really tell. It's been raining so everything looks so green.

Bridgeport CC isn't bad. Fun, decent track. Small greens.

The Pines up here in Morgantown (about 20-30 min away) is your best available option if not Pikewood or Pete Dye. Pikewood is near impossible to get on without a hookup and Pete Dye is somewhat exclusive as well.

You can't go wrong with the Pines though if this weather holds off for you. Doesn't look good though.

I'm playing at the pines in the morning. I am a muddier I guess. I love playing in the rain. Looks like it will clear up right about when my tee time is scheduled. I am hoping that some members will be generous enough to let me join their morning groups.

I did bring my rain gear.

Looks beautiful

Glad you were able to get out and enjoyed The Pines!

My wife and I did NOT want to even go... we bitched and moaned the ENTIRE drive there... Until about 30 miles from the West Virginia State line. then all of a sudden both of us started going, "ooh, look at that" and "omg, you see that?"

We absolutely LOVED it. we are going to go back in October, maybe just her and I and look at the leaves and stuff.. I will probably play the pines again, as I met some great people there.

This is going to be our "place" for vacations now. I am still going to need to take them to the keys, and Disney and what not, but man. The wife and I are going to have this as our personal "getaway place"

I was told that I needed to play Pikewood over and over. so, I have to ask, are you a member there? They laughed at my pro when he called...

Lots of good places to go through the fall and if you aren't limited in time you could take a pretty nice route through the mountains. Lewisburg to Snowshoe to Elkins would be a pretty fantastic drive that time of year.

I'm hoping we get a weekend to go up there mid October or something. A couple of the guys from my normal group are wanting to go spend a few days at pinehurst. We found a rental house that was like 300 a night that sleeps 12 so we may end up doing that with all the kids. Let the kids ride horses and the wives do the spa and we can play number 2 and another of the local courses.

But I really want to see the West Virginia mountains in the fall. I know snowshoe is supposed to be fantastic. We met a couple of people there in Morgantown that we want to go visit, they were pretty connected to the area and if my wife and I want to get a second home and I could set up a nice small office there it would be a great place for us in 5 years. Lots of the businesses in fairmont were in dual use buildings. So it might be a great place to have a small apartment on a second floor and a small business downstairs.

Pikewood is very difficult to get on. A call from the pro won't do it here.

You played a nice course in the Pines. Another option may have been Green Hills CC outside of Fairmont. It's nice, maybe a notch below the Pines. Field club and White Day are not worth playing. Bridgeport CC is nice and you probably can get on with a call from your pro. You have Bel Meadows outside of Clarksburg and also Stonewall Resort. Both public courses. Stonewall was top notch, but has slipped in recent years.

yeah, we kinda figured that when they laughed at him for even asking, then it was a special place. They weren't ugly or anything i don't think, they just kinda laughed when he asked... and then told said no... maybe one day I can get on. I hope to talk to Bob Friend about it one day. He is an "online buddy" and is from the area and was once connected to the place.

I really am hoping to get back up there very soon. met some pretty cool people and we really liked it.
