9W...What to Expect?

I would expect to have to alert air traffic control every time I plan to hit it...

That's why you do not go with the stock shaft, which is typically 54g or so, unless you need that launch. Go with something heavier, slightly higher kick, slightly lower torque - that usually follows with the slightly heavier shaft (all dependent on you and preference) - and a shorter length shaft.

I am thinking that new Steelhead XR may be the ultimate 9 wood - look at that rounded sole - great for rough and bunkers, as well as ummm ... the fairway.

Exactly what I did with my 7w, cut it down to 41.5" threw in a L/L 80g shaft and it is by far the easiest to hit 3i of all time.

What is "L/L"?

Expect a lot of ribbing from playing partners who still bag 2-irons

That's guaranteed. People can't even keep a straight face when I just mention that I'm going to try a 9 wood.

Think about the guys with an 11 Wood.

This is my first post and have been reading on this forum for quite some time but I can relate to the original post.

I am one of the guys with an 11 wood ... and a 13 wood too. I do get a lot of comments about all the headcovers in the bag but all of that comes to an end when they see me hit these woods. For some reason, I just have a huge problem with irons so I carry 8-SW and the rest are woods of some type. I live in Raleigh and my club just recently changed the greens which are now much faster than before so the par 3's required a high shot in order to keep it on the green and the 9-11-13 woods do just that.

Now, I'm every bit of a club Ho as anyone else here and I have spent more money than I care to think searching for the right bow and arrow, forgetting the Indian has far more to do with it. But, I have found a degree of success with these higher lofted woods that I just cannot achieve with the corresponding irons, that is until I can learn to hit the irons with similar results, but that's a whole different story.

I have tried everything and the 9 wood has been great for me as well as the 11 and 13.

Stay brave!

Curious what model of 11 and 13 you've come across. Are there many options these days?

For you guys, or gals, who use nothing but high lofted clubs down to 6 iron or so, what do you do when you need to punch the ball low out of the trees or under a tree branch? I like carrying a 4 iron just for these shots, or shots into a stiff breeze.

The last few rounds I have played I have carried a 9 wood and a 4 iron, both fill about the same gap.

I have no problem keeping a 6 iron down. Imagine a long flat spot through impact.

Classic!

I may get a 9, only because I just don't like low lofted hybrids. But would like one at 40 inches or a bit less with a 65g shaft.

Last year, my good friend & I had our butts handed to us by an older gentleman who's bag was essentially all fairway woods, a few Ping G5 irons, and then wedges/putter. His bag was filled with headcovers and he hit probably the straightest ball I've ever seen. Bag what lets you shoot good scores, period.

It's not in my signature at the moment, but I've had a lot of success punching with my 18* Mizuno TZoid Fli-Hi. I've actually had a couple shots from the fairway where I've chosen to fade it to back right pins with a 2/3 swing from 170ish out.

When Mr. 18* is not in the bag a hooded 5 iron usually does it, but if it's a left to right shot I have to dramatically change my stance and cut across the ball. Never had much success trying to punch with a hybrid.

I'm in the same boat. I've got a 9 and 11 wood (in addition to 3, 5 and 7 woods). They just work for me. I've got stiff shafts on both of them. Ball flight wise, I would say that the 9 is just slightly higher than the 7 (which is to be expected). As with you...result wise...I find these to be great at holding greens and far more consistent than irons (I'm sure that's a "YMMV" thing though).

Where the vast majority of people have never seen a 9 wood ball flight, much less hit one themselves...people that don't have anything positive to say about them don't know what they're missing. To me...catching the "WTFM8?" look on peoples faces as you step to the tee box on an executive course (and stick the green) is almost as amusing as actually hitting with the clubs.

I have several 11 woods of different generations, the one currently is the XR. The 13 woods are the oldie but goldies back with the Ely wood, the 13 did not have a name associated with it and the head had the dark gray glossy finish.

I'd potentially game a 9w, but I feel like my SS would just end up sending the ball up to the moon. My 4h already goes pretty high and I can't imagine even more height. Sure maybe it would be slightly more forgiving and easier to hit, but it wouldn't do as well out of the longer grass which is where I tend to use the hybrid from the most.

  • 2 weeks later...

I carry driver and 3 fw all GBB , 3 , Heavenwood and divine 9. Ditched hybrids and 5 iron. Heavenwood 165-185 , 9wood 155-175 . Carry 6-pw (44 degree) and 4 wedges. Can alter distance on the fairways by choking down a couple inches. Both fly high and straight for me. No more left or low right from hybrids and rough is not a problem for either the Heavenwood or the nine wood. Very versatile clubs. Very happy with their performance. YMMV

I am wondering what brand can you get a 9, 11, or 13 in? Also I need left hand. Or where to buy?

Callaway has been making 9 and sometimes 11 woods for years but I just checked their pre-owned site and it seems they mostly made them right handed only. The 2015 Great Big Bertha line of fairways was offered in all lofts for lefties, so you might want to look at those if you can find them. Also, Epic and the Ping G400 line have a lefty 9 wood. These high lofted woods are hard enough to find for righties, so I feel your pain.
