Just drink Gatorade. No need for Electroylyte tablets. Or add a pinch of salt to your sports drink.

Wife had me try some nuun tablets one day, tasted like drinking dissolved plain Rolaids or something. I should probably try some different flavors. I drink a decent amount of water every day at work 64-96 ounces then usually another 30oz before bed. On the golf course I have a 24oz hydroflask that Ill start with full zero calorie vitamin water then switch to regular water once that is run out. Sometimes Gatorade G2 or Powerade 0.

Lol yeah nuun is gross, frankly they're all pretty gross I just kind of hold my nose and chug it down.

I really think the clif bloks work...some are made for electrolyte deficiency...cramping and such. I don't want sugar either but I read where long distance runners will eat gummy bears or flat coke to prevent the "bonk"...hitting a wall.

Gatorade is chock full of sugar though.

I agree with the sugar comment. I drink Nuun and actually like the Pink Lemonade flavor. In terms of the cost, it is cheaper than buying a gatorade on the course, easy to throw in a bottle of water. I keep them in my bag all the time. I think the key is drinking them before you feel that you need them.

I spoke to a heart surgeon at my course and he said that water is not good to drink without something to keep it from washing out the electrolytes from your system.

He recommended eating saltine crackers or pretzels when water is the only available drink.

He also recommended drinking a sports drink the night before and the morning of a round in higher temps/humidity. If you wait until you need the electrolytes, it's too late.

I use BioSteel powder. It's the only electrolyte drink that dissolves completely, doesn't give me heart burn or a have a weird after taste. The packets are perfect to slip on the golf bag without taking up too much room.

I agree with this... In the middle of a round 2 weeks ago I got sick, had been drinking lots of bottled water lately, etc. anyway was weak during the round, got shaky, even vision went weird, and nauseous and threw up... ended up in the ER. I had an EKG, a CT scan, the usual blood work and stuff. The result was low sodium in the blood. I had been washing it out with the filtered bottled water. Oh I had kept very hydrated, but no or very little sodium intake, few minerals, no electrolytes. Had an IV of sodium, they said go back to tap water for some minerals (ugh) and vitamins, and get something with electrolytes (some mentioned above) they said Gatorade, or Smartwater, or sports drinks when I play, start keeping up the sodium intake. I've since learned how many bad things can happen to you with low sodium- research the internet. Be careful if you think bottled water is good for you in hot weather or anytime without the addition of salt, electrolytes, and other minerals.

Also my wife runs marathons, and prepares well for them meaning prepares... So a marathon yeah you need to recover too, but for golfers, recovery products mean what? If you're doing it in advance to keep problems away, very good, if taking them after the fact, then they were already needed, which was what got me in trouble.

There's nothing wrong with drinking plain bottled water in normal conditions. But if you're out in extreme heat or doing exercise/sweating a lot then remineralising the water is a good thing. A little pinch of Himalayan salt is good for that. I also add a magnesium liquid (ReMag) in every bottle of water.

Also, drinking too much is bad too - I'd be wary of drinking more than 4 litres per day. If the heat is that extreme, then you should consider getting out of it - would you try to stick out freezing cold temperatures too?

Saltsticks.

http://saltstick.com

I have been using these for the past few years since moving to Texas, really work well for me. I used to get terrible cramps when it got over 90 and I tried to walk 18, I swear once it felt like my whole body was seizing up.

I still sweat like crazy but with enough water and these I almost never cramp up.

Nuun or Coconut water, and a banana. Occasionally a sports drink if I have none of the former. I train martial arts outdoors in the tropics, so have both a good heat tolerance and an understanding of what to take to survive.
