Allen Doyle... what was his game like?

I remember watching him play and thinking that the game looked really easy when your backswing never gets past your knees and you work your way around the course with a bunch of low, sling draws. I went to the course hell-bent on copying that move and ball flight. Lasted about 5 swings. His swing was unorthodox, but he looked to me like he always flushed it.

Would be interested to know..was he a shotmaker or someone who just hit it straight and plotted his way round? Anyone play with him?

could out play anyone.

when he won an amatuer event, 13 shots or so before Tiger, eldrick said he had no idea how that guy could do that.

Knows the secret to the golf swing to own it.

Tough, tough competitor. Maybe to the extreme as he had more than one run in with the Georgia State Golf Association over his behavior while winning six State Amateur Championships in a 13-year period from 1978 to 1990. But the man can flat play.

Care to elaborate?

I don't remember the details beyond grumblings from some GSGA officials when he became pretty demonstrative over a bad shot or bad break during a State Am. Not sure if there was a club thrown or simply abusive (though loud) language towards himself. I remember reading a newspaper account that indicated some unnamed GSGA officials were pushing to suspend him for a year from GSGA competition. Don't think anything further ever came of it.

Have to remember he was an outsider who settled in Georgia after military service & was dominating the state amateur competitions & that may have had something to do with the grumbling as well. Probably should have kept my mouth shut since I've never actually met him.

Didn't he develop that short, flat swing practicing in a basement? Seems to me that I read that somewhere.

Think I read that somewhere too. He was born in Rhode Island & grew up in Massachusetts as a hockey player so that probably contributed to his swing as well.

Would love to see some good slow motion video of his swing - pretty cool action.

Meanwhile there's a bunch of guys out there with swings that pretty much look the same who can't break 85, go figure lol.

That is because he knew how to play his game or golf his ball as the old timers used to say---- As they say now he plays golf not golf swing

I play with Allen about 4 days a week. He still shoots his age pretty regularly (67?) I believe.

He plays against a round Robin of teams out of the group (best ball) which is usually a fivesome and the big group skins.

I would think the only thing that stops him from being in competition is his length off the tee....probably 250-260 on avg with a few bombs on the right holes...but you can count on everyone being a draw down the right side and being dead center pretty much like clockwork. One of the best wedge players I've ever seen.

Have played before with Allen, very accurate and one of best short iron and wedge players I have ever seen. In addition to this, man has zero artifice and class for days in manner he appears to treat all he encounters.

I got to play with Mr. Doyle way back in the Kroger Classic days at TPC Rivers Bend. He was my Pro in the Pro Am they hosted for Juniors. I knew nothing about him but my dad was real excited that I got to play with him. I remember on the first tee seeing him swing and thought "how does this guy break 80?" And then proceeded to watch him carve out a 31 or 32 on the front 9. He hit a low draw pretty much on every shot and putted like a maniac. I also remember his putter being an old rusted heel shafted putter like an 8802. He was super nice and so was his caddie.

The following year I played with Miller Barber.

Mackepa,

Seem to recall him using an old Tad Moore blade putter when played with him to great effect. Also recall Mr. Moore making mention of him in Classics section of site.

Played with him at the Southeastern Am when I was still in school. As others have said, bullets all day long. Enjoyed the opportunity to meet him then and later enjoyed watching his success on the senior circuit. He was a straight up competitor who knew how to win.
