Broke 100 again!

May not be much for some, but for me it was a victory. Shot a 98 today.

Played really well off the tees, and chipping/pitching was really locked in - the new Cleveland wedges have really given me more confidence in that area.

The greens were freshly aerated, so that threw off my putting for sure, but nonetheless!!!

Anyway, just thought I'd share. It's my best score I've ever recorded, second time breaking 100.

Congrats! Breaking 100 is all about fundamentals. Breaking 90 is mental. The equipment is a small part of scoring goals but it's fun trying to find the holy grails we all look for.

Out of curiosity, what is breaking 80 about? Asking because that's my current goal but I'm struggling to get close.

To the OP, congrats! Always a good milestone/good excuse to reward yourself.

Congratulations! Hopefully breaking 90 won't take too long. I found that once I got below 100 I pretty much never went above it again. Breaking 90 hasn't quite been like that. I've been hovering between 85 and 95 for a year now. But after a slump earlier this year things are coming good and I credit that with two things:

* Finally going back to a coach and allowing them to rebuild my swing.

* Taking approaches more seriously. Getting close to the green is no longer good enough. I want to be on the green.

The rebuilt swing has helped by giving me more distance on my wedges. Instead of having to approach with longer irons or hybrids I'm now able to approach with 8, 9 or even PW. Those clubs give better accuracy and my confidence has vastly increased.

I'd have got below 80 last Saturday except I got tired/stupid on the 18th and cost myself two shots. Still - 81 ain't bad and it didn't actually feel that difficult. Sub-80 suddenly seems possible :)

100% agree. When I broke 100 I then shot under my HCP next 8 rounds coming within 1 or 2 strokes of breaking 90. When I broke 90 it was purely down to course management and only playing a shot I knew I could hit.

Might be a push to go from 100 to breaking 80 this season but if I can shoot mid 80s consistently I'll be happy. See what happens.

Breaking 80 is about improving all aspects of the game. I know I'll need to gain a few yards off the tee, flush my irons every time AND make another 2-3 12 footers per round.

Time it takes time and patience.

Not losing balls of the tee

Making putts

Not flubbing chips/iron shots.

All of these still happen to 70s, 80s, etc but less frequent.

Practice with a purpose and work on your weakness but don't forget everything else.

Congrats!

For me breaking 100 came pretty quickly, 90 soon after but braking 80 took some work. I even broke 70 a few times but for me took a lot of work and divine inspiration.

Now if only I could get back to breaking 80 I would be in heaven. Right now I am just breaking bad. :)

Congrats! Keep it going....try to limit your big numbers and you will never see 100 again.

This is great advice. Big numbers kill your score. Learn to keep your tee ball in play and keep working on the short game.

Think of it this way. Get your tee shot in a manageable spot. Your approach somewhere close to the green. Then with a decent chip giving yourself a chance for par ,you will make a few and miss a few. Shooting in the 80's and 90's becomes very realistic.

I see a lot of newbies wasting strokes batting the ball back and forth around the green and 3 or 4 jacking. The great thing is you can generally practice the short game for free at most public courses. It's how I learned to play during college when I didn't have much money.

Just play for 1 over green in reg, 2 putt everything is a 90.

I'm a casual golfer. That has always been my mindset. It takes the pressure off. Allowing that extra shot on every hole worked for me. Use course management and stay away from the blow up holes. Throw in some pars and or birdies and now you have a round in the 80's.

Congrats!!! Now golfing becomes more fun when your shooting under 100. Keep grinding.

Biggest ways to break 90's now...

1. Lessons

2. Prevent double chips

3 Avoid Penalties

4. Avoid 3 putts

Go Luck

For me consistently breaking 100 was:

1. avoid penalties

2. avoid 3 putts

3. course management (no hero shots, just get it back in play)

4. stay in the moment

For me breaking 90 was:

1. reduce double bogey's

2. avoid penalties

3. avoid 3 putts

4. course management (no hero shots, just get it back in play)

Haven't broke 80 yet. but I've been close with a 81 and 82

congrats to OP. it's a thrill when you're jus starting out and start to see that consistency leading to lower score and know you're doing SOMETHING right!

Course management and "yardage golf".

Ultimately, this is what helped me crack into a single digit handicapper years ago.

Ex: 360 yard par 4

I asked myself, why hit driver here when I need 210 yards to reach the 150 yard marker.

Percentages say I can hit a 4 iron in play more than a driver. (Of course this was when I was a ~10hcp)

So I started hitting clubs to reach a distance to green #. Then all I had was the desired yardage left to the green (pw-9-8i etc).

Once I started managing the golf course better, my scores drastically dropped. You know the saying "It's not how you drive, but how you arrive". After a year or so of learning how to master this technique, I started getting more aggressive in spots.

Now I'm a ~1hcp and STILL play to these principles for the most part. You should try to implement "yardage golf". Having gps watch helped me a ton to get overall #'s.
