Starting on Monday, July 17, the LPGA Tour will enforce a dress code policy that cracks down on athletic wear. In an email directly to Tour players on July 2, LPGA Player President Vicki Goetze-Ackerman outlined a list of items that will no longer be allowed. The email was marked as "important" and had a subject line that read, "Updated Policy to begin in Toledo." Here's the new dress code as it appeared in the email:

  • Racerback with a mock or regular collar are allowed (no collar = no
    racerback)
  • Plunging necklines are NOT allowed.
  • Leggings, unless under a skort or shorts, are NOT allowed
  • Length of skirt, skort, and shorts MUST be long enough to not see your bottom area (even if covered by under shorts) at any time, standing or bent over.
  • Appropriate attire should be worn to pro-am parties. You should be dressing yourself to present a professional image. Unless otherwise told “no,” golf clothes are acceptable. Dressy jeans are allowed, but cut-offs or jeans with holes are NOT allowed.
  • Workout gear and jeans (all colors) NOT allowed inside the ropes
  • Joggers are NOT allowed

The harsh language here -- capitalization of every NOT; dated phrases like "plunging necklines" and "bottom area" -- begs the question: Who on the LPGA Tour began dressing offensive enough to drive the implementation of this new policy?

Goetze-Ackerman went on to explain that it's an LPGA Tour player's "job" to notify her clothing sponsors of this new policy, and that "penalties for violating the dress code will be a $1,000 and it will double with each offense."

When we asked the LPGA to comment, Heather Daly-Donofrio, the tour's chief communications and tour operations officer, offered the following statement: "The dress code requires players to present themselves in a professional manner to reflect a positive image for the game. While we typically evaluate our policies at the end of the year, based on input from our players, we recently made some minor adjustments to the policy to address some changing fashion trends. The specifics of the policy have been shared directly with the members."

In an era when Instagram "golf babes" are dressing more provocative than ever and consequently attracting more attention and sponsorships than many professional golfers do, perhaps the LPGA Tour is trying to set an entirely different tone in an effort to command respect and separate itself as a highly different, more professional product. Even so, why take away a golfer's freedom to feel like an athlete in joggers? Or leggings? Or racerback tops? These pieces of clothing can look highly polished when worn correctly, so why not encourage a more professional look instead of banning such pieces altogether?

Earlier this year, we commended the LPGA Tour for modernizing what qualifies as appropriate golf apparel. We used Michelle Wie as an example of a golfer who looks more like an athlete than most golfers ever have, and we applauded the LPGA Tour for allowing that. Wie had been wearing collarless, sleeveless racerback tops almost exclusively all year, and why is there anything wrong with that?

Lately, however, Wie has been wearing sun sleeves to cover up her arms, most likely in an effort to appease those who are offended by her bare shoulders. And going forward, she and her LPGA Tour colleagues might have to be careful about the length of their skirts should they want to avoid those significant fines.

its due, so the new president wont be grabbing the female PXXXX by accident.

Personally think golf associations goes to far the same way wimbledon in tennis does to inforce white clothing.

Yeah, waaaay too far at Wimbledon. I mean, with the shortage of white clothing out there, and with some of the lower-ranked players maybe having to purchase tennis clothing with their own money, it's shameful. And that's to say nothing of the fact that it would be really hard to see the players in a blizzard.

Clearly pointed at Michelle Wie and Symetra Tour. Noticed already that Lexi is going to longer sleeved polos with long shirt bottoms.. almost like what she wore when she was 13. Boy can someone get poor Gerina Piller a clothing sponsor. Maybe she is color blind. The poor lady seems to only have black shorts and blue tops.. Would like to see a requirement for the larger ladies to have their shirts tucked in.

Paige Spiranac is not happy with the new Dress Code...

https://www.yahoo.co...-212200610.html

:taunt:

Wow shocking she doesn't like it. Could it be because the rule basically was written for the exact outfits she profited from on instagram?

As someone with a newborn daughter, who I hope enjoys golf with me someday, I applaud the LPGA. You can be athletic and proud of your body without showing tons of skin. I want my daughter to know this to her core.

How many guys are following "Golf Babes" or "Women with Drive" because they have nice golf swings? It's not empowering to dress sl***y and throw it all over the internet since your talent isn't enough to get you to where you want to be. I don't think the LPGA is filled with women like this but I do think they are getting ahead of it because the mini tours and Symmetra are full of it.

I'm amazed at how many people either can't read or don't. From the posters here and on a Women With Drive Instagram post I don't get it. All the comments on "I'll still where skorts", they didn't say no skorts.

Reading comprehension just fails many people or they just want to complain. 98% of the outfits worn in a tournament fall completely under the new guidelines. Heck even Michelle's athletic racerback shirts would be acceptable if they had a collar, which Lexi wears quite often. Many of the girls complaining are women who this will never have an effect on. Which Instagram pro will play on the LPGA? Most can't even qualify for the Symetra tour.

I don't think anyone really cares what the ladies wear while playing golf, I'm not watching LPGA golf for the sexy outfits. I am curious what and who is the driving force behind the new dress code. Who pushed for the change, members of the tour, sponsors or Mike Davis and why? Seems such a change warrants some transparency as to the reasoning behind it.

Probably a combination of sponsors and players. I heard them say on one of the recent telecasts that Stacy Lewis was one of the players that said something because a sponsor had said to her, What's up with so and so's outift?

Agreed. It seems there are more than a few fellows who love the slutty look, however, or we wouldn't have a thread here featuring mostly Korean golfers dressed in a fashion designed to appeal to those who like the "little girl" look.

Very well said. its a symptom of generation kardashian. my 8 year old niece asked my sister (her mom) verbatim. whos kim kardashian? she answers somebody whos popular on the internet. little one follows up with why? my sister mumbles its a long story.

well mommy is she a singer? no

is she an actress? no

is she an athlete like an olympian gold medal winner? no

is she a princess? no

then why is she popular mommy? i dont know finish your smoothy

2 weeks later at a barbecue and my niece comes up to me and says guess what? i say what? she says im gonna be a youtube and instagram star. It was jarring. My poor sister rolled her eyes in despair. this is where we are as a society. little girls arent allowed to be little girls...

Congratulations on your new baby.

Unfortunately it's the sign of the times. Sex has invaded even the formerly conservative arena of the Classical arts. As a longtime arts patron, I have witnessed some sexy things in recent years (including a NC-13 "Salome" in L.A. last year), of which the following are just a sample --

"No plunging necklines" = Paige Spiranac...if she ever makes it

She won't.

I read Paige's write up on it.. I actually agreed with her how unfair it is that she could be fined for wearing the exact shirt as someone else but get pinged due to the size of her chest. Yeah she could wearing something else, but if that's what she's comfortable in. A happy meium must (and will be) found

Agreed though that she's so far away from the tour it's almost not worth mentioning (I'm trying to say that without being dismissive and derisive)

Why do some of the LPGA players wear lots of eye makeup (lash, liner, shadow, brow, etc.) as if they are attending a Sports Illustrated swimsuit photo shoot, or going out clubbing with friends? Could it be because they want to look attractive and alluring? If so, to whom do they want to look desirable?

Well, offhand I'd say

1) She's at least 1 step above you on the "ladder".

and

b) it could actually affect HER.

There is no winning for people who are tasked with making these rules. If you don't do something, everyone starts pushing the envelope and the organization becomes a joke, and if you do, then people complain about equity and intrusion.

I have to do this all the time in my school with students and new staff. The worst is explaining to parents why their teenage daughter can't wear some skimpy little dress they spent $100 bucks on for her birthday. The fact remains that in professional settings, you don't show off knees, feet, bra straps, edges of underwear or side-boob, and you don't wear clothes thin enough to expose any of that either. Guys need to clean up the boy beards, take the hats off, pull the pants back up, and not get too overly casual either. I hate policing this kind of thing, but there are people who can't take the hint or figure things out for themselves anymore.

Likewise, there are situations where there are some types of clothes that work for some body types and are an embarrassment for others. I don't split hairs over this, because I don't want to see guts falling out from under T-shirts, or rear-end cleavage either. Never fun conversations, but it is what it is. Better to learn it from me than from social media posts.

It's in the interest of "growing the game" and appealing to the younger generation to get into golf ....... seems to me a thinly veiled puritanical lashing out by the powers that be, who are all probably over the age of 50 ... what or who is this in reaction to? that'd be interesting to know .. there's been nothing in the public domain..

Hey...I'm well over 50 and approve of the current rules for LPGA fashion.

I don't think Spirinac is in any danger of ever getting fined for a dress code violation on the LPGA Tour.

Spiranac is complaining bc it's easier for her to be half naked on Insta to get exemptions than it is to put in hard work to make a tour.

This makes 0% sense. She's one of the people who purely benefit from a very lax LPGA dress code. Why the heck would she be the one to want it to be more strict?

...what ? Reread. my point was she's complaing b/c she wants a less strict code...b/c it's easier for her to dress like she's searchin for D-D-Defense than it is to put in the hard work to make birdies. she's the kardashian of the golf world - somehow her looks are all she's worth.
