So last week I broke 100 for just the second time...

Today, I shot a 91! I'm really pleased with today's round. I had a 15-20 yard chip in for birdie, 3 pars, and a total of 30 putts (1.67 putts/hole).

My only gripe is with hole #18 (par 5)... I carded a quadruple bogey. It really is crazy to know I could have broke 90 today, so I can't really beat myself up about it.

I guess now is a good time to give an update about my recent 6h acquisition - it rocked. I can't believe it was that easy to hit. Don't see that being replaced any time soon.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

That's AWESOME !!! What was different in this round than your previous 100+ rounds?

I can't really narrow it down to a single thing, but it's been me putting a couple of things in the works. Specifically...

1) Technique - I've really tried to keep my head steady in the backswing, and my hands a little bit lower in the setup by putting the club more in the base of the fingers of my left hand.

2) Putting/Chipping - I think I finally have the perfect grip for my putter. I was using the Superstroke fatso 5.0, and I had no feel from anywhere. The mid-slim 3.0 I have now is just money. Also, my new Cleveland wedges are just giving me so much confidence.

3) Mentality - I card all my scores after each hole, but I never add them all up until I'm in my car at the end of the round. Takes the pressure off, allows me to stay loose.

4) Course management - I've tried to play smarter. For me GIR is huge. Just making sure I'm lining up on the right side of the tee box, aiming left-ish, and taking the right side of the fairway/OB right out of the equation has done me wonders. That combined with my new range finder could be the most beneficial aspect of my recent improvements.

Sounds like a lot of things, but really it's been pretty natural. Just took me a while to figure it all out.

Yep, all those things make a world of difference. I've been breaking 90 consistently, up to a couple of weeks ago, been shooting in the high 90s/low 100s. I developed a case of the shanks all of a sudden. Last week I started out on the range and the shanks showed up and carried over to the first few holes. That's when I decided, the hell with the irons, I'm going to hit my hybrids. 130 yard approach, hybrid - 165, hybrid. Ended the round shooting 86. What really helped the score was my wedges and 28 putts. Used my Scotty 33/350 Mil Spec with a SS 1.0 mid and that thing was money. I'm going to try your #1 technique above, see if I can get rid of the shanks, that and trying to stand closer, see if it makes a difference.

thanks for posting and hang in there, improvement is bound to happen, just remember, course management and short game are your keys.

It's helped me out immensely. For whatever reason, just getting the club a little lower in my left hand has put me on a better plane and allows me to rotate through and turn my right hand over the left a lot easier on the follow through.

I hope it helps!

From the sounds of things you have the game to easily break 90 regularly, you just need to eliminate the big numbers by managing your game better. I speak about this from personal experience. Focus and course management is key to better scores. Play the percentages, aim away from trouble, and most importantly take your medicine when you hit a bad shot. I see so many high caps compound a bad shot by going for a miracle recovery shot that puts them in more trouble. Getting your ball in play is the number 1 priority after an errant drive, even if that means hacking out sideways to the fairway.

This is very true. Keeping yourself out of trouble is key. In fact, on the 9 I carded on hole #18, I basically did the opposite. My first tee shot went OB. Tee'd up a 3W and striped it down the fairway. On my 4th stroke, I decided to opt for the aggressive play and use the 3W again on a slanted lie to carry a water hazard. DUMB - It went way left and nearly went OB again. Put me in a really bad spot for my 5th stroke - no shot at putting it on the green (of course, 3 putting didn't help either).

Should have went with my gut and played a hybrid into the adjacent fairway and kept myself out of trouble, in play, and with a chance of getting on the green to make a putt for bogey.

Course management is key. Basically for my game, the safer play is usually the better play - words of a true amateur. Haha.
