Spieth for both. PGA Championship seems to be an "easier" (as if any major or tournament for that matter is easy) tournament to win than the Masters. Concerning number of majors, Spieth's swing is far less violent and will probably promote a longer more injury free career.

ย

I share this opinion, I think the Masters is the more difficult major to win year in and year out. I think Jordan's slam will come soon, and I think Rory's will be much later, if at all. I don't see a fire in Rory to get it done. If I was his age and had his money, I'd likely be the same way, so no finger pointing.

Spieth, in four weeks time.

For some reason only known to the Supreme Being he doesn't lose a ball if he drives it 150 yards offline.

Rory on the other hand....

Not only the lost ball on 15 on Sunday, but also the perfect drive that bounced into a fairway bunker in an earlier round, and then, when all he did was chip out sideways, it took a weird bounce again and ended up on the edge of the bunker in a near impossible lie.

It's just destiny.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Here's how I think they compare;

ย

Driver: Rory

Woods: Rory

Irons: Push

Wedges: Spieth

Putter: Spieth

ย

Mental Toughness: Spieth

ย

Rory needs to win the Masters and Jordan has to win the PGA, overall I'd say the odds are in Rory's favor since the Masters is a much smaller field.

Everyone who thinks that Rory has fallen off since his majors I think are selling him short. Jordan Spieth wasn't #1 player back then. Dustin Johnson wasn't a #1 player back then. Jason Day wasn't a #1 player back then. Not to mention all the new young studs that have been competing the last two years. Rory didn't fall off, the competition just got much better. Rory is just as great as he has ever been.

I don't think so.

He has become even more inconsistent. This Open showed this perfectly. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde all the way round.

I don't think the chip out from the fairway bunker was any sort of weird bounce or bad luck. I think it was a lazy, unfocused shot. He could have blasted the ball 20 or 30 yards further and still have been in the fairway.

This is a fun discussion. I'm leaning towards Jordan on completing the career slam first. It might not be this year bc Rors has a better record at Quail Hollow. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Rory doesn't win at Augusta in his career. I do think he'll hoist the Claret Jug and Wanamaker a couple of more times. But I think the Masters for Rory will be like Phil with the US Open.

ย

Jordan basically willed his way to a Claret Jug today. The last time I saw something like this was Tiger at Torrey.

McIlroy and Spieth are two different type of swingers of the golf club. McIlroy seems to rely on power with a fluid loose swing with lots of power from the ground up, and Spieth has a tighter (wrist-free) controlled swing with a lot of arm speed. Spieth's iron game is really good, but his driver is not reliable day in and day out it seems. Because of a weak left hand grip on the driver Spieth is subject to hitting blocks. McIlroy is subject to wildness in both directions, but mostly to the left. It is when they get around the green that Spieth is so much better. Spieth has a lot of the same player qualities as Woods. He's not reliable with the driver, but he could recover from anywhere. And like Tiger, when he needs to make a putt, Spieth does. When McIlroy is on, he is untouchable, but his "on button" occurs too seldom. In the final round of the Open Championship, Spieth showed he can win without his A game.

ย

All things being equal I pick Spieth to win more majors than McIlroy and he will be the first to have all four. I like Spieth's chances at the PGA Championship.

The PGA field is tougher to beat than the Masters. The Masters is tougher to get in, but that isn't an issue for these guys.

I agree Rory plays Quail well, but they have made some changes to the course and Spieth has played it only once and that was in 2013, when he was 19ish, didn't even have his card at that point. Quail has an Augusta like feel, and Spieth has proven he can play and win on any course. Not sure that I would give Rory the advantage at the PGA this year especially with Jordan's confidence on the rise with two recent wins, one of which was obviously a major.

All of the people bashing Rory's putting ability and his game's suitability for Augusta, you know that he's been top 10 there each of the last four years, right? I think Sergio proved this year that you can win The Masters being a superior ball striker and having a good putting week.

ย

Regardless, I think Jordan picks it up first. Wouldn't be surprised if he goes out and wins the PGA in a few weeks.

Rory had a free pass to play whatever equipment he wanted and choose to take money from Taylormade. He cares more about money than winning.

Correct. With the exception of the driver/3-wood, there is no WAY the TM stuff is better than what he was playing in January........Sorry, it just isn't! Money won that race........

Phil's been 2nd about 100 times in a US Open. Do top 10's at Augusta get you the jacket now?

The conventional wisdom is that McIlroy is an unbelievable driver of the ball and that driving is a huge asset of his game. This is obviously true to an extent. He can blooter the ball a long way off the tee and in 2016 he was 1st in strokes gained driving.

ย

However his driver does seem to get him in trouble an awful lot and, unlike Spieth, who is also wild off the tee, he doesn't have a short game that can bail him out anywhere near as often.
