What about the new GI iron from taylormade that was referenced in probably half of the YouTube reviews? Think it's a forged GI? Maybe same idea as p790 just bigger? P790xf?

probably an M1 irons with speed foam added.

Not the same measurement as the TM irons. Good comparison of each 0311 series irons to each other though.

My 0311T appears to be about 77mm blade length.

My 0311X about 81MM

I hit the 790 yesterday, similar to Pxg 0311T in terms of feel. Only took around 10 swings, and it was a little short for me. I need a little longer shaft length.

I noticed that the 5 iron is 37.75". I play my PXG at 38.25" or + 1/2".

Taylormade indicated that they will use lighter heads to get the correct swingweight for + 1/2"+ shaft lengths.

Figured it would have a similar feel to the PXG irons.

This is the first iteration by TM of this type construction (P790 very similar to PXG 0311 series irons). PXG has four models with the same construction (0311, 0311T, 0311XF, 0311X) so will TM move in this direction with additional models or is it one size its all? Not talking about the dis-similar constructed 770, 750 or 730 models just the P790.

Very interesting.

I disagree. The P series are Players Irons. They also need a Game Improvement Iron. I for one am not good enough to play any of the P series Irons.

According to True Temper's site the stock shaft is a DG 105 not the XP 105. Will this shaft have the same launch/spin characteristics of the heavier DG?

.

No specs on the shaft yet but performance seems closer to the XP, mid launch. No chance this is a low launch offering.

Here are profile graphs for new shafts. Looks just like original DG but obviously lighter.

Thanks, I'm not bright enough to understand that graph; I'll stand-by for TT to publish the info; I'm going to check these out at a local fitting event on 9/9.

i thought that shaft launched the ball higher, when I hit the club the other day.

People are finding the P790's are by design quite high launching. The high launch, high ball flight with low(ish) spin and high landing angle are all done to get the ball to stop on the greens. This is how manufacturers are building clubs to compliment the new golf ball designs like the TP5 balls etc.

Michael Newton golf:

Perhaps the higher ball flight in these is due to the DG 105 shaft.

Club speed: 91.3; ball: 126

Loft: 30.5

LA: 17.5

Efficiency: 1.38

7 iron - 5700 spin

Distance: 179

Peak Height: 35

7 iron, PXG 0311XF data by Newton:

Club speed: 94.4; ball: 128

Loft: 30

LA: 16.3

Efficiency: 1.36

Spin: 6355

Distance: 180

Peak Height: 35

Now lets check the PXG 0311T players model from Newton:

Club speed: 91.2; ball: 124

Loft: 32

LA: 17.6

Efficiency: 1.36

Spin: 7270

Distance: 170

Peak Height: 35

Rick Shiels golf: P790 7 iron........similar numbers as Newton golf:

Higher club speed with the XF (both XF and T are 37"; P790 is 36.75") may be due to the length being 1/4" longer than the P790.

Note: P790 and 0311T both at about the same club speed at 91.2 with P790 getting 126 ball speed; T getting 124 ball speed.

All achieve the same peak height but the XF was spinning at 6400, while the P790 was spinning at 5700 and the T seeing 7300!

If you want more distance then less spin is the club to look at.

I haven't owned a Taylormade in a very long time (Because of performance and other reasons) but I'm really excited to try this whole lineup. I haven't been able to hit any of them yet but if I was only able to select a few clubs to try these would definitely be on the list.

For those who have hit the P790, what clubs would you compare to the club head size? Places around me won't have the demos until the end of this week

My eye saw a Callaway Apex CF16 that went on a minor diet. Slightly slimmer topline, slightly smaller overall size, slightly less offset.

I only looked at the long irons though.

I think it's been said but these are basically a much less expensive yet better looking competitor to PXG. I thought the RSi and PSi were pretty mediocre, apart from the forged irons in the sets, so if these are all forged and that SpeedFoam does what it's supposed to do then sign me up.

My only complain, if you want to call it that, is the lofts between these and the P770's. I'd love to do a combo set but I feel like because these launch higher with lower spin taking loft off these to align more closely with the P770 wouldn't play as well. I think it'd have to be a custom fit to do something like that. Regardless, I think TM sells a crap ton of these once they hit the market.

Also love the DG105 shaft option. Very excited to see how that performs.

Also from Taylormade website, (doesn't say how many irons), but these are cheaper than I expected them to be...

Hit the 7 on flightscope. Nice soft feel. Look great at address. 30.5 degree 7 iron so was expecting around 180 ish carry but stepped on a few that carried 193-195 average was 184. Taylormade has a great new line of irons. Minus the m2 m1

People are finding the P790's are by design quite high launching. The high launch, high ball flight with low(ish) spin and high landing angle are all done to get the ball to stop on the greens. This is how manufacturers are building clubs to compliment the new golf ball designs like the TP5 balls etc.

This is not entirely accurate. No real players irons use this design. This is how manufacturers are building GI distance irons but this design philosophy does not apply to all irons.

Game improvement irons are designed with a low center of gravity to help high handicappers get the ball airborne. This low center of gravity causes high launch and reduces spin. To keep them from launching too high the lofts are strengthened further reducing spin. This combination of strong lofts, high launch, and low spin creates more distance which is what most high hc's want in an iron. The steep descent angle is a function of the peak height. If spin was more traditional on these irons the landing angle would actually be too steep and you would lose distance.

The point is this design is used to create easy launch and more distance, it is not a new standard because the golf ball changed 15 years ago. You are not going to see TM staffers like DJ and Rory switching to a full bag of P790's. Maybe in 2i, but they will stick with their blades and Jason Day will keep the 750's.

If you want more distance then less spin is the club to look at.

I would take the higher spin iron all day, I don't need the extra distance and more spin gives more control, for me anyway. The 0311T is basically the perfect iron other than looks and price. Feel and performance are perfect for me though.

Also, I still hate the name. Anything with the late 90's "Xtreme" descriptor as part of the name just makes me feel sad inside. Like I am embarrassed for Bob Parsons because the fact that he though that would be a cool name proves how lame and out of touch he is.

I imagine in their adds someone hits the driver, eats a Dorito, chugs a Mountain Dew, shouts "XTREME!!" while raising the roof, then jumps in the golf cart and drifts it around a corner.
