The online reviewers are generally showing about 5500 - 5600 spin for the 7i (a 30.5 degree club). They call that "low spin" for a 7 iron. However, that's probably about the same spin as their gamer 30 degree irons (most likely their 6 iron).

 

So P790 30.5* club @ 5600 = low spin

gamer forged player's 30* club @ 5600 = good spin

 

whatever........

 

It's because the # on the bottom says 7 rather than 6.

In the P790 vs M1 review the two irons looked almost the same size. Hopefully it was just the angle, he never did a side by side at address.

Was at my local golf store yesterday, and was able to give these irons a try. Honestly they were quite underwhelming and safe to say I will not be buying into the hype. They do look good, however, no substantial changes that warrant purchase.

When can you preorder, sept 01 or 15? Try a lot of irons out there but kept coming back to my Stenson Callaway Legacy Black, this might be the irons that will replace the LB. Thanks

True, you may not gain 15 yards, but I would imagine the feel is much better on the 790s than the hard as a rock M1s though. And the looks are definitely better.

I'm thinking that if the look and feel are there and performance is close, much of the spin or launch related issues can be tweaked with changes to shaft, loft, or even the ball. Many more variables to work with here. I'll reserve judgement until I hit them myself, which I plan to do.

The pxg would have probably been a couple yards longer if he didn't fat a shot with it. Ball speed and smash would have probably been a little more heavily in favor of the PXG as well. Still, very similar performance at vastly different price points.

The PXG for the 0311t data is shown in post #291 from a different time. More spin, same height, 3/4 club shorter. As expected since the 0311t is not a distance iron.

I finally got to see th p790 in person today, did not get to hit it though. The P790 is a little smaller than the M1. And as expected a little bigger than the P770. Not much in it as a youtuber would say.

Just going to leave this here. Trackman data from the kingdom on the WRX trip I am lucky enough to be on. Current irons are apex pro's bent 1 degree strong with tour issue x100. Fit into the p790 with Modus 130X. The clubs were built for us right after the fitting and we got them tonight. The Apex Pro irons come in around 1/4" longer (again my fitting). Ask any questions you guys have or visit the live thread from the kingdom.

Think of the PXG 0311T high spin tour model.

The P790 is built with very similar tech...some might say its a copycat.

 

Now make the PXG 0311T larger...no LARGER....XTRA LARGE.......BINGO...... A high spin, forgiving iron with consistency.

I had a chance to hit the P790 7 iron yesterday with the stock DG 105 shaft (a little light for me).

 

Compared to my P770s (with Modus 3 120s), on average, I gained 3 mph ball speed and 10 yards carry with the same swing speed and same height. Spin is about 750 rpm lower. Launch angle was less than a 1* difference. The feel is great. I'm going to try a couple of different shafts, but I'm leaning toward getting the 790s. They are very good.

What do you think of like a 5-7 790 8-PW 770 set? I feel like I am to the point where I can solidly strike my 8 and lower, every now and then a 7i gets miss hit and I certainly can still miss hit 6 and 5i. However, I hate the look of a shovel in my hand after I experimented with MP54's. I think the 5 and 6 sometimes were a litttllleeeeee small looking, but something throws me off about wielding a tiny back-hoe in my hands with these Rballz irons.

Stopped by my local shop to try out the 790 7 iron. Was anxious to see a forged thin face players like performance club. Very nice shape and finish. Much bigger with a very thick top line (not evident in photos). Tried with several steel and graphite shafts. What a disappointment, odd sound at impact, dead feeling, good distance but not great. Just to make sure it wasn't me I went and got a set of M1s and a PXG (of all things). Yes I will say it the PXGs were night and day better feeling at impact as were the M1s. Both better distance wise (although nothing remarkable). I need to reserve final judgement until a demo set is available that doesn't have that awful heavy looking hosel attachment arrangement. Dang it was looking for a new set of irons to play around with..Was hoping by being forged they would have more feel than the Epic Pros. Not only is that not true but they appear very large compared to the Epic Pros. I knew it wasn't going to work for me when the PXGs were much better feeling. Don't know if it is the difference between speed foam and TPE, but if it is TPE wins hands down.. Spin was considerably lower (500+) than the M1s, PXGs, Epic Pros which seemed to not be desirable.

Debating if I should wait for a 2 UDI or just order a stronger / longer 3 iron. TM can bend it stronger, downside is bounce changes, but that doesn't bother me on that long of a club, and may change the offset a tad.
