Taylormade P790 Irons

Recommended Posts

Here are some pics of the Taylormade P line of irons. From left to right: 750, 770, 790.

The 750 is more blade like than the other two and has a shorter heel to toe measurement.

I know there is a 20 mm difference in the 770 and 790, but they look remarkably close to my eye. The 790 appears to be a more rounded 770. The 770 is a bit boxy on the top line.

The pics may appear to exaggerate the size of the 790, but to my eye, it's closer to the 770 than the difference between the 750 and 770.1454cb3dd42cf0b4e4ddebdffd2435a5.jpg

A good attempt to show the comparison, but a few things. 20mm is about.78 inch and the 790 I demoed was larger but not 3/4 inch longer . Also showing the face as much as the picture does you don't get the idea of how thick the rounded top line of the 790 is. It also looks like the 750s. hosel is not even with the 770. They do a nice job with the shape, but it will never be mistaken for a players club. As is the case with any photo comparisons top lines, overall length, offset are very hard to judge without seeing the actual item. I went back to try the demo again with 3 other shafts and still wasn't impressed. The speed foam doesn't cushion soften the impact the way PXGs TPE does) That being said 4 others tried them at the same time I did. 3 ordered complete sets of 790s and the other wanted a 3 iron, so as always demoing in person is the answer.

Not trying to take engineer-grade photos, so just take them for what they obviously are: crappy phone pics. Check them out for yourself before you invest.

You know by chance if the copper and the bronze are two different finishes? I know they obviously are, but some times folks use the two interchangeably when referring to the same "look"

I already pre-ordered two bronze, am hoping I wont miss out on copper as a result!!

Saw this at the TM fitting at Arroyo Trabuco. Sorry for the crappy pic, but I was in a bit of a rush. Apparently it's a gunmetal type finish, so it will rust according to the fitter.

In the middle of making my pre-order for the 790's. Debating atm on the 8-P, 790's or go the 730 route with slightly stronger lofts and slightly weaker lofts in the 790's 4-7.

Doing this at the same time I'm gaming my JPX Tour's and really liking them, I'm an idiot. :D

This is the hard part, right? I think my eventual P700 combo set will likely have slightly stronger lofts in the 7-PW (P730) to match up better in the longer irons, but I need to hit them first to see. I tend to play slightly strong lofts in the short irons to flight the ball down a little because I usually hit them too high

I was fitted by my TM rep last Friday for a set of P790's. Going into it, I too was debating building a combo set of some sort with 750's or maybe 730's because I have been playing Psi Tours which are essentially a built in combo set with the face slots in the longer irons. But after testing the entire set of 790's and seeing the numbers, I ordered a full set of 790's 4-PW with KBS FLT 130's. Previously I was hung up on the fact that the loft's are juiced and that a 7 iron really had 6 iron loft blah blah blah, but they converted me after seeing the data. I came to the realization that if I can hit a club 15 yards further with similar spin, similar launch angle, and similar angle of descent, then the loft is irrelevant. The other advantage to this is that I'm able to cover a wider range of distance with fewer clubs so now I have the flexibility to add an extra wedge or a wood to meet my needs. The irons should be here in the next week. I'll be sure and share my thoughts. Also ordered Milled Grind 52, 56, & 60 in low bounce. They're butter.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the ball speed with these things. It's absolutely unbelievable the ball speed increases that I experienced. Once you hit these on Trackman and see the numbers, it becomes obvious that the technology in these irons is the real deal.

I believe there is a black release and an antique bronze release. I think people are referring to the antique bronze when they say copper.

Thanks for your insight as it's much appreciated. Leaning 70-30 towards the 790's at 4-PW and a 790 uDi if/when it comes available or a 3 iron strengthened 2 degrees. Possibly a GW if I decide to go the whole 790 route.

I know I don't need them as my JPX Tour's suit me just fine, more want than need I'm afraid. Of course many WRX folk here can relate. :D

I have a taylormade my fitting experience scheduled for Thursday evening, I've never had any clubs custom fit so I'm excited. I just recently got back into golf and still playing RAC OS2 irons. I've been on a year long search for new irons and I think I've finally found the winner. Only thing that kinda sucks is that we are close to the end of the season in Pennsylvania.

Im going to Arroyo Trabuco Friday for a fitting and tweak. In my mind my bag is pretty much set but i want to hit the 790 with the Steelfiber. I plan on at least getting a 3 iron. Also everything else is off the rack so i want to make sure i am good with loft and lie. Eventually i can see going graphite in everything as my arthritis seems to be ramping up recently.

Hi All- looking for some help, and I just joined this forum. I apologize in advance is this is not the right place to post this....

On a good day I shoot ~85, and I have played stock rac 5's for 12 years. Recently I decided it was time for a new set, and I wanted to be properly fitted considering since I have had these clubs I have gone from shooting 102 to mid 80's.

I got fitted at Club Champion- I knew I needed a stiffer shaft, and maybe a heavier shaft. The fitter recommended the true temper PXI 6.0 for the p790 irons.

Could anyone shed light on what someone could expect from the stock shafts vs the pxi 6.0? I am always skeptical of being "sold" and I do not know enough about the tech details to ask the right questions in the fitting.

I was fitted using trackman, and also hit the stock shaft in a simulator, but it didnt have all the detail compated to trackman....i could not really tell the difference, both felt good.

The stock shaft will have an overall weight of about 7g less. I couldn't tell the difference in ball flight with my swing type between the DG 105 S300 and the PXi 6.0. If your fitter is putting you in teh PXi it's probably to match up with your swing. I have a pretty late release so I hit everything about the same.

thanks- who is the ideal golfer for these clubs? everything i read says they are a "players" club.

I'm a 7 that struggles with his iron play. Good off the tee and around/on the greens. So far I've had the P790 out on the range for several sessions head to head against the G400, Steelhead XR Pro and Mizuno 900 Forged. Hands down the P790's were easier to hit, more forgiving, higher launching and carried further. Really wasn't a fare fight, they just outperformed the other 3 sets.

More forgiving and longer than G400?

From my experience yes, G400 is a good club but in the 7 thru AW/UW I found the P790's just as easy to hit. The differences started showing up in the 5 & 6 where the G400 is more forgiving but a center struck shot with the P790's is longer and higher launching in the same iron (5/6).

The last few years ordering direct from TM usually leads to getting a club 7 to 10 days before its official release, at least that has been my experience.

is this basically the same thing as getting fitted with an independent shop? my guess is that you'd only be able to choose from what TM offers as opposed to whichever other shafts are on the market?
