Taylormade P790 Irons

Understand what you are saying about loft however the launch angle was higher with the 790 and the decent angle was better. The technology allows for lower lofted irons. Not sure why we get hung up on the loft of the club. I am looking for performance and consistency. If a club had a loft of 35 degrees and performed great I would use that

 

 

Spin is due to loft; height due to COG/loft.

If the Edel is not spinning as much with more loft then it is likely due to the grooves.

 

If the Edel had the same fresh grooves and the same swing speed then you will see more spin in that head vs the 790.

Just don't get mislead by the spin numbers.

 

Huge over simplification here. Spin is not controlled by "fresh" grooves to affect the total numbers by more than 100 rpms at most and in reality probably less. Spin loft will have a much greater impact. His attack angle for one club vs another and shaft load will impact this as well. CU I wouldn't put any stock into this and trust what you saw on the monitor.

I don't know how worn his 7 iron grooves are, but I suspect that since his 7 iron has 2.5* more loft he should be seeing a lot more spin compared to the low spin P790.

Not to continue the thread jack, but in reviews online with the exact same loft on wedges, spin can vary over 1,000RPM, so I am guessing it is more than just loft. That is coming from the same reviewer using the same shafts in the majority of cases, so I feel like CG and other factors would all contribute.

 

As far as these clubs go, I can't wait to try them, and I am reserving a spot for the 2/3 (depending on gapping) to slot in above my 770 3 iron very happily.

 

Have any of the 770 owners who have tried the 790 3 iron got feedback on distance gains?

I hit them in doors on a launch monitor. They sounded clicky....most likely due to the golf ball being a two piece....they did go far.....but don't think I can get down with 5800 rpms with a 7iron..... So maybe a 3 and 4 can kick out my epic pro's....

I don't have much time on the course with mine, but my initial round did not indicate any appreciable loss in stopping power from my Apex Pros.

The old standard of 1000 RPMs per club was based on "old school" lofts. So a 34 degree 7 iron would ideally spin around 7000 RPM with appropriate launch angles. When you go down to 30 degrees and the above poster is correct with it being about 300 per degree you would be at 5800. I just did Titleist Thursday and was hitting the AP3 7 iron with around 5600-5800 in spin and the ball flight was flight and high. There are so many other factors when it comes to looking at numbers.

The high launch / low spin design cheats the wind better than other higher spin clubs. So far I have had no issues playing these in the wind.

I have two rounds in with these and I'm loving them. It took about 9 holes to get the feel for them but since then my dispersion has improved over my epic pro irons. I ordered them with project x 6.0 hard stepped and am getting a nice boring trajectory with them. I have a trackman session scheduled for Thursday so I will post some results from that.

My pro that ordered them was told that by our TM rep. He said they were out of heads at the current moment. They have another shipment coming Monday 9/18 and will be able to build mine then. Not sure if true but have no reason to not believe what the pro told me. I don't think he would lie.

I ordered last week from a retailer, and was told mine wouldn't ship til the week of 9/18! I assume it has to do with the 9/15 release date more so than back order!
