As an aside, it looks like TaylorMade have vastly improved the delivery timelines for this release vs the pre-orders for the 770/750 range which was an absolute balls up.

Yeah, I sure hope that lawsuit doesn't delay the set I just ordered today. I was told they are backordered on the heads already until 9/18. That's just next week but that suit may change things. I ordered Modus 130s so I can't just go grab a set off the rack. Oh well.

where did you hear they were back ordered? I placed an order this morning as well and have not heard anything about them being back ordered.

My pro that ordered them was told that by our TM rep. He said they were out of heads at the current moment. They have another shipment coming Monday 9/18 and will be able to build mine then. Not sure if true but have no reason to not believe what the pro told me. I don't think he would lie.

Ok gotcha. No reason to doubt I was just curious as to where the info came from as i had not heard that before. I know people on here have an inside scoop so just curious. Thanks for the feedback.

I read on TM website they discontinued the 110's, did you have any trouble ordering those? My shaft is the 110 X and if I can get that shaft, these are being ordered.

Do these feel "forged" soft? Had MP-54's, have hit a few other forgings like MP25, CF16. Looking for something with less offset and a little thinner topline than my current irons, and none of the GI clubs are really fitting the bill other than maybe AP3 and JPX900 Forged... Maybe MP-18 MMC.

I went from apex pro irons to the 790's and to me, I believe the 790 feels softer than the apex pro. Again to me, they have that forged soft feel.

How's offset? Also, are you getting decent spin? All the vids I'm seeing online, guys are on the low end spectrum of spin... Ie the 7i spinning high 5000's or low 6000's. I'd maybe need to weaken the lofts.

Offset is less with the 790 as well. I will post my trackmam numbers comparing the 6 iron apex pro with tour issue x100 to the 790 6 iron with Modus tour 130x. I was getting almost identical spin numbers, right around 6000

Trackman data with the 790 6 iron vs apex pro 6 iron. The length of the Apex Pro was actually 1/4" longer than the 790 throughout the set as well.

Looks like you were slightly steeper and faster with the 790, which would have brought the spin numbers closer together. There's a 3.5 degree difference in loft between the two clubs. They're basically different clubs, 790 is a 5 iron based on lofts of yesterday. So you would expect the 790 to be ~1k spin less.

Impressive club head speed, btw.

Dude, you're a beast lol. 103 on the 6i?? Lay off the 'roids my man B)

That's good though you're spin is still up there, although mine would be less because I swing my 6i at a mere 91mph or so.

My fiancé is buying me an iron fitting as an engagement present to me, so I'm trying to narrow what sets I really want to take a look at. Currently about an 19 cap, but my weakness is not my iron or wedge play, it's mainly hitting sick nasty hooks off the tee that find OB or woods. Of course I still don't strike the 5i perfectly every time, but my SG18 stats tell me I'm garbage off the tee and that I still need to avoid that 3w off the deck to make it on the green in 2. I've had MP-54's and my scores did not suddenly skyrocket... so0o...

I wouldn't do anything with the lofts. You'll affect the bounce if you do. I would just make sure that whatever the shortest iron is in your 790 set doesn't cause gapping issues with your wedges. Could even go 5-AW if you have to. Personally, I usually hit a 45 degree pitching wedge around 150 yards, which fits in nicely with my 50 degree wedge that's not a part of the set.

1* weak shouldn't affect much, especially in something like an 8i when the bounce is only 2-3* or so. And spin isn't the whole equation, it's really (for me at least) optimizing the trade off between spin, distance, launch, decent angle and feel when you take shaft into account. I can live with lower spin if my DA from my 7i is high enough where I won't be running my ball to the back of a green on a front flag.

Is there anything else really competing with the 790 in this segment right now (non-blade, semi player forging?) I'm having trouble other than our dear friend Bob Parson's version of this club. I figured maybe MP-18, but looking at them, they are much more bladed looking and shaped.

Apex CF 16 probably.

These irons must be amazing if PXG is suing Taylormade.

Nope, but they are half the price....which when you think about it is the core of PXG. It also ruins their claim ( and arrogant) phrase "nobody makes clubs the way we do, nobody"

PERIOD.

3 rounds on them and it only took me about 9 holes to get adjusted. Really impressed with the performance of these irons so far. Distance, dispersion, and launch is all improved for me. Regarding the 0311 XF's, I have a set and I much prefer the 790's in all facets of performance. Have 7 rounds over the next 4 days so they will get a good work-out.

I think what goes to show people are really enjoying these irons more so than pxg lawsuit is the fact none have made it to bst yet lol

The official release is Sept 15. A few people are lucky enough to have these irons in hand but hardly enough to conclude they are better than a PXG iron by the lack of BST ads for them at the moment. PXG is not TM. TM is not PXG. They do business differently despite having a similarly designed and built iron. PXG irons hold their value pretty well on the BST, I wonder how the P790's will do.

wow!!! i hope below is not the case on why i don't have my irons yet. I am worried already and stress out for waiting, I might have to sue PXG for that. lol

“PXG has already asked for a TRO (temporary restraining order) and a preliminary injunction to stop TaylorMade from making and selling its P-790 clubs while the case is pending,” Van Arnam said. “So there will be an intense few months to decide that motion. Because of the extraordinary relief injunctions offer, that may be an uphill battle. At the same time, we would expect TaylorMade will seek to stay the case and to challenge it with an Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceeding in the patent office, seeking a reexamination and invalidation of the patents.”
