Taylormade P790 Irons

3 rounds on them and it only took me about 9 holes to get adjusted. Really impressed with the performance of these irons so far. Distance, dispersion, and launch is all improved for me. Regarding the 0311 XF's, I have a set and I much prefer the 790's in all facets of performance. Have 7 rounds over the next 4 days so they will get a good work-out.

What's your opinion on their feel? Soft? Click? (Would love to hear your feeling on this "Speed Foam".)

I've hit these outdoors on real grass for over an hour this past Friday. My pro has his set. They are softer than my Ping i200s, Mizuno JPX 900s and Hot Metals. They have a different feel than a super solid forging but they are definitely soft. I personally like them. I would describe it as a forged club with spring effect. There is something in the way the ball jumps off the face that is different whereas a forged club feels like it stays on the face longer. Probably not the best description but kinda what my brain works out. They are much softer than the Titleist AP3s and AP2s for that matter. The AP2s just have that less springy feel.

Mine are on order BTW. I fooled around and waited til this week of launch. I almost ordered them over a week ago but just couldn't pull the trigger. Now I have to wait on the backorder. I did have my pro call the rep again today and he laughed about the lawsuit. He said everybody sues everybody in the golf industry. He said that they would get new heads in by Friday or Monday and start the builds then. Hope they get enough to get where I am in line. Don't want to wait too long.

I totally agree with your description, "forged feel with spring effect".. im pretty picky about my feel, currently playing z765/565 combo, but my all time favorite is '07 x forged! They aren't '07 soft, but soft enough to pass the feel test for me!

These are not buttery soft nor are they "clicky", feel to me is solid and powerful without the harshness of a head that has distance and forgiveness built into it. I'm a fan of the feel of these irons because they differentiate between a well struck shot and a not so good one. This is such a subjective thing, as an offer of 0311XF's I find the 790's "softer" but with more power if that makes a damn bit of sense!

For those that ordered late and are seeing them start to ship, did you order with standard specs? Or better, standard length shafts?

I ordered mine +.25 longer, 1 up with Modus 120 hard stepped 1 time.

Maybe club head weight starts changing +1/2" over standard? That's the reason I was givin for my delay (Ordered the 1st) 3i +1* strong, 1/2" long. They said they were waiting on a lighter head? Don't know if that was the old "run around" or true.

I'm just a lil peanut butter n jelly of ya'lls orders being shipped :cheesy: . I did get in the M2 LIFT though! Thing is sweet!

FYI...I ordered my set Sep1 and was just told by my pro they would not arrive to my club until 9/22. Maybe it is the lighter head thing I see referenced.

My specs were +3/4" 3up, Recoil F4 for what it's worth.

Question for you guys that have gotten your irons: Was your set standard? Any custom options?

Mine are half inch longer than standard and 2 degrees flat, stepped once as well.

Mine are +1" with Recoil 110's and 1* upright. Ordered the day that the preorder went up on the TM site, and got them last Thursday.

I ordered direct off the TM website, not through a pro or club rep.

(I also ordered off the TM site) Starting to sound like the head weight was a run around :angry22:

I don't want to start a new thread (yet...) but are there planned replacements for JPX 900F and CF16? I'm looking what I should be comparing head to head vs these 790's, but I'm thinking maybe I should hold off until replacements for those 2 come out?

Yes, but who knows when. Another comparable iron I thought of was the Titleist T-MB. Very expensive though and I don't believe they are forged. Also, Srixon Z565 would be similar to JPX 900F and CF 16. Here's a head to head for all three of those:

I ordered mine online on Monday 3-PW with Modus 120X SSX1 and 1 degree flat and just got off the phone with TM customer service and they will be delivered on the 21st. They said the heads are not out of stock or back ordered. The demand is high so they are going through what he called their product launch plan. Whatever that means. LOL

Actually I had that video pulled up before I even read this post ;)

I really would like to try and find out when new CF's and JPX's will be out.... What's the sense of getting fit when fresh competition would be out shortly after?

Also, I worry the high bounce on the Srixons will be a deal breaker for me. I use <10* bounce for my GW... I'm a pretty shallow striker so 14* on my 8i is an absolute no go most likely.

Thanks for this thread, just finished all 20 pages....

Been itching for a new set of irons, since my CF16 are SOOOO old:)

Only thing that interested me so far this year have been the Titleist AP3, and the TM P-790.

Stopped by my local shop yesterday as Titleist was having a demo say with their new 718 products, and spent quite a bit of time hitting all the irons.

AP2- still the same, great look, not even forgiveness nor distance to replace my CF16.

AP1- much prefer the CF16 looks.

AP3- felt a little harsh, good launch and distance, chrome finish(which I don't care for).

Bottom line, the CF16's won't be getting replaced by anything Titleist. Need to try the P-790's, I have high hopes for them.

How did the AP1's feel compared to the CF16's? I would have thought they weren't comparable at all.

I would agree with that. My CF16 felt MUCH better, not sure how much of that was the shaft though, as I have Modus 120's, and the AP1 had AMT S300's.

After having a wee session on the practice tee yesterday and liking what I saw and felt with my 790's, they really performed well on the course today.

Most impressed with the variety of shots I can go with them. Knock downs, higher shots and even shaping them was as good or better than my Mizzy Tour 900's. Won't even go on about being a club longer or a bit more as that's down to loft/launch etc., but a darn good feel with lovely playability.

Definite gamers and will be in the bag for the rest of this and next season.

Yeah, they look like PXG's, Bob, but you should probably check out the patents TM acquired from Adams involving their XTD forged line before you claim to be the inventor of hollow/floating face, dampening material injected irons.

I ordered on the 9th through TM and am still "Being processed". Looks like people that ordered last week are getting them this week so I assume next week will be the time for us lazy people that "preordered" late. :)
