Scrambles Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Played Saturday at Cole Park, and we shot 9 under, definitely not WRX standards, but had a blast! I was putting well and helped eagle the last hole, a par 4. I holed out a PW! Plan on doing another this and next month as well.

I love scrambles. Anymore I find myself enjoying team events much more than competing as an individual. Three of my buddies and I actually just qualified for the GAM (Golf Association of Michigan) Scramble State Finals. It is a step aside format and the team must consist of no more then two players under 10.0 and must have at least a 36.0 team index. So it makes it very fair so the teams aren't loaded with pros and flat bellies.

My friends and I also compete in the Ironman Scramble at Tullymore and St Ives every spring and fall. We've won it two out of the four times it has been contested so far.

Who doesn't enjoy a good scramble?

We do 2-3 every year at our club and they are fun. We typically do 3 man teams of one A, one AA and a B.

There tends to be some pretty low scores

Play in a 2 man scramble league real fun and also will play in other 4 man scramble events sprinkled in.

As long a people remember most of the scrambles are for a good cause and not legit competition then they are fun just fun.

I am at the point where I would rather donate the money than play in a scramble. I used to love them when I would only play 3-5 times a year. I do not like the 5 plus hours of being on the golf course then another hour or two of waiting until we are served food and prizes. I love golf.. don't get me wrong but I do not love it enough to spend an entire day doing it anymore. I would rather stop after work and play 18 in 2.5 to 3 hours or hit the range/short game area and work on something for 2 hours. Most of the time they are for a good cause and when I do play I try and remember that and have fun.

Me and some friends play a two man scramble about once a month on an executive par 3. Usually 4 or 5 teams with half of us being good golfers and the other half not as good but still know how to play. It's a great time for us all to get together seeing as we all have busy lives. Takes us no more than 5 hours and it's time well spent with good friends.

I've enjoyed some scrambles, and hated others. The best ones have been the ones where the teams that aren't going to post a competitive score already know it, and they just go out and have some fun and pick up when they know they're not going to make a par. It's also nice when they have a time limit put on them.

I didn't write a post about this, since it seems cliche for WRX, but another WRX'er (Rebby) and I played in a 4-man scramble a few weeks ago and won at -19. We just laughed at the end of the round and both instantly thought about how cliche it really was, in the context of : "What happens when more than one WRX member plays on a scramble team?" lol. We are playing in another one in a few days together.

I play in charity scrambles here in SoCal, mainly because I have a wealthy friend who likes to make the donation.

Highlights are the swag and food....and getting to play different private courses in the area.

Personally, I think that for a scramble to be fun all the players have to have similar games...one of the guys in our group could be single digit (played baseball in college), but doesn't play more than 6 times a year...however, when playing well, he hits his drives 380-300 yards...the rest of us don't even both to tee off!

I have to agree with the idea of donating money, especially since most of the scrambles I have played in have been charitable fund raisers. I have a low tolerance for the 5-6 hour rounds and the people that happen to be playing golf while getting drunk. A nice donation and the charity gets to keep all of it.

2 person scrambles are great. Not a fan of the slow drunken 4 person debacles. I only do them for work and sometimes those aren't worth the time investment.

Hehe, our last work drunken 4 person debacle we ended up shooting -16.

It was ridiculous. None of us were fantastic golfers. I was the best at a 23-odd handicap, but every hole one of us would make a great shot, whether it was a drive or an approach.

Plus we didn't miss a putt all day. If we were on in regulation (or for eagle) we made the putt. Didn't matter if it was a 3 footer or a 50 footer.

Couldn't believe how well we shot, especially considering each tee shot after the 2nd (which we eagled) started with a pre-shot shot.

I go into scrambles with what I call "The 10 Rules of a Scramble"......

1. You probably won't win. So what you shoot doesn't matter.

2. You did it for a good cause. NEVER forget that. It's a win-win. Good cause + game you love.

3. There are often awesome prizes involved and you might win one.

4. Even the CTPs and long drives may end up being cheated. If you manage to win one - awesome. If not, let it go.

5. It's a great opportunity to get together with golfing buddies (for a good cause) and spend a few hours chatting it up and having fun.

6. It's going to be a long day. Pace of play means nothing in a scramble.

7. Most better scrambles have great food and even all beverages included.

8. Many scrambles I have played in were at really nice courses which is another plus.

9. Church scrambles are usually honest ones - far more likely for a good score to hold up.

10. Take distance balls with you to really enhance the fun as you blast away at rocks you would otherwise never play.

The scary part of that round is that we should have been -23. Even at -19, we made a few stupid mistakes.

Our club has a few scrambles every year where we put together our own teams and it turns into a good gambling opportunity between teams. There's never any cheating, mulligans, string, etc. and they are typically played in 3.5 hours so given it's all members. There are teams who sign up for the fun of it and know that they aren't going to win but still tend to enjoy themselves.

There's also a big cup hard course scramble that is played at Lawsonia Links every year which is played as 8somes so you can't cheat, and the course is set up to the point of borderline impossible with pins sticking out of the sides of hills or put in spots where if the ball doesn't go in you may be back at your feet. It's always an awesome event, competitive as can be, and is more fun than should be legal on the golf course just because of the challenge.

5 hours on an executive par 3 course with 2 man teams?????? That seems absurdly long.

If it's just me and a buddy, and he says "hey, want to try playing a two-man scramble today?" then that is pretty cool/fun every once in awhile.

If it's the 8th annual Joey Baggadonuts Memorial Outing at a public course I could play any other time, 5+ hour scramble round with a bunch of drunks, no thanks, you couldn't pay me to play in it.

If it's a charity scramble on a private course I've always wanted to play, I'll play in it if I know the other people in the foursome and know I can convince them to ditch the scramble format and everyone plays their own ball.

  • 2 weeks later...

Maybe it's just me, but any time spent on the golf course is a good time. I only play scrambles with my friends and family, so spending 4-6 hours on the course with them is no big deal. We always have a great time. Most of us aren't playing to earn a living, so If you're not playing golf with people you have fun with I think you're doing it wrong.
