Scrambles Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Maybe it's just me, but any time spent on the golf course is a good time. I only play scrambles with my friends and family, so spending 4-6 hours on the course with them is no big deal. We always have a great time. Most of us aren't playing to earn a living, so If you're not playing golf with people you have fun with I think you're doing it wrong.

I'm the same, very very rarely do I not enjoy myself on the course. Some guys I play with get very angry over pace of play, or cheaters, or bad luck, or just playing poorly, whether it's a scramble or a league or just a casual round. There's no way I'd be able to stick with it if I felt like that so often.

I'm playing a scramble Saturday morning that we have a legitimate chance of winning, plus I stand a decent chance at winning a long drive or closest to the pin. But if I wind up empty handed it will still have been a fun morning raising money for a good cause.

Corporate golf day scramble tomorrow. The same one we shot -16 at last year.

Suspect this year won't be anywhere near as good as my team consists of two ladies who golf once a year (at this event) and a guy who hasn't swung a club all year.

Ah well, whatever, it's a day out of the office and the forecast is great, so I'm just looking forward to a few beers and a relaxing day on the course.

Scrambles are the best. If your putters are on fire, great. If not, crack a cold one with the boys and enjoy a good reason to not be in the office.

Play in one with a bunch of retirees weekly. Usually fun but messes up my driver for a day or so.

Putter too. My first round after my last scramble was a 3 putt nightmare. Being aggressive with every putt is not necessarily the right play in August when you have to worry about cleaning up the next put by yourself.

I played in one with my brother a couple months ago that was fun. It was a fundraiser for his girlfriend's brother who was in a bad boat accident. It was the two of us and we got paired with another random twosome that signed up. The other two guys were a blast and we ended up winning the thing with a 59. They were great company and could also play which was awesome!

If it's just me and a buddy, and he says "hey, want to try playing a two-man scramble today?" then that is pretty cool/fun every once in awhile.

If it's the 8th annual Joey Baggadonuts Memorial Outing at a public course I could play any other time, 5+ hour scramble round with a bunch of drunks, no thanks, you couldn't pay me to play in it.

If it's a charity scramble on a private course I've always wanted to play, I'll play in it if I know the other people in the foursome and know I can convince them to ditch the scramble format and everyone plays their own ball.

Or just always have the best shot! Haha

I played in a scramble today for work, and got paired with three people I didn't know. Great bunch of guys, who agreed to keep it totally 100% legit. No re-do's, no mulligans, no gimmes etc.. We played to -8 and manged to finish third, and in the money.

I truly believe this was an on the level event. Such a nice change.

I've seen to many charity events with no maximum score per hole. Nothing like waiting for 4 people who don't play golf take 9 shots each to card a nine on a par 4.

Having people on your team that I would classify as golfers makes for a fun day for all. I classify a golfer as someone who plays in a league or somewhat regularly on weekends. They don't have to be good, but can at least hit the ball (no whiffs)

My next scramble has two coworkers so far with maybe one more to be added. I would consider myself a B player 11.1 index and the other two don't have handicaps. One has been to the driving range once this year and the other has played two 9 hole rounds with me, and maybe a couple other 9 hole rounds this year. Anything in Red figures would be a nice outcome.

I will only play in scrambles if:

A) I have played golf with everyone in the group

B) I am not "the ringer"

C) I can play in it for free

Every time I've been invited by a buddy to be "the ringer" and I don't know the other 2 guys...I've left the course frustrated.

If I have a slightly off day (as is common in scrambles since you're not able to get into your zone), the "I thought you said this guy would win it for us" comments get annoying, or when everyone misses the fairway/green/putt and you hear your partner wearing a flat billed hat, his only golf polo and cargo shorts say "Well, it's all on you now" gets old after the 3rd hole. Ugh, and there's nothing worse than the guy who gets his feelings hurt when you don't take his shot. Your angle/lie sucks, and the yardage is awkward get over it.

All this is totally acceptable if I get to play for free. Because getting to play (even torturous) golf for free on a Saturday is better than not playing for free.

I've gotten to the point in the past 2-3 years where I just about hate scrambles. The only one I will do anymore is my company scramble tournament, but only because it's a free day off of work.

I soured on them for a bunch of reasons I think. I was in a league for many years that started doing them too often. When I started the league, the first 6-7 years were 100% team match play or best ball, and it was great. Then someone said "hey we should play a couple scrambles as part of the competition". This was fine at first when it was just a couple times a season, but eventually we started playing scrambles close to 50% of the time. Myself and a couple other guys complained saying "I didn't pay $450 to play scrambles every other week, I want to play my own ball". But some of the other guys shot back with "golf is a grind, we just wanna play fun scrambles". I ended up quitting the league last year after being in it for 12 years.

I guess the other reasons are what many others echoed in this thread: cheaters, long rounds, drunkards. I always felt like my swing got out of whack after a scramble, and it always seemed to take a couple rounds to get things back in order. I'm not even sure why other than I think you swing much more carefree during a scramble. Also, when I go out to play golf I like to play against the course, test myself and post a score.

I play a few a year. We just go out and see how far we can hit it. It's funny when we bring a guy from the World Long Drive Series that can carry it 380 no problem, hits a 3-wood 350 off the deck, half drunk........Where we play you need -20 to win, against teams that can't shoot anywhere near -20 legally......lol

Any scrambles I play are work related and I'll rarely do one that is on the weekend. My company sponsors a lot of events and usually we have a spot or a foursome in at least a dozen events per year plus the ones I get invited to by clients. On my own time doubt I'd ever play in one. I really don't enjoy them. I just want to play my own ball. The last one I did after we wrapped up we played the 3 holes back to the clubhouse as strait up golf and I enjoyed those 3 holes better than the whole rest of the day.

Played one on Friday.

We parred the first 5 holes, then I went on a tear and went birdie, birdie, par, eagle, birdie, birdie all on my own for 6 under in 6 holes but then dried up. The other guys don't golf much. The group I was playing with didn't even get out of the carts to putt. They just wanted to drink.

We got one more birdie for an earth shattering -7. I wasn't even going to hand in the card thinking -13 to -14 would win but they wanted me to hand it in. We did end up winning. I was shocked. I guess people were being honest that day.
